Skip Schumaker led-off the game for the Los Angeles Dodgers and lined Colorado Rockies’ right-hander Tyler Chatwood’s (5-3, 2.56) first pitch to the right of center-fielder Dexter Fowler.  The hit eluded a diving Fowler and rolled for a double.  Adrian Gonzalez pulled a ground-ball to the right-side to move Schumaker to 3rd-base, and he scored when Hanley Ramirez grounded to short.  The run held-up as the Dodgers’ Zach Greinke (8-2, 3.49) pitched a complete game shut-out and the Dodgers defeated Colorado 1-0 Saturday night at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

There were no further highlights.

Veteran Todd Helton was the hitting star for the Rockies, singling with one out in the 5th, and working Greinke for a lead-off walk in the 8th.  Josh Rutledge pinch-ran and stole 2nd, but was stranded when Greinke got Nolan Arenado to ground to 3rd, struck-out Yorvit Torrealba, and Jonny Herrera grounded to Gonzalez.  The right-hander recorded 14 ground-ball outs and struck-out 9 Colorado hitters.

Chatwood matched Greinke’s performance with a near flawless one of his own.  In addition to the double by Schumaker, he gave-up singles to Ramirez in the 4th and Greinke in the 5th.  AJ Ellis doubled with one out in the 7th.  Chatwood walked 2 and struck-out 4.

The NL West Division rivals wrap up the first half of the season with a 2:10 pm MDT contest at Chavez Ravine Sunday afternoon.  Rockies’ righty Jhoulys Chacin will face freshly acquired Ricky Nolasco of the Dodgers.

You crack me up, Jeem. Nice to be able to smile after this past week of rocky baseball. And a tip of my cap to Mr. Chatwood, again. Thanks.

Going back to the pregame remarks, WW took out a piece, Tulo, and lo + behold, zeroes.

Tulo’s back to play in the ASG. Probably came back much sooner than he would (or maybe should) otherwise. Having him in would have beefed up the hitting. Jonny’s probably better able to field the position for the next week or so. Hopefully Tulo gets his AS at-bat and comes out next Tues.

I sure hope that during the off-season Tulo spends some time working with Helton learning the 1B position, so that when he does need a day off from the rigors of playing SS he can move over to 1B. It’s what the Giants do with Posey. Their bats bats are too valuable to keep out of lineup. It’s what smart organizations do with their star players. Well, never mind, it is the Rox we are talking about.

Two hits suck, but it’s two more than the Padres got.

I read somewhere that someone should look for a first base man instead of pitcher. It makes perfect match. White Sox are trying to blow up roster and dump salaries. Adam Dunn is under contact thru 2014 at $14M-$15M per year. If you want to win now, get him. they are not asking for much in return. Give them our left handed outfielders.

RMH, I’m one of those people who’s been suggesting that the easiest/cheapest way to improve is to get a decent first baseman, or a decent corner outfielder who could move Cuddy full-time to 1B. Adam Dunn? No thanks on that one. But the point is a good one in general: have some kind of plan. So far the “plan” is the same as always. Hold onto your expensive stars (Tulo/Cargo), your expensive free agent signee (Cuddy), and hope for everything… Read more »

The loss to Greinke doesn’t stink as much as losing to Capuano or the journeyman we lost to earlier on the road trip. He’s a stud pitchers. One question that I have about having Geivett in the clubhouse, is how much influence he has in making out the lineup. Or maybe the question should be how much influence Walt has. Nothing has been made clear. For instance Weiss said that the plan was to give Tulo a day off during… Read more »
