Tyson Ross stifled the Colorado Rockies on 3 hits over 7 innings and Jedd Gyorko pushed Matt Belisle’s (5-6, 4.50) first pitch over the head of Michael Cuddyer and into the right-field stands in the 8th inning as the San Diego Padres defeated Colorado 2-1 Saturday night at Petco Park in San Diego.
Tyler Chatwood, taking his turn despite a line shot off his pitching hand a week ago, surrendered a 1st inning run to the Padres when he again deflected a drive back through the box, this one by Alexi Amarista with 2 outs and the bases loaded. The ground-ball skittered over to DJ LeMahieu, who was unable to get an out. Chatwood threw shut-out ball from there out, giving up only 3 additional hits and 2 walks over 6 innings, for naught.
Manuel Corpas handled the 7th for the Rockies, then the offense scratched-out an 8th inning run against Luke Gregerson (6-7, 2.98) to tie things at 1-1. Charlie Blackmon singled and was forced at 2nd by pinch-hitter Ryan Wheeler. Charlie Culberson pinch-ran for the pinch-hitter, stole 2nd with 2 out, and came around on a single by LeMahieu. Despite being beaten by Will Venable’s throw to the plate, Culberson scored by ripping Nick-Hundley’s glove right off of his arm on the slide into home. LeMahieu, alas, was stranded at 3rd. Next was Gyorko v Belisle.
Colorado will look to avoid a sweep this afternoon at 2:10. Chad Bettis (0-3, 5.45) will pitch for the Rockies against San Diego’s Ian Kennedy (6-9, 4.96).
