Butler Announcement Infuses Energy

Last night nobody wanted to talk about the Rox game, instead talking about two obvious moves that were made.  The Rockies did announce that Eddie Butler will be called up to replace Franklin Morales as the starter Friday night.  That was what RWOers have been waiting to hear for nearly a month.  Morales will be moved to the bullpen.  He has easily the best ERA first time through the lineup than the second and third time through making him ideal for long relief.  The other topic of discussion centered around a move that should have been made a few weeks ago – putting CarGo on the DL.  For over a month, CarGo has disrupted the batting order rhythm by trying to play through his left index finger inflammation and knee tendinitis.  Corey Dickerson has earned the right to play everyday with his hitting prowess.  It was just a matter of time before he can be an everyday left fielder.  The moves remove two white elephants from the room.  There was a surprise move that showed that the overly patient management is sending a strong message:  We are going to put the best 25 players on the team.  Jordan Pacheco was DFA’ed and Mike McKenry was called back to take his spot.  Ryan Wheeler is sharing the bus ride north with McKenry as he takes CarGo’s spot on the 25-man roster.

Jordan Lyles (5-1, 3.41 ERA) will take on Josh Collmenter (4-2, 3.34 ERA) in the second game of a three-game series.  It was around early June 2013 when Lyles was with the Astros that he started having trouble pitching efficiently and well.  Let’s hope he can compete like a #5 starter and keep the Rockies in the game.  Colorado is desperately looking to stop their own slide and gain some momentum before the Dodgers come to town with Ryu, Greinke, and Kershaw attacking us.

Pacheco DFA – McHenry recalled.
Cargo DL’d – Ryan Wheeler recalled (Wheeler needs to play just about everyday – there’s some pop in that bat).
Butler coming Friday.

The Pacheco/Henry switch signals to me a bit less playing time for Rosario. McHenry is more of a legitimate pure backup catcher that can play (reasonably well) twice a week. I thought Pacheco’s appeal the last couple of years was basically his extreme versatility. But since we now have 6-7 OFer’s and several backup IFer’s his versatility isn’t so attractive (to this team). He’ll get picked up. Shake-ups are good every now and then. I’d like to see Gray called… Read more »

I had called CarGo on the DL and Wheeler being called up. I completely didn’t see Pacheco being DFAd. He must be out of options, and it clears the 40 man roster spot for Butler. I guess the team values Scahill more than Pacheco. I don’t understand how he could hit something like .309 in 2012 and be DFAd less than two years later. I wonder who the next catcher is in the pecking order if either McHenry or Rosario… Read more »

This morning I suggested (again) that Brothers be sent down. If the Rockies don’t do it, we should chip in for a bus ticket.

WTF is up with love affair between WW and Brothers? Both KOA and ROOT guys said back when Lyles was pulled the we shouldn’t expect to see Red because he threw so many pitches last night. So….

I’m a dirty pictures guy. If somebody plays who shouldn’t be playing I think the only reason he’s playing is that he has dirty pictures of the manager. Brothers must have dirty pictures of Weiss. Seriously is the job too much for Walt? He keeps putting in Logan and Brothers and they keep giving up runs. He falls back on the lefties against lefties but it’s not working and this is 2014 not 2013 and Brothers was great last year… Read more »
