He may not have won the Home Run Derby, or even made it to the final round, but Michael Cuddyer made his fans proud while shutting-up the naysayers as he took third with 15 homeruns combined between the first and second round.
The outrage that Cuddyer would be chosen for the Home Run Derby was heard from not only the mainstream media, but many fans nationwide. People questioned Cuddyer and Harper as choices by David Wright, but Cuddyer and Harper went further than everybody but Cespedes, who won the whole thing.
Cuddyer even beat Pedro Alvarez who was brought into replace Carlos Gonzalez. Alvarez was one of the players fans were screaming for ahead of Cuddyer, and Alvarez exited the first round without much of a whimper.
It would seem to me the reason Cuddyer does not hit a lot of tape measure home runs is that he is a lne drive hitter. I love watching him play with his max effort all the time.
Jeem,Cuddy’s making the ASG makes him “bigger money”Cuddyer in future write ups.Bonus plus some sort of escalator clause that kicks in next year!
So now whe have Cargo, Tulo, and BigMo?
I still like plain old Money. And not cuz of the original theme on RWO (overpaid, serious/joking, whatever) BUT because that’s what he is. Money.
Maybe it’s because I’m old but watching the home-run derby is about as exciting as watching paint dry.
I totally agree that it isn’t very exciting, though I like it probably a bit more than you. I was just excited that two of the eight hitters were from the Rockies, even though Cargo had to pull out. What I think is that you and I aren’t alone, because if you watch the last round nobody was cheering. Everybody was really bored, and the place emptied out as soon as possible because when they handed out the trophy it… Read more »
The winner yesterday was somebody who isn’t even an All-Star, at least I don’t think so. And the rules are so convoluted that a few years back when Josh Hamilton clearly was the star and hit a million homers his totals were wiped out and he wasn’t the winner. I basically stopped watching after that. I had it on but with sound turned down and caught up on other stuff.
I think it could be fixed, but as is its really boring. Chris Berman makes it absolutely unwatchable. As a kid, I loved the old Home Run Derby show with guys like Killebrew, Aaron and Mantle and those guys. It needs serious editing like a tv show. Unfortunately because its held in front of the huge crowd there is no way anyone would watch it on delay because the results would already be out there. Here’s what I woud do… Read more »
Prog, I this was you are referring to? I forgot all about this (I wasn’t around to see it when it happened but caught it a long time ago somewhere). I LOVE the simplicity and the fact that the other player is doing analysis!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbS47sXKaoA I grew up loving the MLB homerun derby but its too much of a show and too long (like what the NBA dunk contest has become, it was awesome, now I don’t watch it at… Read more »
Thats it. IIRC they used to play it on ESPN back in the late 80s early 90s which is where I knew it.
Nice laid back. Obviously it can’t be that simple during live taping, but I don’t think it needs to be a circus like it is currently.
Love your suggestions, Prog. I would add a limit to pitches “taken.”
My youtube feed died. Maybe all the Rockies Fans are watching it. If I remember correctly I think it was taped (and aired?) in the middle of winter. Took place in southern California I believe. Probably was more interesting then because these really were stars hitting. And there weren’t 50 games on a week. Watching a sporting event on TV was an occurrence. Most ESPN even†s are over the top and when Berman is involved it’s even more so. Frankly… Read more »
DrewPo pitching line last night at Tulsa:
5.2 IP, 10H, 7R
Team isn’t serious about having him come back up on Tuesday to make another start are they? Kid is a mess right now. He is the epitome of what happens to a young pitcher when he is rushed to the majors.
Its possible this kid lacks what it takes to be a big leaguer and will never have it. While they may have rushed him in 2011, its 1.5 years later now. I don’t think we should use that excuse any longer.
They should make him actually earn his way back up. Not come back because of his potential. Look at Kyle Parker, the ’10 #1, he’s hitting .275 w/14 hr in Tulsa and they’ve let him go level to level. Based on his #s, and they’re nothing overwhelming, his been the same kinda player all the way to Tulsa. Somewhere along the line the light either comes on and he wakes up to his talent or he’s just a lifer minor… Read more »
Some players take far longer to mature than others. The Rockies of all teams shouldn’t give up on a left-hander with a live arm and talent. It may take him a year or more to make it. And of course he may never make it. But giving up on pitching prospect so early is just plain stupid. Oops, we’re talking the Rockies front office here. Two players of note who took a long time to make it. One is Dominic… Read more »
For those who missed it yesterday, the Rox won the first pick in the competitive balance draft. What this means is that they will have the 32nd pick in the draft of 2014 as well as their normal 1st round pick. The competitive balance pick comes between the 1st & second round. In this year’s draft the team had a pick between the 2nd & 3rd round. One of the new things in the recent CBA is that the draft… Read more »
No. They are never aggressive during the trade period. I for one am OK with that THIS year and agree with Dave Krieger; he said last week that this is not the year to mortgage the farm for a renta-pitcher or whatever. They are not good enough to think that’s a difference maker THIS year. (And who is out there that’s worthy of acquisition, all of the fans screaming Make a Deal? Not necessarily RWO but lots of fans want… Read more »
The problem that the Rockies will have is that with another high draft choice they will have to spend money to sign him. The team is on a limited budget because that’s what ownership wants.
I don’t know how to start a thread so am just leaving my comments here before heading for bed. I just read (via Denver Post online) the Rockies rotation to restart the season. De La Rosa, Nicasio, Chatwood, Pomeranz and Chacin. What is Walt (or more like Geivett/DoD smoking? Why the hell do you put your best starter 5th? I would rank them this way.. Chacin, DLR, Chatwood (really close to 2nd), Nicasio and Pomeranz. Actually Drew should be about… Read more »
I’ve wondered for a few years if management is insane and now there is no doubt.
Could it be a match up situation?
I think they are “sandwiching” Nicasio and Drew Pom between guys that can eat more innings to save some bullpen wear. If you pitch JN and DP on back to back days, you’re bullpen may have to pitch 8-10 innings. I kind of like it.
This am Kizla at the DP says its “my idea” to trade for a bat instead of pitching! No respect for RWO. What IS his idea is to get Utley to play 2nd base. LeMahieu is doing well, that’s not where we need help! Here’s hoping the Rocks brass reads RWO and get either a 1st baseman, or a corner outfielder and move Cuddyer to 1st most days.
Kizla quoted Montfort in saying that we’ve tried to get name pitchers here but it hasn’t worked out. Maybe he should take a look at who is making the decisions on what pitchers to bring. The Best in Baseball
Pitchers will come if you pay them. The Rockies refused to pay Ubaldo who at the time at least projected to be a top pitcher. It was about the money at the time. Stop trying to rewrite history…
“You have to trust the organization….” F’ning liars.
I was thinking, a rather limited activity with me these days, that maybe putting Drew in as a reliever would take some stress off of him, which seems to be a large part of the problem and it would seem that it is anathema to trade him. I could easily see Ottavino moving to a starting position and I think he would respond nicely. Just an idea and since they are so lacking within the “organization” that idea and anything… Read more »
Reports are out that Aaron Cook has decided to hang it up for the season. Dealing with some sort of elbow injury.
