Cargo, Ramon on WBC Roster

While the news of WBC rosters was supposed to center around Tulo’s inclusion, it looks like the major Rockies names playing will be Carlos Gonzales and Ramon Hernandez.  Cargo and Hernandez have been selected for team Venezuela’s roster in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, while Tulowitzki’s name was missing from the Team USA’s preliminary roster.

The problem with Tulo is the question mark on his health.  Apparently the WBC would have to insure his $140 million contract if he were to play, according to Renck, and that is something they are balking at right now.  Renck believes there might still be a glimmer of hope that he could be added later, but it seems pretty unlikely.

The Rockies do have one other connection to the WBC.  Australian outfielder David Kandilas, who played last season with Class A Asheville, is on the Australian roster.

Here is the complete USA WBC Preliminary Roster:

So very proud that our son is representing his country in the WBC and of course the Rockies. Not sure but I think he might be the first Rockies minor league player to do so (?)

Martin, welcome, and congratulations to David. If you don’t mind, I’d be interested in hearing about baseball in Australia. We’ve seen a number of pretty skilled players over the last couple decades, so obviously it has caught on at least as a niche sport. How did David start playing?

Manny Corpas played for Panama in the first WBC when he was still a single A player.

Congrats to David for being included on the Australian roster.

Thanks for the information on Manny Corpas. I just also found out that Aussie LHP Adam Bright AA Tulsa Drillers played in the 2009 WBC. He is also on the Australia WBC team 2013. Bright has since been released by the Rockies
