Biggest Surprise Coming Out Of Spring Training?

Barring injuries, the Rockies opening starters are pretty well set, with exception of a fifth starter for the rotation.  As such, we pretty much “know” that the following guys will make the roster:

1] 1B Helton
2] 2B Scutaro
3] SS Tulo
4] 3B Blake
5] C Hernandez
6] LF Cargo
7] CF Fowler
8] RF Cuddyer
9] DH Giambi (that glove is going to gather dust with Cuddyer on the roster]
10] SP1 Gurthrie
11] SP2 Chacin
12] SP3 Pomeranz
13] SP4 Nicasio
14] CLS Betancourt
15] RP1 Bothers
16] RP2 Belisle
17] RP3 Reynolds

Who fills out the remaining eight slots is substantially less certain, but here is my guess:

18] Pacheco – maybe but not sure the Rockies will trust him two games/wk?
19] Nelson
20] EY2 – might be traded?
21] Blackmon
22] Outman
23] Putnam – sleeper but has prospect status.
24] Roenicke – I really liked what he did last year.
25] Rogers – see EY2.

So there you have it, and that is why I will predict that Outman will win a starting rotation spot, and as such will be the BIGGEST surprise of Spring Training 2012.  Since my pick here is pretty obscure, who IS going to bust out this spring, make the roster, and have a significant impact on the Rockies in the first couple months?  And it is NOT fair to make your prediction on April 1st (fools day) either!

I have to say after the Smith trade was made, I was also high on Outman.

Based on reports so far, seems like Blackmon may have the early lead for the 4th OF slot, with Nelson in the lead for the IF super-utility slot. I’m not a EYJr fan, but I hope he plays well enough to be a tradeable commodity.

I think Brandon Wood makes the team

I don’t think Blake is a lock at all. I hope he can still play, but early reports aren’t promising. If he continues to look bad the Rox will release him prior to his salary becoming guaranteed. Nelson, Herrera, Wood? Not much to get excited about. Right now, I’d say Wood has the best shot. He’s a very good defensive third baseman, and he came up as a SS. Nelson is out of options and I think pretty much out… Read more »

Due to techinical difficulties, I wrote that piece a couple of weeks ago, so you guys have the benefit of some hind sight now. Still I will keep my Outman selection at least until Moyer realizes that he is almost 50 years old and can’t pitch anymore.

I am also guessing that the “other” votes are for Arenado?

My other vote was for Wood. Arenado won’t break camp with the team. That’s my thinking.

I agree with you egossage. Wood was my sleeper coming into camp. Same draft, same round (1st), same minor league numbers as Ian Stewart. He’s not as good defensively but he is basically a RH Stewart. Age 27 with a fresh start in an offensive ballpark. Like Stewart he has a track record of Major League failure, but if he puts it together, there is reason to believe that it is real.

Moyer will be our 5th starter, IMO. He has looked impressive. With just over three weeks left it, realisticly, is much too early to be able to come up with the twenty-five man roster for opening day. It is fun to speculate however. I also think Blake makes it no matter what…he is a proven big-leaguer and stats at ST don’t mean squat(offensive stats I mean). Blackman is looking very comfortable at the plate so I believe is another lock.… Read more »

I agree with many of you that Blake won’t make the cut, and Arenado will be in AAA for a few months with Rosario. JT loves his movable parts so I look for him to keep Nelson, Pacheco, and Brandon Wood. I don’t think Johnny Sparkplug has any options left, but I don’t think he’ll be picked up by anyone else and will be in CS waiting. EY and Rogers will be gone. I think Blackmon wins the 4th outfield… Read more »

Doc, Jonathan Herrera does have an option left. EY2, Nelson and Rogers do not have any options left.

5th starter is Moyer. Rest of bullpen is Outman, Moscoso, and Chatwood. Hard throwers who can pitch multiple innings. Blackmon is 4th OF, Nieves is backup C until Rosario is ready. Blake is cut and Wood makes the team for now. Nelson is utility guy. That makes 25. Your 17 above and the 4 pitchers and 4 fielders I predicted. I am not sure Reynolds is a lock for the pen, but need that extra lefty. Although Outman can fill… Read more »

I think its a must that the Rockies go with either Nelson or Wood at 3B. To me it makes no sense to even start the spring with them if you weren’t open to give them a chance if they legitimately beat out Blake and Arenado. Wood looks like he’s ahead at this point. I like Pacheco, but since he’s got options I suppose I would start him in AAA. As for pitching, I would start White down at AA… Read more »

Not really, honestly. A few guys like Roenicke and Reynolds concern me a little, but for the most part I like this pen a lot.

Yes,I am.I am concerned about how many of these guys are unknown commodities-at least to all of us.Also an injury or two[knock on wood],to the returning core of four and we are in deep trouble.

The Purple Row insiders tell me (thru tweets) that he has a not so good attitude, but I think Edgmer Escalona has a decent shot at working out of the pen. I don’t see his name anywhere in this thread. But he’s way ahead of Rogers for the pen IMHO.

Hernandez, Helton, Scutero, Tulo, Blake, Gonzo, Dex, Cuddy start
Blackmon, Giambi, Pacheco, Wheeler, Fields, Nieves back up.

Guthrie, Chacin, Pomeranetz, Nicasio, Moyer (in that order)
Betancourt, Belisle, Reynolds, White, Outman, Chatwood relieve

This gives the mix of grey beards and youth that is more in balance. Blake and Hernandez are only placeholders until Arenado and Rosario get a little more polish.

Brandon Wood just might as well be the biggest surprise of the spring. The Rox saw a hole in his swing mechanics before they acquired him. After acquring him, they met with him before ST and told him to adjust his mechanics. He’s been responding well and getting used to his new stance. It was a stand more upright adjustment; remember Tulo went through the same thing?

Edgmer Escalona just breezed through one inning with three strikeouts sandwiched around a single.
