CarGo to NY? Fugget About It

You can’t blame the NY Posts’ Joel Sherman and his pipe dream of getting the Rockies to trade Gonzalez to the Yankees.  Shoot, we are constantly dreaming on this site about getting amazing players to come to Coors for no other reason than because we want them.  The difference is, he seems to want the world to take him serious, all the while using our demise as the catalyst.

Oh, and the fact that the Rockies “are again a poor team” means that we don’t “have the kind of market in which [we] can afford to have two [superstar] players“.

Really?  Our little old podunk of a town shouldn’t be allowed to have TWO great players, but because you live in the, shucks, the “Big City”, you can load up every position on the field with the cream of the crop?

Gee, didn’t realize it wasn’t polite to have two superstars when we stink so bad.

One of Sherman’s arguments to support his cause, that the Rockies can’t “afford” two superstars?

The model of allocating a lot to a few has worked terribly in Rockies history. They had the failed tandem signings of Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle early this century…

Seriously?  THAT is your argument???

You are comparing two of the best players in the MLB, two players who have spent either all or most of their careers playing for the Rockies, you dare compare them to two pitchers who had some glory BEFORE Coors and couldn’t hack the humidorless air after the ink was barely dry on their epic jokes of a contract?

Wow, great argument.

If CarGo was to be traded this early in his contract, it wouldn’t be because the team couldn’t afford two superstars.  This is the same team that is 22nd in total payroll ($78M) while 12th in total attendance (over 3M in 2011).  If there are money problems, it isn’t because of the “big contracts” for Tulo and Cargo.  By Sherman’s own admission, CarGo’s contract is “a severe underpay considering his skills.”

No, the money issue is in paying so much for Guthrie, a high contact fly ball pitcher, and overpaying for Cuddyer.  Don’t get me wrong, Cuddyer is playing well, but if there were any reason to think we couldn’t “afford” two “superstar” players it would be that we are giving $10M to Cuddyer this season and CarGo is only getting $5M.

The truth however is that the Rockies have failed miserably to date while attempting to build a respectable MLB club around the two super stars. When will the responsible parties ever “own” up to this and make some serious changes to what is happening?

Failing to build around them isn’t the issue I have with the article, that is a big issue i have with the team and i agree that the team has failed miserably in that aspect… What i have issue with is the whole “entitlement” as Colorado Thistle said, that we can’t have two superstars on our team cause we are a little market and we should give our superstar to them for a bunch of wanna be’s… ANY team would… Read more »

ok just for fun would you (as the Rockies GM) trade Tulo straight up for Felix Hernandez with the Yankess sending a bunch of their MILB system (to get Tulo from Seattle) in a three way trade?

It would be very tempting from the Rockies perspective, but still not sure that I (as the Rockies GM) could pull the trigger on a deal structured similar to that?

This is typical NY press BS. One reason I hate Yankees’ fans is that they have this overblown sense of entitlement. They think all the best players should end up in their pinstripes. The fans were blown away that Cliff Lee didn’t choose to go there, they simply couldn’t understand why. Cargo shouldn’t go anywhere.

HAHA! Boy, that Sherman can sure write a good joke! It’s the only smile I’ve had concerning the Rox in weeks

I mentioned at MLBtraderumors, I think Tulo is the more likely player moved. Not that I think either of them will be, but if I had to choose 1, I think Tulo goes first. Cargo, is an enigma right now. Why are his splits so bad? Its not like he’s a fly ball hitter who gets lucky on what should be outs. His swing is immaculate. His HRs at Coors are HRs anywhere. But why isn’t he swinging the same… Read more »

Interesting you mention Tulo Prog. I happen to agree with you. And where is Tulo? Last I heard he flew to Philly a few days ago to see a specialist. Is he done for this season? Is this nagging problem he has more than just “nagging”?

I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if DoD trades Tulo and/or Cargo for a bunch of middle of the road prospects. He’ll then say, we’ve decided to go in a different direction.

Not sure why everybody is ticked off at a NY columnist. Get ticked off at the Rockies ownership, management and players.

Hi Guys, I have not been commenting much this year, I try to have a bright outlook on life. Danny Boy is just beyond terrible and long with everybody else, scouts, managers, whatever up and down the line. Each time you think this is it, this is the bottom of the barrel something else (4 man rotation) happens. I think the only way to salvage baseball as we know and love it here in Colorado is for the Monforts to… Read more »

Jaredean, I kind of understand where you are coming from. But to me, what’s the difference what somebody else thinks? For years there has been this inferiority complex with Denver fans that people think we’re a cow-town. So what does it matter what somebody that we don’t respect thinks? One of the best things about Denver is that it’s not NY or LA or Chicago. And yes all those cities and others have their good points. But I choose to… Read more »
