CarGo in the Gold Glove Mix

Those that follow the Rockies closely will point out that CarGo has dialed his diving ways back quite a bit, either to curb his injury potential or maybe because it wouldn’t seem right going all out in a hopeless season.  No matter the reason, he is still considered one of the best with the leather on the field at any given time and thankfully he is being recognized as such.

Last years change of the rules from recognizing the outfielder, regardless of position, to the specific position left CarGo out of the running because he played each position almost equally.  This season he was almost entirely rooted to left and has been rewarded with his second GG nomination.

It will be steep competition with Braun and Prado in the mix, but it would give a little bit of joy to the fans that stuck with the team, thick or thin, through the horrible season that was 2012.

In my opinion, this team doesn’t deserve any personal accolades.

Braun and Prado are excellent bats but as Gold Glover competition? Sorry but that is a slam dunk for Cargo if that is his only competition.

Ever since Dave Concepcion won the Gold Glove over Larry Bowa the year Bowa broke the major league records for fewest errors and fielding percentage, I have often called it the Gold Batting Glove Award. Concepcion was a great player and fielder, but he certainly did not show as good as or better defense than Bowa in certain seasons. Yet he won the GG every time. This is an award that should never be influenced by offensive production (there are… Read more »

Probably didn’t help that Bowa is a jerk…

I don’t think at the time he was considered a jerk. Feisty, yes, but not a jerk. Certainly loved by Phils fans at the time.

I agree, this award would not be deserved IMO. Cargo was very subdued in the OF this year. Anyone remember when I was talking about how left handers should play in left and right handers should play in right because of their gloves being on the foulline side to allow for more catches? During the WS there was a catch in foul territory that Gregor Blanco made that a right hander wouldn’t have dreamt of catching. Did anyone see that?… Read more »

I agree with all who don’t think CarGo earned a GG. He didn’t exhibit a whole lot of hustle at the position. More than once this resulted in singles being stretched into doubles by opponents. I well understand his injury problems. To me, he was just coasting last season.

Not to worry. If the UZR weighs heavily then he will not win. Ironic though that Martin Prado is a finalist. Many on here wanted him to be our next 2nd basemen. My money is on the Braves moving him to 3rd.

Ok, my bad. Dr. Rockies has shown me the error in my thinking. Gonzalez absolutely could win.

And CarGo wins it! That’s pretty cool even in a terrible season.

Dr. Rockies, I concede to your infinite wisdom, logic, and reasoning for All Star selections. wow

This is a fan site or a hate fest? Pretty wild to have “fans” complaining about a player on your team not deserving an award which in the end is pretty arbitrary. It’s just hating on the team. I think it might be time some of you adopt a new team??? I went to every game. Yes, you can see the team has asked Cargo to slow it down a bit so he can last an entire season. We need… Read more »

Don’t worry elrodvt, the Rockies are doing a fine job driving away fans as you requested on their own. Soon you’ll have the stadium to yourself and you can continue to applaud the hustle from April to May when it matters.

The Rockies aren’t alone in driving away fans, MLB as a whole is doing a great job as well. I just read where the recently completed WS had the worst TV rating in history. Fans just don’t care anymore. Baseball isn’t attracting any more new fans. There’s a whole new generation that could care less about baseball. The problem is there is no leadership in the upper management of baseball. If there was, the commish can dictate to these money… Read more »

I understand you’re bitter and it was really tough for me sitting through this year. Nor do I have blinders on regarding short comings in the front office. I agree it would be nice if the financials were open so we could validate your statement about money grubbing. I’m not sure about that one. Seems to me the payroll pretty well reflects the market but the point is that it’s anyone’s guess. If I remember right this is something that… Read more »

elrodvt, With all due respect, I’m not bitter at all, I’m just like the legions of fans that have seen the light and refuse to support this management team. Notice I said “support this management team”. I still support the team and will continue to be a fan, but I’ll be damned if I give away another nickel of my hard earned money to the Monfarts until they prove they are willing to make changes and field a competitive team.… Read more »

Cisco, I’m curious, what would make you spend your nickles? Does the team need to be above 500? Fire the GM? What specifically??? I think it might be a while before you can tolerate going to a game but don’t worry the rest of us will provide enough revenue to keep a team in town. Did you get season tickets when the team was hot? Why would you call me blindly loyal because I love baseball, bought season tickets, and… Read more »

JD, Do you truly believe what we’re seeing with the Rockies constitutes as “housecleaning” just because Dac and Tracy are gone? What this is the skipper of the Titanic rearranging the deck chairs. Housecleaning means getting rid entirely of the people that have been around for over 10 years and have created the stench coming from 20th & Blake. That not only includes BIB DOD, Geivett, but also their scouting director (Schmitt) who’s been partly responsible for the lousy drafts… Read more »

With Dick Monfort holding the broom this is as close to housecleaning as you will get. As we’ve seen year after year, he is loyal to a fault. Great if you work for him, bad if you root for his team. So, yes, i believe that the moves made are more housecleaning than rearranging deck chairs in his mind and all we are likely to get. I don’t believe any of this would have happened (DOD “demoted”, Tracy “quitting”, Lansford… Read more »

I guess we’ll just wage a two-front assault hoping to affect change. Some of us will “pound our keyboards” and some of us will refuse to support the Monfarts with our hard earned money. If the end result is we end up with a competitive team year in, year out (even if the same management team is in place) than that will make me happy. I won’t care who takes the credit for making it happen. I’m willing to give… Read more »

amen my friend…here’s hoping for a parade, or at the very least another world series ticket fiasco! If we have one of those that means we made it all the way…i had 10 people online for me trying to get me one stinking pair of tickets during that – talk about stress and anger over a bad situation!

Elrodvt, My comment about questioning your sanity was more tongue in cheek than mean- spirited. So if you were offended by it, please accept my apology. On the other topics I guess we’ll agree to disagree and I’m glad you’re here with your comments. Lastly, as far as not financially supporting the team, if you read the comments on this site, the DP, and other cyberspace sites this position is not the minority. I truly believe that if the team… Read more »

Wordsssssssss!!!!!!!!! Aagh! I don’t necessarily blame people for going to games or for not going to games, for me, the team needs to be competitive. My happiness at games isn’t dependent on them winning, but I’d like them to be in the game. They should win “half” of those games. In 2011 I went to about 12 games and I believe they won 3, MAYBE 4. That’s not acceptable at home. Its especially not acceptable when in many of those… Read more »

Don’t forget these gold glove awards tend to cover the persons body of work (reputation). I do think he was the best LF I saw this year but I don’t watch the AL much. In any case, it wasn’t a travesty as I’ve seen many other years and I’m happy for the kid. Sure he showed some unhappiness on the field. How could he not during that miserable season. Can you imagine being a fielder day after day with that… Read more »

Part of the AAA is explainable due to injuries, but the lineups in 2011 particularly on Sundays didn’t have that same excuse on many occasions. Regarding not spending money and having no say in the matter. I think most businesses would disagree. Most business want to understand why people aren’t spending their money and address it….they successful ones anyway. I guess there are some businesses including the Rockies that take their customers and potential customers for granted or some how… Read more »

I’ve had pause to question the sanity of just about everyone on this site, including my own,at one time or another. For all the times we’ve been “jobbed”out of awards[Helton ROY etc.],I’m glad Cargo won, especially as he should have won last year.Yet as one of the often vocal “off with their heads”crowd,I agree with Prog and others that this was not Cargo’s finest hour after the all star break. If I ever had the money to attend all home games I’d be there… Read more »

Cisco, are you saying you have an example of fans boycotting a major league team and causing change in their mgt team?

I also hope you remember the number of teams that have run themselves down then just moved to a new city and park built by tax payers. repeat… Like that scumbag in FL Loria who ruined the Expos. I was with the Expos when he slowly sucked them dry and this is NOTHING like that.

The Monfarts aren’t sucking this team for all they can get as well? This region, unlike Montreal and more recently Tampa, has proven it will support MLB to the tune of 2.5+ million a year. I doubt the Rockies are going anywhere and I doubt MLB will allow the situation to deteriorate too badly before they step in. They just did that in LA when that situation became intolerable and demanded McCourt sell the team. The tired old “if you… Read more »

Cisco, let’s talk facts: Operating income by team (Rockies #16): http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=126 Payroll by team (Rockies #19) : http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/05/2013-payroll-commitments.html Seems pretty proportional to what other owners are doing. Now perhaps you just hate all baseball owners which is fine. But could you clarify how you quantify they are “sucking the team all they can”? Again, I personally saw how you do that if you’re a clever, scumbag, owner and this ain’t it. Of course they’re making money, why else own a… Read more »
