The Atlanta Braves defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-3 Monday night at Turner Field in Atlanta before a crowd of 23, 17 of whom were family members of Rockies Charlie Blackmon, Ben Paulsen, and Kyle Parker. In an effort to stir-up a little more interest in tonight’s rematch, the Braves have contacted the El Ranchito Taco Shop of Lake Elsinore, California to set-up a “Taco Tuesday,” but unfortunately El Ranchito has a prior commitment for the contest between the local Storm and the Modesto Nuts, although the shop has agreed to FedX a batch out in the case the Nuts are unable to make it out of Bakersfield again this morning.
Julio Teheran (9-6, 4.29) got the win for Atlanta, going 7 and a third innings and holding Colorado to 3 runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts. Charlie Blackmon got things going when he homered to right on Teheran’s 4th pitch of the game. The Braves answered in the bottom of the inning when Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (7-6, 4.61) walked Freddie Freeman with 2 out and served-up a shot into the empty seats in left-center field by Jonny Gomes.
Colorado tied things-up in the 2nd when Paulsen led off with a homer, but the Braves went back on top in the 4th with Adonis Garcia taking De La Rosa deep to center. Atlanta added runs in the 5th and 6th to run the score out to 5-2, and the Rockies rallied for one in the top of the 8th against Teheran, Ross Detwiler and Edwin Jackson, but Blackmon was the 3rd out at the plate attempting to score from 2nd on a short single to right by Brandon Barnes. Arodys Viscaino finished for the Braves, setting Nolan Arenado, Paulsen, and DJ LeMahieu down 1-2-3 in the 9th.
Atlanta is hoping the tacos come through from California as the squads go back at each other tonight at 5:10 MDT at the former Olympic Stadium south of downtown. Chad Bettis returns from the Disabled List to start for the Rockies against Mike Foltynewicz of the Braves.
