They obtained Samardzija and Hammel from the Cubs. Time to dangle De La Rosa and Belisle as baits to a contender.

It really doesn’t matter. As long as DoD is in charge Rockies won’t be a consistent contender. Billy Beane, who works with no attendance, a lousy stadium and budget less than the Rockies, always is a contender. Even if DoD trades DLR and Matt he’ll end up getting no value for them. Why? Because he’s proven after all these years that he’s not qualified for the job. Pisses me off. But I watched the Capital 4th on PBS and it… Read more »
This is exactly my problem with trying to play hot stove when our GM has about a one in five success rate in trades and pretty much zero understanding of pitching. This team is doomed under his stewardship.

It looks like we could have offered Gray, next years 1st rounder[looking like top 3]and DLR and gotten a shot at these two.Gray,DLR,and Cargo could have been a winning hand and shown Tulo that we want to win now.I’m truly shocked and awed by this amazing deal. The A’s already own MLB best record this seems unfair!

I’ve said many, many times…..watch every move the A’s make. This is a somewhat curious move by the Cubs (not the dealing of the pitchers, but the return). Addison Russell is a GREAT prospect. But the Cubs top prospect Javier Baez is a SS. They also have the Alcantera kid who’s a SS/2B type (he’s also an elite prospect) and is close to being ready for the show. Not to mention…….everyday SS Starlin Castro is still extremely young and promising.… Read more »
Billy Beane is aggressive and smart, and the A’s contend a lot, but when did they last win it all? Just sayin. And don’t think I wouldn’t take an aggressive and smart GM just to give us some hope and pleasure.

Cubs outflank the Rockies in the race for # 1 pick in the 2015 amateur draft. We can’t do anything right!
Explain Ag.Are you saying Cubs are throwing in the towel and trying to out lose the ROX? If so we should trade Cargo for Arrieta and that bull pen kid,Ramerize,or Martinez whatever his name is.
Ag is right (for the rest of this year) Cubs pitching will be horrid, maybe even worse than us.
But…..the Cubbie Bears are building an offensive juggernaut for 2K15 and beyond.

For those interested – FanGraphs has a fascinating, in depth article on all facets of this trade.
Someone above mentioned Billy Beane being a good GM (I totally agree). Thing about Beane is this, he hasn’t (yet) become gun shy after making a bad deal. Some GM’s seem to be scared too death of making a bad deal and essentially render themselves paralyzed. Beane just keeps pulling the trigger.

Whether the Rockies get the first pick in the draft or not really doesn’t matter because DoD is making the picks. I’m not exactly sure when DoD became GM 2000 or 2001 I think but among the many players he bypassed were Adam Wainwright, Cole Hamel, Scott Kazmir, Matt Cain, Phil Hughes, Gio Gonzalez, Yovani Galliardi, Evan Longari, Clayton Kersaw, Tim Lincicum, Matt Scherzer, Ric Porcella, Lance Lynn, Wade Miley, Shebly Miller and Mike Trout. He had a chance to… Read more »
Rox did not draft DODs son Chris. He was initially drafted by San Diego, released and picked up by Rox.
That QB you refer to? Do you actually mean Russell Wilson?

Russel Wilson. You are correct. But there was a 3 or 4 year period that the Rockies were alsways taking a college QB or football player. Perhaps thats why they passed on Trout because he was a baseball player.
Add Kyle Parker to the QB list. I think the bigger issue with DoD and the Rox draft history is that they seem to draft for need, which I think is a HUGE mistake in baseball. The maturation period is just too long. Draft the best player period. Look at the Cubs now, they have 3 elite SS prospects in the minors and Starlin Castro with the big club. They need pitching. Think they flip two of those 4 guys… Read more »

Right forgot about Parker. The fact that 20 other teams passed on Trout doesn’t make us not taking him the right thing to do. Take a drive on I-70 east of Denver towards Kansas. The speed limit is 75 and I don’t know how many people are in the left lane going 55. That doesn’t make it right. Nor the guy going 85 and passing you on the right shoulder. And of course DoD is the only one who is… Read more »

We keep on losing. I think it is time that the management make a statement – let’s revamp and reset the roster for 2015 and beyond. The question is should we be sellers at deadline or should we wait until the winter meeting to make big splashes? I say let Tulo finish the year with MVP type numbers to max his value and let CarGo return from his injury and show what a stud he is when healthy to maximize… Read more »

Just figure out where you are and when you hope to compete. Cubs did what the A’s do when they’re out of competition: unload the guys who won’t be there anymore when the team is ready to compete; reload with prospects who you hope will arrive in time for making a run. Cubs are looking at 2016. A’s are looking at 2014-15 (Samardzija is under their control through next year). Meanwhile, you tell me what the Rockies are thinking. Surely… Read more »
Well of course that is what they will say. They say it every year. And ownership gave themselves an out from the git go when Dick said “If we stay healthy, we’ll win 90 games’. If is rare for a baseball team to stay healthy all season, so the excuse it built in. I’m not disappointed in this season, as it is exactly what I thought it would be. Good start, short starts by the rotation, bullpen wears out, hitters… Read more »

Dickie says he’s happy to make playoffs once every five years–or some ridiculous number–which proves he doesn’t care about winning. The decision about Tulo will come down to Tulo and whether he’s serious about winning or if that’s just talk. I’d love for him to tell management to put up or trade me. Personally, I think Tulo is a great talent but he enjoys being the big fish in the little pond more than winning. He fits in perfectly with… Read more »
