Cook, Matzek & Gagnon – Oh My!

Just scanned the minor league box scores from last night and the Sky Sox, Cook and Scahill all get lit up in a snow shortened five inning game in Colorado Springs. Cook’s ERA is over 20 (is that even possible?), Dickerson goes deep but this one was really ugly!

Meanwhile Matzek begins 2013 in Tulsa with his typical line fo 4 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts. We probably do not need to read the details to know that his control is still an issue. Matthes and Parker both hit homers so that was good.

Nice game for the Nuts winning a close one with Gagnon pitching pretty well with Modesto down at the high A ball level.

I was one person that thought signing Cook was a waste of time. It’s obvious he won’t help the big league club this season, so why have him around to take up a roster spot on the CS rotation that can be utilized by another pitcher that may be able to help in the future.

My suggestion is to send Volstad down and put him in the rotation and bring Outman up.

Thanks for the summary, Orange. We’re reaching that dreaded decision point with Matzek. Time to see if he can simplify things and get his act together as a reliever? That’s usually the fate of lefties who habitually put up high pitch count lines like that. Cisco, I’d agree with you about Cook if he was blocking someone … but who would that be? Obviously not Matzek, not Tyler Anderson (already skipping a level), not Bettis (still trying to show he’s… Read more »

Christian Bergman had a great season last year at Modesto and a great first game at Tulsa. And yet he gets no mention. What are the expectations for him?

Ag, can’t totally disagree with you as to who could replace Cook in the CS rotation, but anyone under 30 (Volstad??) would be just as good.

BTW, Tyler Anderson hasn’t skipped a level,. He’s starting out in Modesto.

You mentioned Cabrera, what exactly is wrong with his arm that he was placed on the 60-day DL?

I got the impression that Cabrera was switched to the 60 day DL to specifically open a 40 man roster spot for Brignac.

I know I mentioned it during chat last night but has anyone noticed the Rockies have signed Mr. O’Dowd’s son?

He was released by the Padres in March and has now been signed by the Rockies.

Cook wasn’t nearly as bad as it sounds. First inning, he gave up a single, but the runner was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Then a ground out and a fly out to end the inning. Three ground outs in the second. Then the front started to move in and the wind started blowing out and Cook got lit up — six runs in 2/3 of an inning. Not all of the fiasco can be blamed… Read more »

Cisco, thanks for pointing out the Tyler Anderson to Modesto thing. I’m not sure what they’re doing with him. He carved up Low A hitters very nicely last year, but that didn’t prove anything given how old he was for the Sally league. So while I’ve accused the Rockies of rushing other guys, I don’t think there’s any rushing involved in assigning a 23 year old to high A ball. And again, it’s not like anyone’s blocking his advancement.

Trevor Story: 11 strikeouts in 18 at bats in Modesto. Ouch!

Big think about stats from COS lat night, the wind was at 48mph gusting, the worst since a game here years ago before the move to current stadium with double figure homers. Matzek is still in progress. U have to hope the control comes and soon…because he has great stuff. Still hoping.
