As of May 2nd, Which is the Bigger Steal of a Trade?

As of May 2 – The Bigger Steal?

This off-season the much maligned Dan O’Dowd and Bill Geivett made two trades, one big that got a lot of derision and one small that was made to add depth to the team. So, which of the two has been better?

Option #1: Dexter Fowler and his $8 milllion salary with .350+ OBP for Jordan Lyles, ERA 5+ (team leader 3-0, 2.70)  and Brandon Barnes, 5th OF, currently hitting over .300 (add-in, cash saved went to Justin Morneau, your average .300 hitting 7 homer GG playing 1B)

Option #2: Johnny Herrera, fan and team favorite, career average .263, good D at 2B,3B and SS for LHP Franklin Morales (3-1, 4.38 ERA) and Chris Martin ( 3 appearances with no runs)

As of May 2nd…not sure which is the better steal. Kudos 33 days in to the GMs. Which do you pick?

I’ve been going to write sacrilege here for a few days praising the man we love to hate DOD. I’m sure some will say the law of averages simply caught up to the BIB GM,but regardless the winter deals and last several drafts all point to positives for the now and near future.I was a long time Helton supporter, loyal to the toddfather to the bitter end. However Justin Morneau has been Todd 2007 redux. What a plus he has been compared to… Read more »

The answer is easy for me – giving up jaredean’s favorite player for two pitchers that have given us meaningful performances.

Gary, I am the biggest Dan O’Dowd supporter around (yes, if the Rockies want to hire me to be a gopher, I am available). DOD and the Monforts, kept this team alive, granted not good, but alive, during a period when they were trying to figure out who they were going to be. The humidor, investing in Todd, quickly promoting the Toddlers and giving them a chance to become the 2007 team, signing CarGo (a Boras client), inking Tulo, getting… Read more »

Don’t want to throw water on any of this but it’s much too soon to grade a trade. I was a Dex fan so I didn’t like the deal but so far Lyles and Barnes have both been much better than I thought. And Charlie B has gotten to play everyday and he’s been great. But it hasn’t been 5 weeks yet. Dex had great months too when he looked like an All-Star so let’s wait for awhile. The other… Read more »

Bill, 100% correct. Way too soon to call winners and losers on the Fowler trade. However, not too soon on the Herrera, simply because Herrera really has no upside so we knew what we were giving up, a solid utility man of the sort that is readily available every November.
