Bad Fundamentals Sink Rox 6-5

There were several chapters in the fundamental playbook that were not executed today.  That all added up to a 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs.  The most damaging one was EdtheUmp favorite pet peeve: NEVER throw a strike with a 0-2 count on the batter.  LaTroy Hawkins was one strike away from a save with a man on first and two outs against Dexter Fowler.  He threw a cement mixer middle of the plate and belt high.  His mistake ended up in the second deck.

The Cubs scored two unearned runs taking advantage of four errors and a bunch of walks lead to other runs.  Jordan Lyles had walked the first batter in three straight innings (2nd – 4th).  Daniel Descalso booted a grounder leading off the fifth inning starting a two-unearned run rally for the Cubs.  Hawk came out of the bullpen to walk the first batter he faced who eventually scored to make the game 6-5 setting up Fowler’s heroics.  The Rockies were 3-22 in franchise history when they commit four or more errors in a game before today.  Throw in Mike McKenry’s drop of a foul pop up the elevator that kept the 5th inning rally alive for the Cubs.

The chorus to remove Hawk as a closer probably got louder today.  I believe Dr_Christopher pointed out that the bullpen outside of Hawk has given up zero runs this year.  They go to the House of Horrors in San Francisco for a three-game set starting tomorrow.  The concerning trend is that the Rox have reverted back to last year’s performances.

Tough loss. A very winnable game that would have given us a series win and some momentum going into SF. Hawkins shouldn’t close. I vote for Ottavino. What’s Tulo’s batting average and strike out rate when pinch hitting? I think the average is low and the rate of strike outs is high, but that’s visceral. I’m sure Agbayani can tell us what they are. I might have gone with Ynoa, although Weiss has been pretty good so far with his… Read more »

Today’s game wipes away about all the good things from the the sweep in Milwaukee. Is Walt Weiss the last person in Colorado who knows that Hawkins shouldn’t be the closer? Blew 2 out of 3 saves the first week and was lousy the last half of spring training. I think Axford might be the guy as soon as he gets back to fantasy from real life. When doctors in Arizona of all places say it’s the worst rattle-snake bite… Read more »

OK. Time to see if the new regime is any more demanding than the old one. I love Hawk and appreciate his contributions. But right now he’s not a closer. He doesn’t have closer stuff. Give someone else the ball in the save situations.

Lots of bad old Rockies moments in this one, including lack of patience at the plate by guys who should be long past knowing when to take a deep breath and a pitch or two.

I’m glad I decided to go outside and do a little yardwork before the 9th inning rolled around. Really a game the Rockies didn’t deserve to win anyway, and as some folks here have noted, this is a telling moment for Walt Weiss: does he recognize that Descalso is no shortstop, and Hawkins no closer (or to be precise, no late-inning/close game guy) and adjust accordingly? Or does he dig in his heels and stick with those players in those… Read more »

Minors update: Nice starts for some key position prospects. Not nice starts on the pitching front. ABQ – Rex Brothers, 3 walks in 1 inning. Don’t hold your breath on him replacing Hawkins. Chris Rusin (lefty soft tosser on the 40-man roster; possible 5th starter) got shelled. Kyle Parker, now at .313/1.013 OPS. New Britain (AA) – OF prospect David Dahl, 1-4, picked up his 3rd SB. It would be very un-Rockies-like, but somehow I feel like we’ll see Dahl… Read more »

A lot of votes to pull LTH and insert Ottavino. As much as I like Ottavino, I think there is a much bigger risk we never GET to the 9th with a lead if that move is made. As a couple of you said, moving LTH to the 7th or 8th right now just moves the stat from a blown save to a blown hold. The troops are rallying and saying the right thing: they are sticking with LTH right… Read more »

Do you think Hawk would pull himself for the good of the team? Maybe an “early retirement” type of thing? If memory serves, Street only had 2 blown saves one year – possibly 2009? Sure, he had 2 blown saves in the playoffs that cost us big time, but regular season he was damn near perfect…

If the problem was velocity, I could see that. Hawk’s FB was 93 yesterday. Problem is pitch selection and location, and execution on slider which LTH says is “feel” is missing right now. Hawk missed badly with just about everything in the Alcantra AB. He was effectively wild in the Olt AB. Pitch Castillo hit was supposed to be outside corner, Hawk missed and left FB up. In Dex AB, Hawk missed location on first two FB strikes. McKenry then… Read more »

I said it all off-season, Hawk is not Closer. Ottavino is the best answer we have.

a thought or two going forward…(I’m guessing without dissent) 4-2 would have ben gladly accepted by we RWOers after 6 games. we could easily be 5-1, but let’s deal with reality now and for the next 25 games…ALL coming against NL west division foes. since we would, and do, like our 4-2 start, what would be an “acceptable” record we could live with after 31 games? I will posit that we will be no better than 14-17 (and I’m very… Read more »

Hey all, I, like Bill, had not posted for fear of jinxing us. Just watching the game yesterday did the trick for the jinx! Ed, taking us up to May 10th, before a long road trip to So Cal, I’m putting us at 12-13, and I even think that’s a bit optimistic. I’m just not sure how the road/home splits will shake out…but I did only give us series wins at home. NOTE: my education is not in math, so… Read more »
