The Colorado Rockies have promoted 3rd-baseman Nolan Arenado from AAA Colorado Springs, and he’ll be starting there today with Colorado looking to even a 4-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who trail them by a game in the NL West standings. The Rockies are sending right-hander Jon Garland (2-1, 4.68) to the hill to face Arizona’s Patrick Corbin (2-0, 1.71), the second lefty Colorado will face in succession. First pitch is slated for 2:10 pm MDT at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Garland is coming-off a rocky start vs Atlanta, surrendering 6 runs on 10 hits in 6 innings and taking the loss in the night-cap of the Tuesday double-header. The 23 year-old Corbin, in his 2nd MLB season, is having a fine start to 2013, allowing just 5 earned runs in 26-1/3 innings. He went 7-1/3 Tuesday in San Francisco, allowing 2 runs in the Diamondbacks’ 11 inning win over the Giants.
Jason Kubel is back early from the Disabled List and will hit 3rd in Arizona manager Kirk Gibson’s Sunday lineup. Gerardo Parra, riding a 12-game hitting streak, leads-off. Eric Chavez is in at 3rd and Cliff Pennington returns for DiDi Gregorius at short. Eric Young Jr will be in left-field for slumping Carlos Gonzalez with Troy Tulowitzki moving-up to 3rd and Wilin Rosario slotting-in at clean-up. Arenado will hit 7th, Josh Rutledge 8th.
A high temperature of 99° is predicted for the Phoenix area this afternoon, so expect Chase Field to assume the sterile “airplane hanger” look TJinPhoenix described for us yesterday. It’s the usual broadcast outlets, ROOT Sports for TV and KOA 850 am radio.
