Betancourt Option Declined

It comes as no surprise that the Rockies have declined the $4.25 Million option on Rafael Betancourt for next season.

Although Betancourt was extremely effective in the first part of 2012, he ended the season on the DL more than the mound and finished the year looking at a choice between the knife or the couch, thanks to his jacked up elbow.  He decided to undergo Tommy John’s, after initially saying he would just rest to try and get better, and that choice basically sealed his fate when it came to the team picking up his option.

Thank you elbow. Never, ever liked this guy as our closer. He may have been effective most of the time and was a positive influence in the bullpen, but something just didn’t fit for me. I’m guessing I am in the minority here and am ready to “take heat” for my illogical stance. Bring it on! I would love for Raffy to have been the bridge to the ninth. Not anymore. Who would have been our closer you might ask?… Read more »

Looking forward to at least a lunch or 2 buddy. Temps finally dropped and we’re looking at highs in the 70s!

Just because I’ve been thinking it all day…I HATE the Red Sox….but Ortiz hitting .688 in the series…WOW. Saw some St Louis stuff about how bad they were with RISP….welcome to our party Cards fans….

I agree with throwing Rex Brothers into the fire. But I disagree about using Belisle as closer. Perhaps it’s overuse, but he seems like another Huston Street to me. When he’s hot he is very good, but he is too inconsistent, and would not be reliable enough to be closer. I think the Rockies should take hope that a team like the Cards can go all the way to the WS. Their offense was completely anemic at the end, and… Read more »

Hey Ed, I enjoyed reading your interpretation of the obstruction call on the other thread.
If you wouldn’t mind, I have an obstruction question pending on the AEtU thread that happened in a little league game this summer. Thanks!

Hey Jaredean – what do you think about establishing 2 Hot Stove threads, 1 for the Rox, 1 for MLB in general non-Rox?

Saunders in the DP today runs through some Rox 2013 stats. Some obvious conclusions: pretty good at home, awful on the road. Starting pitching much improvement, bullpen much much worse. He also draws some rather poorly though-out conclusions like “this team can win with LeMahieu at 2B.” Which is true, in that the Cardinals can (and did) win with Pete Kozma at SS. But you better have a Cardinals-type lineup if you’re going to hope to score enough runs with… Read more »

I agree with the thought process on Loney. I know you’re discussing free agents, and limiting your thinking to “in the box” to mimic the Rox front office. But I’m going to break the rules, go “out of the box,” and think trade (ie – this will never happen!). Rumor is the Halos might shop Mark Trumbo. He would certainly fit the description of a big right handed bat. His 1B defensive metrics aren’t terrible, and he can also play… Read more »

I agree that the Rockies should make a hard push for Loney. Don’t you think that with the market being the way it is, we’d have to pay him at least what we paid Helton in his last year, and wouldn’t he require a two or three year contract? I disagree on DJ. He’s fine for now particularly when you factor in how little he gets paid at this point, which leaves us more money for positions of greater need.… Read more »

Julian, you’re probably right on 2B. I saw somewhere that the Rockies’ ownership is limiting O’Dowd to adding $5-9 million in 2014 salary. So a reliever and a Loney type plus some non-roster invitees may be it …. maybe not even that if salaries go up.

How do the dollars net out between 2014 salary increases for players such as Tulo and Cargo and the savings from the 2013 players who will not be on the roster in 2014, such as Helton and Betancourt?

When I hear the “increase payroll by $5-9 million” thing, I’m assuming that already takes into account dumping Betancourt’s salary, increases in other guy’s salaries, etc. So that’s just not much to work with. I assume it also takes into account the payments Helton is due in retirement thanks to his restructuring of his contract a couple years ago.

There has been quite a bit of discussion on this site for time about trading Tulo to STL. In reading some articles from St. Louis in the aftermath of their WS loss, it appears that the Cards will be looking to upgrade in CF. It doesn’t appear that they are ready to hand over CF to their prized minor league prospect Oscar Taveras. Wouldn’t a better fit between the Cards and Rox be a trade for Fowler and perhaps a… Read more »

Cisco, that is exactly what I was thinking. Tulo instead of Pete Kozma could very well have been the difference in this series. Given the wealth of young talent the Cards have and given that some other key players are in their primes, moving Tulo and/or Cargo to the Cards would make perfect sense. That’s why those rumors never go away. I think Shelby Miller was fine healthwise but was just shut down (but kept on the roster) based on… Read more »

Renck reports that the Rockies are interested in Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz. The idea would be have Ruiz catch most of the time with Rosario moving (1B? OF?). Because we all know how well the last 35 year old catcher acquisition worked! (Hint: Ramon Hernandez)

We no longer have to be concerned about the Rockies signing Ruiz. He has reached an agreement with the Phillies on a 3 year deal with an option for a fourth year.

There’s an interesting article on mlbtraderumors.com. listing the top 50 free agents and their projected free agent salaries and where they might go. Ruiz is #29 and is projected to make 14 million dollars over two years. I don’t see the Rockies spending that type of money on a catcher. Given how bad Cuddyer is as an outfielder, it makes sense to move him to first base (or trade him at the top of his value if they can land… Read more »

Since weed is legal in Colorado we should go after C.Perez the Indians didn’t pick up his option. He and his wife’s weed business would fit right in here! Also Ubaldo is on the market.Think he’d ever come back with the management bums who basicly canned him still in charge? Never mind-just read he will command[ironic choice of words] 30-35 million.

What do you all think about the Rockies and Belisle exercising their mutual option? I have my doubts, but given the crazy marketplace for players, it seems like a decent risk that Belisle will bounce back and be worth 4.25 million. Hopefully we’ll add at least one reliever by free agency or trade.

I haven’t been active or even reading this site for the past 5 or 6 weeks. Been overworked and underpaid. But of course it’s my business so I only have myself to blame. I love Ag’s thought about Loney. It makes so much sense the Rocks probably won’t do it. One of the reasons Arenado won the Gold Glove was that Helton saved him a bunch of throwing errors. Loney’s a decent hitter, not much power, but probably more power… Read more »

I’d take two out of five in a heartbeat, and so would about 28 other teams’ fans.Only a few elite organizations would complain about four times per decade.

I would be ecstatic if the end result is 2 out of 4. The reality is 3 out of 20. I’m not good with fractions, but I don’t think they are equal.

The Rockies and Matt Bellisle have both picked up his mutual option.

Reid Brignac, Edgmer Escalona, Rafael Betancourt, Jeff Francis, Todd Helton, Roy Oswalt, Yorvit Torrealba, Manny Corpas, Jeff Manship, Tyler Colvin, Logan Kensing, Hisanori Takahashi, and Chris Volstad have all declared free agency.

And Charlie Monfort busted for another DUI up in Weld County. I guess Kiszla was right. Meanwhile, sober owner Dickie continues to show his own impaired judgement by picking up Belisle’s option. Belisle is still a serviceable reliever, but with very limited money to spend this winter was committing $4.5 million to him really the best bang for your buck?

Don’t forget, Belisle is family so there was never any doubt he’d be resigned. Meanwhile, the SMIB continues to feed the press with how the Rox are pursuing a boatload of free agents, all of whom will sign somewhere else for the extra $$ the small-market Rox just couldn’t compete with. How’s the restaurant renovation coming along boys?

I wonder if Randy Messenger is a fit. He has excelled in Japan the past three years, a 32 year old right handed pitcher with a below 3.00 ERA over there. He wants 8M to 10M per year for two years which seems like a deal for us since we were something like 0-22 with the guys we tried to plug in as 5th starters.

Ed, keep the AFL reports coming. I think they’re wrapping up the season right? How’s Matzek look? As for Kyle Parker: he’s the Great Hitting Hope so they’ve got to play him. The bad news is stats-wise he isn’t really earning it. He’s at .278/.325/.472 (797 OPS) in the AFL, which sounds kind of o.k., but isn’t impressive at all when you consider that right now there’s 5 guys with an OPS over 1.000, and Parker’s OPS comes in 25th… Read more »

After hearing the absurd, I figured I would check in here to see if anything was posted. Glad to see nothing. The Rockies interested in a 30 yr old for $100m? HAHAHA. Sorry I’m just not a Brian McCann fan.

Where the hec did Heyman get that from? The Renck? I guess they need to fill tv time now and any and all alleged *rumors* are fair game?

There’s a source other than Renck reporting the Rox and Cards will talk Tulo trade (Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports). Passan also reports the Rangers are waiting in the wings with Andrus or Profar. The names Matt Adams and Shelby Miller are mentioned. Alright Rox Front Office dufus’s – this is a bit of a no-brainer. If you can get Adams/Miller/Carlos Martinez AND get rid of the bulk of Tulo’s contract – DO IT! I’ll do the math for you… Read more »

The Cards deal for Tulo just makes too much sense to go away. I’d do it for Shelby Miller (assuming his arm is fine; they shut him down but I think that was an innings limit thing) and Oscar Taveras. If they won’t give up Taveras there’s other good young prospects in that incredibly great system. They can keep Matt Adams. Profar is so highly ranked that it would be a one for one deal with the Rangers. A dark… Read more »

Stupid move of the year (yes, it tops anything the Rox have done) – Braves are seriously considering (in fact, it’s apparently a “done deal”) moving to Cobb County. For those not familiar with that area – let me translate – “white suburbia!” Not served by MARTA. Intersection of 75 and 285. Some of the worst traffic on the planet. Let me say again – no MARTA.

But haven’t they been drawing weak attendance even with “MARTA”? Have there been crime and safety issues at current venue?
