From my office window (about 5 linear miles from Coors), the clouds are breaking up and the cement are dried up. Unless there’s a u-turn from Mother Nature we should be able to complete a traditional doubleheader today. The first game is at 1:10 MDT with the second game 30 minutes after the first game. Tickets for today’s game can be used for both games according to the team spokesman.
During Monday’s delayed start of the game, ROOT analysts had a good discussion about the Rockies offense. They are in the top three in batting average and OBP. Then they showed the actual runs score statistics and we were near the bottom of the league. Everybody, including the casual fans, can see that the offense are not working together as a team to manufacture runs. The analysts showed that we were dead last in drawing walks. Ryan Spilborghs delved deeper into the problem and talked about swings at balls inside or outside of the zone. He pointed out that the Rockies are swinging at balls out of the zone way above the league average. Fix that problem (stop expanding your own zone) and it’s easily fixable. Looking at you, CarGo. Yes sir, talking to you CarGo.
Of course on the other side of the ball, the pitchers are issuing walks and HBPs at unprecedented rates. If they didn’t issue a walk, normally it’s because they ran up a three-ball count and the hitters have easy time hammering the get-me-0ver pitches.
The Monday and Tuesday rain outs undoubtedly helped the bullpen tremendously and everybody return to their normal roles. Rockies even have another off-day tomorrow after today’s doubleheader. ROOT previously had no television scheduled for today, but they are showing both games live today, thank you. During the rainy days, it gave the RWOers a lot of time to sit back and talk all things Rockies. sdcarp has an excellent post going with excellent ideas tossed around. Hopefully somebody from the Rox brass will read our website.

I will write one post game article for both games late tonight. Feel free to use this thread for comments until then. (I am at work and then have a meeting tonight until after 6 pm)
How I loved the days of the doubleheader! Nothing better than going to the park 2-for-1. I’ll bet I haven’t been to one in about 20 years though.
It just keeps getting worse. You can’t fire 25 players. Is Weiss’s job at risk?
Matzek lasted only 2 innings? WIth two added days of rest? Yikes, his potential appears to be rapidly diminishing. 7 pitchers to go 9 innings? Double Yikes.
And Tulo commits another error leading to runs and has an 0-fer. Hurt or simply tuned out?
Young Pitcher Whisperer Nick Hundley led Mr. Matzek by the hand en route to a 6 walk/2 inning performance.
(REMINDER: these snarky comments are not meant to insult Hundley, who in my estimation is doing nothing wrong. They are to insult Rockies management for insulting OUR intelligence by suggesting that acquiring a veteran “handler of pitchers” would be a reason for hope this year)
I live for Snark!
Just my opinion but I don’t believe that Hundley has a clue on how to call a game when Matzek is pitching. Continually calling for the same pitch when the pitcher can’t get that pitch over the plate doesn’t work, but it sure makes for a lot of walks.
I thought Fort McHenry was his regular catcher.
cant anybody play the outfield anymore? Blacknmon loks like a schlub and why is ynoa in LF???
Apparently Cargo can’t play a doubleheader and Dickerson has a hurt foot. Since they are only carrying four outfielders total that only leaves Ynoa to fill in when two of the outfielders are down.
Good Lord … Ynoa in LF. That’s what this idiotic roster management has brought us. Reminds me of the previous time we hit bottom when Luis Gonzalez the Lesser (a utility infielder) was a semi-regular in RF.
Do the Rockies not have any scouting reports on their opponents minor league guys? Seems like we endlessly make every call-up look like an All-Star.
Cargo looks like Charlie Brown, always swinging on the 2 strike slider away, just like CB would always try to kick the football held by Lucy, even though he knew she’d be pulling it away….
Camera panned the infield — looks like that Baltimore game! And we didn’t even need a riot to keep fans away from our ongoing baseball disaster.
Process this Rox fans: In the offseason our management team decided to double-down on a bad strategy and go with the roster that we had……….known amongst the kool kids here at RWO as the PAT. So after the big picture bad decision was made, “all” that was needed was improve our depth. Let’s examine the outcome – Delcalso (fail), Ynoa (fun guy, but borderline fail), McHenry (fail), Stubbs (fail), Rosario (fail), starting pitching at AAA (huge fail), major league ready… Read more »
Wrong on McHenry. He continues to produce for a backup.
carp, I’m starting a Bridich-Harvard Truther site. I need to see the actual degree. I mean, the guy gave Drew Stubbs almost 6 million bucks and brought in our futility infielder Descalso, then “improved the pitching” by signing a good pitcher? NO. Too easy By signing a CATCHER. Oh, and then sent down to AAA our best hitter so far this season, and our only righthanded bat off the bench.
Warning, compadres: Negativity ahead! Spiritless doubleheader loss. Rock-fucking-bottom, much earlier than usual! Carp lately has posted interesting and beautifully thought-out theoreticals; I’ll be pretty old by the time the light shines in that radical scenario (which it never will unless Monfort takes a hard turn in one way or another), but thanks for the reading and theorizing on what in the world might work in the two-decade-long puzzle. Poor Walt – he looks about ten years older tonight. Poor Tulo,… Read more »
You’re actually the type fan (I’m the same way) that could appreciate a nuclear rebuild and tolerate 3-4 years of 60 win seasons if you knew we were following a road map to success and there was light at the end of the tunnel.
70 win seasons muddling aimlessly through the netherworld year after year is far worse.
So right. There’s a giant “IF” in there. The road map leads who knows where, even if put in place? :-/
Yup, it’s not even May 10 and baseball season is pretty much ruined. It could turn around, but c’mon… Christie Brinkley could ring my doorbell too. A few thoughts… Trevor Story seems to be the Next Big Thing. Are we getting propaganda to soften the blow of the impending loss of Tulo or is it possible that the loss of Tulo will be little more than a bump in the road? Of course, they’ll probably trade Tulo for a 5th… Read more »
Five stars, Iggy. Especially about Cargo. What the?!?
Low point for me — Tuffy Grosewich (sp?), second baseman hitting .176 (career average: .202) at the plate. Runners at the corners. 1 out. Rox down 3 runs. Top of the 8th. Still a chance. Drops a nice bunt down the 3rd base line. Squeeze. Arenado is playing back … way back. Regular depth, not even with the bag, etc. Comes storming in to field it, but way too late. 4 run lead, total killer. OK, maybe they’re hoping double… Read more »
Ten stars for this comment.
There’s a folly going on at Coors Field. Now we are healthy except for Otto and we’re still playing as bad as as last year’s AA team. Might as well start a new show called Rockies Tonight Show and I nominate Agbayani to host this show on DPTV with all the funny one liners the RWOers came up with lately. It is now up to Bridich to send a message to the fans that he sees the same thing as… Read more »
I don’t get the “give-up” line-up for Game #2, against a call-up pitcher making his MLB debut. With two extra days off. AND they have tomorrow off. Saving everyone for LA, resting up for Kershaw and Greinke, along with the dearly departed B. Anderson who will no doubt have a Cy Young worthy night against his former mates.
