Arizona Sunset

With the better part of the RWO roster scrambling for the lifeboats, even as Colorado Rockies’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki returns from visiting an anti-aging clinic outside of Boca Raton, Florida, the Friday night scribe Rocky Mountain High is steadfastly denying persistent rumors he plans to assassinate center-fielder Tyler Colvin. “It is not a bad idea,” said RMH, “but I am presently without a means to get to Phoenix. Although there is a guy named ‘Pork Chop’ operating out of Santa Monica, who is currently short on cash and may be able to help us out in Los Angeles.”

With due-deference and proper attribution to Denver Nuggets Hall of Famer and former coach Dan Issel, the Rockies will send “El Busto,” Drew Pomeranz (0-1, 8.31) to the mound tonight as they face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle game of a weekend series at Chase Field.  The Diamondbacks will run-out left-hander Wade Miley (4-7, 4.29) for the 8:10 pm MDT start in the desert.  Miley, who has come-back to the league after a promising rookie year in 2012, went 5-2/3 against the Mets on Monday night.  He wasn’t scored-on, but pitched in-trouble all night and left after 110 pitches, 6 hits, 4 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Pomeranz, who still can’t figure-out what was wrong with how he pitched in 2012, was impressed with Miley’s economical performance.  Also a lefty, Pomeranz made his 2013 Major League debut on Sunday, turning-in 4-1/3 scintillating frames, giving-up 4 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks with 5 strike-outs.  He threw 92 pitches.

Colorado, which has the curious misfortune of facing unknown pitchers who throw career-games every time they open a series on the road, will change-up the lineup against Miley.  Josh Rutledge will move-over to 2nd-base and lead-off for DJ LeMahieu.  Jonny Herrera will handle short at the request of RWO’s Jaredean and bat 2nd.  Carlos Gonzalez and his sore back will be in left-field, and Colvin will be unable to watch his, hitting 8th in center.  Kirk Gibson and his Staff of Champions will go with the same group as Friday.

It’ll be 105° in Phoenix at game time, so chances are the Chase Field roof will be closed.  Wind will blow down at 15 cfm.  ROoT Sports is coming off a very professional Fan Friday, lean and mean with fewer personalities to feature.  Drew Goodman and Jeff Huson will have the call.  Jerry Schemmel and Jack Corrigan will be over on KOA 850 am as always.

Great article. Helped me blow off a helluva lotta steam.

Still disappointed Rut and colvin are still in lineup rather than Dickerson and DJLM. #continuedineptness

Pomeranz is so awful. The ROX need to unload him while he has ‘potential’ still.

Poll for everyone in regards to Drew Pomeranz:
A) The coaching staff gathered by BIB DoD is in the process of destroying a great talent
B) BIB DoD scouts can not evaluate talent and completely missed on his talent level
C) All of the above

I don’t think Pomeranz’s problem is the arm. It’s all above the shoulders. Maybe I’m the blind one, but I think he’s got talent. They just need someone to get his head straight. Pitchers in general, left-handers in particular, generally take longer to mature. I think I’ve mentioned this before but I believe Warren Spahn won all or almost all of his games (and he won 350 plus) after he was 25. And that was before steroids. I’m not sure… Read more »

“C” Meanwhile the Dodgers just got Nolasco for 3 nonprospects. Key: they take on 5 million of his remaing contract. #itsover?

Meanwhile Nicasio has been fantastic at AAA. Is he better than Pomeranz? Maybe. But it mostly shows its a long way from Co Springs to Coors Field.

Hey Jare, here’s my first postgame: the free fall is well underway. All the feel-good from the early season is gone. Can’t even feel good about our all-stars. The whole team looks lost except Cargo tonight. Did anybody see the face on Dante around mid-game? And could Pomeranz be any more the opposite of what they thought and what we need? Holy friggin’ smokes.

The Cowboy had some very pointed comments post-game: (1) Dodgers radio guy Candiotti pointed out that Pomeranz was tipping his curveball; (2) Pomeranz has turned into a nibbler instead of the aggressive power pitcher he was in the Cleveland system; (3) not surprisingly, the Padres are collapsing – since the Rox play them next “somebody has to win.” I like that third comment, although left unspoken was “The Rockies are collapsing and that’s not really surprising either. On Pom: we… Read more »

Daughter’s boyfriend (and D-back fan but good guy) and I were going to go tonight, we give each other a good amount of fun ribbing when we play each other. Thank God he came down with a cold and we didn’t go (“Wid all due respect” as they said on the Sopranos). Got to catch up on a great BBC mystery show my wife and I were watching-much more suspense there. The swoon has started…I guess we’re sellers…throw in the… Read more »

I’m with Bill. Pomeranz’s problem is mental. I think he can’t handle the pressure in the Bigs.

Right now, he’s a liability, and in a downward spiral psychologically, as his lack of performance on the field fuels his innate insecurity.

He needs a psychologist more than a pitching coach.

DrewPo’s body language is awful. It appears as though he’s pitching scared. In my opinion the guy’s soft, not much mental toughness.
