As painful as it has been to watch the last couple of games against the Dodgers, and make no mistake – it has been VERY painful – the Rockies have a chance to at least avoid the sweep tonight with their best pitcher on the mound: Edison Volquez.
You heard that right, Volquez is the Rockies best pitcher: or at least the best pitcher they could hope to face from pretty much any opponent. It’s like the WAR for the Rockies is greatest with Eddie V on the mound in “opposition”, pretty much guaranteeing a V for victory.
To say the Rockies “own” Volquez is an understatement. The record of 0-4 with a 13.08 ERA (21.1 ip, 31 er) in five starts this season point to Volquez pretty much being the 10th man on the Rockies roster anytime he takes the mound. Over his career he is 3-7 with a 7.71 ERA vs the Rox.
Sadly, CaroGo has the best average against him this season (.714), but if Carlos see’s any time on the field, it will most likely be in front of the plate, not next to it.
Others that have great ERA’s vs the V:
JOHNNY SPARKPLUG: .600
WILLIAM FOWLER: .600
COREY DICKERSON: .600
YORVIT TORREALBA: .500
TODD HELTON: .500
WILIN ROSARIO: .455
MICHAEL CUDDYER: .400
Even our good friend Jorge De La Rosa is hitting .500 against Volquez, so we are lucky he is in the lineup and looking for his 16th win.

Why the sparkplug isn’t at 2nd base with his .600 ERA, as opposed to Rutledge who hasn’t hit Volquez this year, is a mystery…sure, Rut has a .333 OBP against him – but Johnny has a .600 OBP.
You’re right Jare. Tonight is a gift (if they get the game in) It’s not just the Rockies that own Volquez either. I do not believe he has won a game in the NL West this season.
and that’s why i’m surprised the Rockies didn’t sign him and the Dodgers did!
Rut got his triple in first AB.
Volquez reminds me of 2012 rockies starting pitcher. Starts off everyone with 0~2 count and then get hit hard.
I think September when you are out of the race is experimentation time. And so I don’t mind seeing Ruteledge instead of Herrara. We know what Johnny H can do. However what I would like to see is Josh trying other positions. Either the OF or 1B. He probably can hit well enough to stick in the bigs but he’s too much of a defensive liability in the middle infield. If they can move Culbertson to the OF, they certainly… Read more »
Prophetic about his D at 2nd…
Brought Cargo in for the right inning this time! And I am surprised to hear that Jorge leads the league in wins! Oh, what might have been, behind the good starters (the last thing expected to go right…)
First time a Rockies pitcher has ever led the NL in wins this late in the season. And you can thank Manuel Corpas as his two HUGE strikeouts of Crawford and Puig saved the game.Great to see Todd give the fans some more memories.Would have been great if he and L.Walker could have stayed healthy for a couple of more years in their careers to see what kind of numbers they would have finished with.ESPN ignoring Todd’s 2500 was shameful—-and typical… Read more »
Sorry to be a downer, but the Dodgers put in Volquez with a Sunday line-up behind him, the Rockies have their wins leader on the mound, and they still barely manage to eek out a win. This team has way too many holes in it.
The announcers jinxed Arenado. They talked about his having stayed healthy and played the most games of any Rockie, and he leaves the game with a sore thumb. Bummer.
