Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects

Anyone read the top 100 prospects list?

SOURCE: Baseball America

Staff report  February 21, 2012

30 Drew  Pomeranz lhp, Rockies Age: 23. ETA: 2012.
Walk rate keeps dropping, from college (4.38 BB/9) to minors (3.74) to majors (2.45).
42 Nolan  Arenado 3b, Rockies Age: 20. ETA: 2013.
Should be a better version of former Rockies prospect Ian Stewart—less power but more contact.
86 Chad  Bettis rhp, Rockies Age: 22. ETA: 2013.
Tyler Matzek and other premium Colorado draft arms need to figure out what Bettis is doing.

87 Wilin  Rosario c, Rockies Age: 23. ETA: 2013.
His prospect stock took a tumble when his performance slipped post-knee surgery, but he still offers power and defense.

Bob, thanks for this post – had to “moderate” it because there were 2 links…i agree with Nolan a bit higher than BA has him, but not sure i’d go to 20th as Kevin has him…42nd too low, 20th too high (although my gut says he will be much higher if he starts the season the way he ended it last year)…

Julian I only put up the top 3 Rockies. I really don’t put much stock in the these “top 100” lists. I had to laugh when I read the comment about Arenado. It wasn’t that long ago when Ian Stewart was rank #4 overall on one of these lists.

If anyone is an Insider to ESPN, perhaps you can let me know which Rockies they have in their top 100 from here (http://tinyurl.com/78fe7fa) and i’ll update the list above to cover all 3 reports…

Just curious, but why does anyone care about stuff like this? Is it a fantasy baseball thing or something?
I’m not criticizing – if this interests you then more power to you. But what does it mean? Do we get a $4 discount on beer because we have 4 guys on the list?

ha! no discount that i know of…i find it interesting what others around the nation that follow player development closely think of our system…yes, they are mostly bunk, but it is nice seeing our guys higher up in the “top 100” lists…obviously they are extremely subjective in that none of them are even remotely close to the other and wildly different from year to year, but the same way some people watch the NCAA Ranking to see how high up… Read more »

Thanks for replying. That answer makes perfect sense to me and is about what I expected, especially the 0.0043% faith in the meaningfulness of the list. There seems to be a general resentment at RWO/ITR that the Rox have drafted poorly or mismanaged talent. Guys like Stewart were a bust while Blackmon and Herrera came down to earth after a hot start. Maybe this helps those with purple glasses (or purple kool-aid) to believe that the next crop of talent… Read more »

I’m usually a “what is the team doing to win now” fan, so for me the list gives me an idea of what cards the team has to play if needed to trade for a player to send us to the next level. Like in 2007 offseason I was praying and hoping the team would deal Chacin and Stewart for a CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay type player. Of course the team, even when on the doorstep of a… Read more »

Another good answer. If we need to make a trade, the perception that these guys are good is going to net the Rockies more in return.

Rockies drafts have been a mixed bag overall. Some really good picks (Tulo, Fowler), and some really bad ones (Reynolds, Weathers). O’Dowd & Co. did stock two playoff teams with predominately home grown players, but he also squandered some really high picks. One thing that’s for sure: he’s grossly overvalued his prospects. Example: As soon as it became obvious that Tulo was the real deal – and that was almost right away – it was time to move Chris Nelson.… Read more »

Just the opposite guys, as I really love to follow and track the progress of the minor league prospects. It really is an art to be able to tell the marginal MLB prospects from the AAAA players (Shealy, Koshansky, etc). Just as one example – Josh Rutledge had a monster season in 2011 at A-ball Modesto, but still doesn’t crack many prospect lists. Just a quick side note – I still in withdrawal over losing the monthly ITR farm report… Read more »
