Carlos Gonzales has been picked to represent the National League in this years Home Run Derby. Matt Kemp, the team leader and person in charge of selection, extended the invitation to CarGo last night through the players association representative.
When CarGo was asked, it was a short conversation:
Question: “Are you interested?” Answer: “Heck, yeah!”
CarGo has decided he wants bench coach Tom Runnells to pitch to him for the derby:
He throws great BP, and I think it would mean a lot to have TR there representing the Rockies.
When asked about the Derby from the Post, he gave away his strategy without a second thought:
“I am going to swing hard for the streets…I am excited to get out there.
YES, YES, YES…I’m more excited about this then the rest of the season for the team 🙂
Quote from Ken Rosenthal’s latest column on Fox Sports:
“The last thing the pathetic Rockies deserve is two All-Stars, but right-hander Matt Belisle merits special mention.”
Please tell us how you really feel about the Rockies Ken.
Cisco? What other adjective would you use to describe? I would think that any truthful description of them would be negative. Of course Charlie Montfort thinks we still have a chance to get in the playoffs. As much chance as Labron James has to be named mayor of Cleveland.
Pathetic is quite an accurate adjective to describe this entire organization.
The worst part about this season? That the excellent group of fans on RWO have pretty much quit looking for anything good from the team and when something does come along it is just another reason to pile on the insults towards the team. I am not blameless, just a bit sad that amazing news like CarGo making the All-Star Team based on player vote AND being chosen for the Derby are met either with silence (not a single comment… Read more »
Jaredean, I’m sure you’re not, but the die-hard fans cannot be blamed for the apathy that you refer to above. You know that at the beginning of the season I was one of the more positive posters on this site. Just go back and review some of the good-natured exchanges I would engage with Agbayani. The Rockies organization has just worn me out. Until some house cleaning happens at 20th & Blake, I’ll refuse to financially support this organization. Sure,… Read more »
Yeah, Cisco, I was the gloom and doom guy in the offseason. Looks like we’re all in the same camp now. Actually, I thought this team should compete but I was annoyed that O’Dowd seemed to be focusing on the wrong things. I was right about focusing on the wrong things, but wrong about this team being at all competitive. Weird thing is that I haven’t lost interest. I’ve said before that I like watching young guys play. If they… Read more »
I follow the Rockies to de-stress from my job, but this year the Rockies are just like my job. Management blunders along with their stupid theories that do not work and the employees (players & fans) have to put up with it. I’m with Cisco – I refuse to financially support this clown show. On a different topic, has anyone else picked up on this? Awhile back Jack & Jerry were talking smack about Esmil Rogers, and the next day… Read more »
I believe that the apathy is because the Monfort’s have made it clear that they have no intention of making any attempt to rectify the huge problems with management. There is more than enough talent on this team to be an above .500 team. You have a manager who has no respect for the fans, and keeps saying that the fans have to understand. It is this current group of management who have fostered the idea that playing at altitude… Read more »
Yep. Can’t even throw out some provocative subject to debate + get any responses.
Jare, I’m quiet in self-defense. Distancing mechanism. I’ve cried my last tear over this team, and I’ve shed a few in the past….Also it’s summer and maybe folks are out having FUN 🙂
Yeah, Cisco, I don’t blame you at all and I have taken a big part in pointing out the teams downfalls myself. I, like you, started the season an “eternal optimist” and held out longer than many trying to defend some of the brain-dead decisions… I’m not saying that people shouldn’t be upset, voice that, etc. All i was doing was lamenting that the poor play/managing/ownership choices have permeated every aspect of the game for each of us and it… Read more »
Plus I, like you, am PSYCHED to see Cargo in the Derby! I hope he wins so we get one freakin highlight for the season!
I KNOW! And i don’t know that it will mess up his swing for the rest of the season, but at this point i’d take him winning the HRD and laying out to make the ASG highlight reel and then walking off for the NL, even if it meant he’d be average going the rest of the season…i want the rest of the world to see the CarGo we know and love…he has slowed down in the outfield this season,… Read more »
In my opinion, Cargo deserves his All-Star berth. He is one of the top players/outfielders in baseball and will do a fine job of representing the local team.
That being said, I was concerned when I saw that he will be participating in the Home Run Derby. To me, that event has the potential to change a hitter’s mindset, and it could impact his approach at the plate going forward in this lackluster season.
Steve I would have agreed with you if Cargo had gotten into the HR Derby a few years ago. But I think he’s a much more mature player in the past couple of years. Lots of guys have been in the HR Derby and have continued to hit well. A few years ago he may have been too immature.
I too was worried about how the HRD would affect CarGo’s swing. Bill is right though, he is a more mature player and unless he can aquire a sixth tool and become a great pitcher who can throw shutouts w/ 75 pitches, this season is doomed anyway. So GOOOOOO CarGo! Put on a show! On another note, I can’t agree more with the Post today. I love the Toddfather and appreciate all of his great years here. However, it’s obvious… Read more »
