Altuve Potential Target?

I was just thinking about how the Rockies can help themselves this season.  Jose Altuve is a very young All Star second baseman and would be under team control for a few more years.  I would imagine that the Astros are seeking prospects in return if they want to move him.  I’m thinking we can give up two or three prospects and D.J. LeMahieu.  I’m thinking of Trevor Story, Tyler Anderson, Kyle Parker, Dan Winkler, Christian Bergman, Tyler Matzek, Josh Rutledge, Corey Dickerson from the prospect group (or having cup of coffee now) in which the Astros can choose 2 or 3 of them.

I would be jumping for joy if we get Altuve because he leads the AL in stolen bases while batting over .300.  We can put him in either leadoff or second spot.  What you guys think?

I like Altuve……but we have an offensive juggernaut already, and LeMahieu is better defensively (LeMahieu is a consensus “plus” defender……I’ve seen Altuve defensive ratings vary, but mostly average).

Pitching will be our need. I think RP (unless Chatwood and Anderson are really, really slow to return).

It does help that we have all these guys (re)establishing their prospect status. Certainly gives us more trade commodities.

I like DJ. How many times have we seen him stretch his 6’4″ body to make a catch? Altuve is really short. There are so many plays that DJ just barely made that Altuve would not have made. And we have Rutledge in the wings, and then we have Story in the wings. I don’t think that we need to trade a number of prospects for a 2B. I agree with SDCarp that we need to save our prospects either… Read more »

INTERESTING!!!!!! Now we’re talking. Straight from Rotoworld: Rockies manager Walt Weiss on Thursday wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Adam Ottavino eventually seeing time in the closer role “down the road.” “I wouldn’t rule it out,” Weiss said. “There’s enough stuff — he’s been dominant this year. He’s one of those wipeout right-handed relievers. So he’s a great matchup guy. But he certainly has the stuff to, down the road, pitch in that role.” The common thought has been that… Read more »

BTW – I grew up in the south. Was force-fed the Braves since the earliest days I can remember. I hate them with a passion. Let’s kick some a** tonight boyz!

I hate them because of their dumb fan chant and their dumb fans who never fill the stadium for their consistently good-to-great team, even in the playoffs. True, it’s a miserable summer climate, but IN THE FALL, people? I know I’m completely illogical to hate a team because of their fans. Two different animals, but we seem to connect them.

The chant was blatantly stolen from Florida State. They just recently added to my hate when they decided to add to the ridiculous Atlanta urban sprawl by building the new stadium well north of downtown in Cobb County. No MARTA links. Really weird decision.

I don’t know why we can’t be content with a plus fielding, occassionally offensively productive second baseman. There are worse things in baseball than having your 8th hitter be either Clint Barmes or DJ LeMahieu (the 2009 post season not withstanding). Here’s my case for DJ being a long term Rockie. 1 He’s only 25. 2 He’s not gonna get worse in the field any time soon. 3 He should get only better with age at hitting and I suspect… Read more »

There’s been a lot of talk on a couple of website/blogs that I routinely visit noticing the “need” at 2nd among a number of teams that figure to be in contention……and the value to those teams of Rickie Weeks and Gordan Beckham. Yankees – weak at 2nd. St. Louis – weak at 2nd. Atlanta – weak at 2nd – may have an internal solution. Oakland – weak at 2nd. ETC. Texas – weak at 2nd. Weeks comes with a ton… Read more »

At first thought it sounds good but we have a guy who has power, speed and average defense already…Rutledge. I cannot see trading for Altuve until you decide that Rut can or cannot play 2nd. Altuve appears to be a better defender but have not watched enough of him to say if he is better than Rutledge and to be honest, how many outs have we gotten from that 6’4 frame that at 5’5 isn’t going to happen (I am… Read more »

I would be against the trade because DJ is doing a great job, because we would lose two or three depth players for a good player when we already have a good player, and because it would unnecessarily break up a unified team. One thing the Rockies have lacked in recent years is depth. Now they have it. Keep it. Makes great competition.

I think we have moved on to not trading any infielders after last night:-(

No way. Why give up all that for a player who may or may not be able to play in a city that cares about baseball. Altuve has no pressure on him. Don’t like the trade. I’m guessing that we’ll find out in the next month if Rutledge is better than he was last year. Don’t think he plays 3rd but he was groomed to play 2nd last year and blew his chance. Hopefully he will do his job this… Read more »
