There were several chapters in the fundamental playbook that were not executed today. That all added up to a 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The most damaging one was EdtheUmp favorite pet peeve: NEVER throw a strike with a 0-2 count on the batter. LaTroy Hawkins was one strike away from a save with a man on first and two outs against Dexter Fowler. He threw a cement mixer middle of the plate and belt high. His mistake ended up in the second deck.
The Cubs scored two unearned runs taking advantage of four errors and a bunch of walks lead to other runs. Jordan Lyles had walked the first batter in three straight innings (2nd – 4th). Daniel Descalso booted a grounder leading off the fifth inning starting a two-unearned run rally for the Cubs. Hawk came out of the bullpen to walk the first batter he faced who eventually scored to make the game 6-5 setting up Fowler’s heroics. The Rockies were 3-22 in franchise history when they commit four or more errors in a game before today. Throw in Mike McKenry’s drop of a foul pop up the elevator that kept the 5th inning rally alive for the Cubs.
The chorus to remove Hawk as a closer probably got louder today. I believe Dr_Christopher pointed out that the bullpen outside of Hawk has given up zero runs this year. They go to the House of Horrors in San Francisco for a three-game set starting tomorrow. The concerning trend is that the Rox have reverted back to last year’s performances.
