161: Scrimmage

Firmly ensconced in the cellar yet again, the Colorado Rockies are running-out AAA lineups, swapping guys in and out like the Beer League, and heading for vacation.  Juan Nicasio (8-9, 5.32), as bad as you can be in his last two starts, gets the call against Zach Greinke (15-3, 2.67) of the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 7:10 MDT at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Nicasio has failed to get out of the 3rd inning in either of his last two “outings.”  He’s seen his ERA balloon by almost a run (0.84) in 2 short weeks.  On Sunday Arizona strafed him for 7 runs on 7 hits in
2-1/3.  Ah, but remember September 11:  he held the Giants to one over 5.  Greinke, meanwhile toils for the division champ.  The Dodgers are determined to finish strong, probably wishing their opponent was showing a little more pulse, although their fans got to enjoy a spirited offensive display in last night’s punitive shut-out.  Greinke held the Padres scoreless on 2 hits for 5 innings Sunday in San Diego.

The Skysox are playing front-men and outfielders in the Colorado lineup tonight.  Charlie Blackmon leads-off in right, Charlie Culberson’s 2nd in left, and Corey Dickerson will hit 3rd in center.  Jordan Pacheco catches and Jonny Herrera’s at 2nd.  Don Mattingly’s got Skip Schumaker leading-off in right-field with the incomparable Yasiel Puig taking a night-off.  Scott Van Slyke hits 8th in left as Carl Crawford joins the ailing Andre Ethier and Puig on the bench.

LA weather’s got clear skies and temperatures in the upper 70°s when game time rolls around.  The wind will blow-out toward center at 8 MPH and humidity is low at 21%.  It’s Drew, Jeff, Jenny and the Cowboy on TV and Jerry and Jack on radio, yakking it up to the finish.  Todd Helton. Todd Helton. Todd Helton.

Nicasio has just enough good games that you think he’ll make it. Needs to go longer than 5 1/3 though. But good way for him to end the season. I know lot of Rockies fans were hoping the Rocks would go after Hunter Pence. Looks like he’s just re-signed with the Giants. And there has been talk of going after Brian McCann who will be a free agent. I hear the Yankees want him. If A-Rod is NOT suspended the… Read more »

Bill, you can’t blame 2 straight losing seasons on Cuddy…the guy has done everything asked of him, and more so this season with how he is hitting out of his skull…one doesn’t match the other (by the way, aren’t you the Cuddy backer? What happened)?

I guess my attempt at sarcasm didn’t quite work. I do like Cuddyer but Montfort, I guess it’s Dick, was quoted as saying “we’re not trading Cuddyer” and “we’re picking up DLR’s option”. Never quoted as saying, “we’re going out and getting” a power hitting right-handed bat or even a power-hitting left-handed bat”. It’s not enough to say we’re keeping Cuddyer as if that is all you need to do. I’m not blaming him. I like him. I like lots… Read more »

It was a great game, especially after yesterday, good pitching, good defense and a will to win now, when for all in all it is long over. Nicasio had velocity and wasn’t missing his spots until late in the game, Ottavino evidently likes the late single innings and Bettis has the velocity for a late inning guy. Brothers was able to work around and set the Dodgers down. I think that Blackmon, Dickerson and Culberson bring a drive to win… Read more »

What’s wrong with Cuddyer, he runs the bases hard every time, does a good job at first and in the field and will win the Batting Title. I don’t think that is a bad player. We can get better with a little spending for some players who actually contribute to the team. Instead of retreads who don’t.

I’d take a team of Cuddyers any day.Plays hard, plays the game right, and maximizes his talent.Earned his “big money”this season.
