Betty on DL, Escalona DFA’d and Scahill Called Up

In a flurry of Friday moves the Rockies put Rafael Betancourt on the DL with a “right elbow injury”. We won’t know the extent of the injury until the MRI scheduled on Monday. It is feared that he tore his ulnar ligament.

Rob Scahill has been called back up to join the big boys after the team DFA’d Edgmer Escalona who went 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA since joining the team.

Chacin will be activated for tonight’s game against the Marlins.

Might have a slight upside given Edgmer lately. Sorry to hear about Rafael’s possible career-ender. No, he hasn’t been great the last year but he sure was for a good long while, and a class act. Time to go one way or the other, I guess.

I never liked Escalona. Somewhat plus velocity but little movement and a very inconsistent (often hanging) slider. Unlikely to ever put together sustained success. To me Scahill has more talent. Plus fastball with some good natural/sinker movement. Who knows, but he seems to have the tools to become a solid reliever. On the “we needed to dump Josh Roenicke for this?” front: 3.18 ERA as a Twins workhorse. Other stats suggest he continues to benefit from a streak of luck,… Read more »

with all the bullpen churn and failures, the Roenicke stupidity still sticks in my craw too.

The hacks over at KOA spewed out an interesting stat on this season: In games started by Chacin/DLR/Chatwood/Nicasio, the team is 50-39. In games started by others, the team is 9-31. It’s been obvious to all of us that have followed the team all season that the 5th spot in the rotation has been a black hole, but has that been the main reason for the dismal season? Hasn’t the inconsistent offense been the biggest culprit? Let’s hope that this… Read more »

Well tonight the power hitting right handed bat was Wheeler although I have no idea if that was an aberration or not but at least it was fun. In the thread last night Ego was wondering why anybody was still watching the Rockies. I understand the thought. But the reason why I watch is because I love to watch baseball. Almost all baseball no matter who is playing and I’ll find a team to root for and then do so.… Read more »

Don’t know about execs in the clubhouse, but the Steinbrenner/Billy M./Reggie J.days were full of stories of the big boss sending messengers down to the dugout to tell Billy what to do during games.Which Martin notoriously ignored!Doubt Walt has any such latitude.

Thanks for describing why we watch. For love of the game. And yes, it helps to have MLB Extra Innings and another team ;-). But the Rockies are always #1 and I am not into diagnostics or bitterness at this point. Nor anger at dashed hopes, nor laying blame. Just accepting what it is at present and enjoying the good: A third baseman who is a whiz with the glove and will only get better with the bat. A second… Read more »

Rumors have Jerry DiPoto out with the Angels-anyone like to see him here to replace DOD?

YES!

I’ll second that. Angels spent a ton and have nothing to show for it, but what else was DiPoto gonna do when ownership said here’s a couple hundred million, go buy me a World Series? We all could’ve guessed that Pujols would decline, but that fast? That Josh Hamilton wouldn’t be worth the end of his deal, but the start? It’s almost as if these guys stopped taking some magic potion when they signed their deals …

I wouldn’t mind seeing DiPoto here. He has some ties and has experience. I think DoD has had his chance to shine and hasn’t. Of course my baseball conspiracy theory is that the only reason some people keep their jobs is that they have dirty pictures of their boss or bosses. No other logical reason why they have their jobs. DoD still has those pictures. By the way by not paying attention last night I mistakenly call Wheelr, “perhaps a… Read more »

Anyone have any idea as to why Manship gets 4 starts and McHugh gets sent down after just one spot start?

Agbayani

Cisco, I was wondering the same thing. You could also say the same for Volstad. At any rate McHugh looks to be your standard replacement level 5th starter (in fact he threw a shutout his last time out for the Sky Sox if I’m not mistaken) whereas Manship has proven he’s sub-replacement level. You could also say the same Moscoso last year — standard replacement level guy who got very little chance despite O’Dowd having thought he got value in… Read more »
