Chance to Split the Fish

The Rockies have a chance to split the series with the Marlins today and show that Nicasio might be on to something as he tries to notch his third straight W.

The lineup is a bit different, not only with the day game, but perhaps to give Tulo some time to make sure his ribs are completely healed, Johnny “rally monkey black bean sparkplug” Herrera is starting at short.

1. Dexter Fowler (S) CF
2. DJ LeMahieu (R) 2B
3. Carlos Gonzalez (L) LF
4. Michael Cuddyer (R) 1B
5. Wilin Rosario (R) C
6. Charlie Blackmon (L) RF
7. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
8. Jonathan Herrera (S) SS
9. Juan Nicasio (R) P

Just read this on ‘the Rockies lost offense’ — very creative!

Near end of the delay… Putting KOA back on soon. Just had to say Way to go, Juan!! That’s the pitcher we thought/hoped was hiding in there!!

So if you don’t pull out your starters EVERY FUCKING GAME in the 7th inning you might not have had to resort to tossing losers like Wilton Lopez in the 9th inning of a tight game. DLR could have pitched to the 8th easily yesterday and save Belilse for tonight.

I’m glad I forgot to turn the game back on. Just looked at the box score. Was Lopez as bad as it looks? He was DoD’s big off-season pickup. Really helps! And Prog, I’m with you. I’ve been complaining for most of the season about them pulling the starters early. Of course after the game last night Weiss said that DLR had hurt his finger again. Another friggen excuse, which is all these guys seem to be good at. Become… Read more »

I know the game wasn’t on Root but maybe somebody saw a Marlins feed or was at the game and can comment. According to Renck “Rosario inexplicably tried to backhand” Ottovino’s wild pitch. If that’s true and if he had stopped the wild pitch, we may have gone into the 9th tied zip-zip and Brothers may have been pitching instead of Lopez. Lots of ifs. It’s still my contention that Rosario is NOT a catcher. IMO he should be groomed… Read more »

Bill, with all due respect and friendly interaction… If Willin can’t catch the ball behind the plate while wrapped in armor, what makes you think he can catch a ball at 1B with the sun in his eyes and a couple of magicians with the glove on the left side of the IF, and arms that will launch a throw that may or may not be catchable? Big fan of Willin. Big fan of the left side of the IF.… Read more »

Lots of anger today, I think pretty much rightly so. Suggestions for improvement many having to do with changing players. The issue is as I see it Management and Ownership. No matter what happens with what we have now improvement will not happen without a complete change of management and ownership. If they sell, they won’t buy right. They have a very solid group of players at the moment, some needing to play as much as possible, some needing to… Read more »

We just got beat 3 of 4 by a team with some very good young starting pitchers. How did the Marlins happen to acquire such young talented pitching? –Jacob Turner: acquired from Detroit for Anibal Sanchez (before he became a free agent and would’ve been gone anyway) and Omar Infante (same) –Nathan Eovaldi: acquired from the Dodgers for Hanley Ramirez, an overpaid SS past his prime –Jose Fernandez: 14th overall pick in 2011 And Tom Koehler, your typical replacement-level 5th… Read more »

Ag… the only thing that tells the tale is… how many WS have the Marlins won and how many have the Rockies won? Despite the record, they are better than we are right now. With Winky, Blinky and Clyde. Whoever they are.

We were born at the same time.

What is the constant?

Rockies ownership.

IggyRox out.

Having just gone on and on with my “big picture” take, let me say a couple things about the small picture. 1. Before the series I said “if Weiss lets Stanton beat us he should be fired.” Guess what? When it was 1-0 (top 8 or 9; I can’t recall) the Marlins leadoff guy legged out a double. Stanton up. First base empty. They pitch to Stanton! 2-0 lead. And it was all downhill from there. 2. Conventional wisdom says… Read more »

This is the warm and fuzzy blast from the season to make us forget last year. Never was any hope for this year, just the hope that we Rockie-lovers would come back for bobbleheads, Walt, Dante and the Rockies version of Ringo’s All Starr Band. They are still in spitting distance because the division is a joke… until LAD takes over on sheer salary alone. Dodgers might win the NLW by 7 or more. Damn. I can’t stand the Dodgers.… Read more »

Agbayani, I think that you’re right about what we should do. We’re unlikely to have a miracle comeback this year, so let’s trade the players whose contracts run out this year or next and get good prospects in return. We have some players (Cuddyer, DLR, Torrealba) who could get us very good prospects in trade. (If Betancourt is on the DL on the trading deadline, can we trade him?). Do we dare trade CarGo? If we trade players having career… Read more »

Off topic, but check out Bettis’s box score in Tulsa tonight. He’s looking like a prospect again.

Agbayani, I totally agree with you that Rox should have some guts to make moves to upgrade the farm system. I really like your trade ideas (Betancourt, JDLR). Walt Weiss is blinded by the smoked and mirrored Lopez. He got all excited about inducing Stanton’s ground out to end the bases jammed inning Wednesday night and ran him back out in a one-run game Thursday. Just as well the timing is perfect for me to get out of town to… Read more »

Just saw the replay of the wild pitch that cost us the run in the 8th. Rosario never got in front of it. I know IggyRox and others might disagree but Rosario is not a catcher. And there is a reason why for 100+ years teams have put their worst fielder, but good hitter, at a corner infield or outfield position. We’re not in the AL so he can’t be a full-time DH but he will do less damage at 1B… Read more »

Here’s the solution, Bill. Petition MLB to move to the AL, and we can move Willin to the DH role, ride Yorvit another year or two, obtain (or call up) a decent defensive catcher (or let Pacheco play) and build around it. While I prefer the NL brand of baseball, I have always thought that this town was more suited for an AL team. More offense, higher ERA’s and a place to stash a big bat who can’t cut it… Read more »

Ag,I usually agree with you,and in this case I don’t disagree in that your premise is sound. However,in reality we pitched just as well as they did other than tail end of the bull pen.We really need more offense and trading Cuddyer subtracts our most reliable offensive player.DLR and Betencourt make sense but the appendix deal probably make Raffy a winter trade piece[if BIB even bothers to make one.].DLR makes sense to Atlanta or whom ever has a legit 1st base… Read more »

I swear we’ve had this same basic discussion for two/three years now. There will be no significant trades ladies and gentlemen, and the Todd Father will be back again next year, signing a two year extension. Winning for the Rox ownership and management is not a priority, period. And why should they? The fans (used to denote fannies and not fanatics) have proven its not a priority with them either. What pisses me off is that I can’t quit caring.

The only problem with the (sound) strategy of trading players with value is that we still have the same half-assed management making the trades. Why would we think they’ll do a good job this time around since we have no evidence that they have the ability, and more than ample evidence that they have poor skills at building a club?

Remember when the Rox were said to have gotten the better end of the Ubaldo deal? Even if DOD pulls off a decent trade, the players get ruined when they start playing for the Rox.

Batcat, here’s a rare occasion where I’ll defend DOD. I think when he’s given the go ahead to wheel and deal, or when he’s forced to wheel and deal based on cost concerns mandated by ownership (Holliday) he’s done fine. Remember, Holliday got us Cargo, who is not Matt’s equal but who obviously was a talented/cost-controlled excellent replacement. DOD got the go ahead to move Ubaldo and made his best deal, which I hated at the time saying it would… Read more »
