STORY, PAULSEN GO DEEP IN 8TH
Rox’n’sox is still diggin’ the long ball. Trevor Story hit a solo shot in the 8th, and Ben Paulsen followed 2 batters later with a 3-run banger. The Colorado Rockies defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 Monday night at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati behind 7 exquisite innings from starting pitcher Jordan Lyles (1-1, 6.00).
Lyles, who had been stinking-up the show in his first two outings, handcuffed the Reds on 4 hits and a walk. He struck-out 4 and set-down 15 of the first 16 hitters he faced, getting a break in the 5th when Jay Bruce tried to stretch a lead-off double and got nailed on a miracle tag by Nolan Arenado at 3rd-base. Lyles surrendered an unearned run in the 6th when Zack Cozart singled with 2 out and former Rockie Jordan Pacheco doubled. Cozart had pulled-up at 3rd when Gerardo Parra’s throw from left-field skipped in front of Story and caromed off his shin, allowing Cozart to sprint home.
The Rockies had gone-out by 1 in the 2nd with some small ball. Arenado had a single, Paulsen walked, and Brandon Barnes sacrificed them into scoring position. RWO favorite Cristhian Adames grounded to short, scoring Arenado before Tony Wolters grounded out. That held until the Cincinnati run in the 6th, and it was 1-1 with 2 out when Story blasted reliever Ross Ohlendorf’s first-pitch fastball out by the smokestacks. Carlos Gonzalez followed with a single, and Arenado walked to bring-up 1st-baseman Paulsen. Reds’ manager Bryan Price went to the ‘pen for Jumbo Diaz, and Paulsen drove a 97 MPH fastball into the batter’s eye in center, about 10 yards northeast of Story’s shot, to drive a stake into the heart of Cincinnati.
Chad Qualls, another RWO favorite, got the first 3 outs in the 8th (Ivan De Jesus struck-out and reached on a wild pitch), and Boone Logan closed it out. Logan stayed-on and retired the Reds 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Game 2 of the 3-game set is tonight, 5:10 pm again at Great American. Jorge De La Rosa goes for the Rockies against Cincinnati’s Randall Simon in a lefty-righty face-off.
