Cuddyer Swats the Dodgers

The Rockies enter the all star break on a good note with a split of a four game series in Los Angeles. Jhoulys Chacin gave them a quality start pitching through a tough six innings with some Gold Glove help behind him. egossage’s star, William, started the game with a double and was brought home on Money’s two-out RBI single for the game’s first run. Colorado added two more runs with one swing by the Home Run Derby participant, Money, after CarGo reached on a hit by pitch. Three runs was enough for a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers.

Pitching and defense finished the job on the Dodgers to gain a split and a game on Arizona in the Wild West. William caught A.J. Ellis’ loud fly ball off the top of the wall to save a XBH. CarGo made several tough running catches in the left field to keep the Dodgers at bay. Chacin went six innings giving up six hits and three walks. Half of the hits were singles in the fifth inning that led to Los Angeles’ only run of the game.

The biggest threat for Chacin came in the sixth inning when Ethier led off with a four-pitch walk which was followed by Ellis’ long drive to the warning track that CarGo reeled in. Scott Van Slyke singled up the middle to put Chacin on his heels with a two on and one out situation. Walt Weiss popped out of the dugout presumably to make a pitching change, only to tell him to finish up the inning. He responded by striking out Jerry Hairston and inducing Dweeb into a deep fly reeled in by William at the warning track.

Rex Brothers was called upon to pitch in the seventh due to the fact that the first two of the three hitters were left-handed. One-two-three. Ditto for Matt Belisle in the eighth inning. His velocity was back up to 92 on fastballs. Ditto for Rafael Betancourt. Game, set, match.

It may not feel like it, but the Rockies did finish a critical 10-game road trip with a 4-6 record. They finish the first half at 46-50, 4.5 games behind Arizona while sitting in third place ahead of the Giants and Padres. The Rockies have a chance to stay in contention well into September with the top three pitchers(Chacin, JDLR, and Chatwood) of the rotation established. On the offensive side, everyone is getting healthy and the lineup is pretty much set except for one weak link – first base. Let’s see if the inept management can land a first baseman to give the men in purple a fighting chance in September and possibly Rocktober. The Rockies start the second half Friday with a ten-game homestand against teams(Cubs, Marlins, Brewers) that have losing records.

I only watched portions of the game as I was napping on the couch but in between my eyes closing I saw both Dex and Cargo make at least a couple of nice plays each. When we have our top players in the lineup it makes the pitchers better also. When Dex was out it seemed that every game one of our center fielders was mishandling a ball out there. And although I still think Cargo should play right field… Read more »

If we can get pitching like the past three games we might have a shot inspite of the bunnies on offence.I can’t remember a better three back to back to back starts in recent memory.

You sure did my friend…I was done in by his injuries at the end…I think if he stayed healthy he would have done a bit better, but I pay my debts so dinner on me! I’ll be in town next week for the Rockies Kids Camp (taking my 8 year old – SO excited!!!) and would love to meet up with you (and anyone else that wants to) at Blake Street Tavern before one of the games (preferably Tuesday or… Read more »

The Rocks have 3 pitchers who performed very well in the first half, and Nicasio could be a 4th. They have 3 position players in the ASG, which might be a record for them. So why are they under .500? The lack of timely and regular hitting by the others? Other than Jonny H, who seems to be timely. Gives support for what they need is to trade for a position player, not pitching. The solutions talked about here on… Read more »

We here at RWO have had the conversation about trading for contributors, but, I never really see trade what for what? So, with the break upon us, we’ve got three days to make this club better. What trades do the Rox need to make? Sorry, get rid of so – and – so for anybody isn’t quite a trade. Tell us who for who and why. And be real. None of this Pomeranz for Wainwright, stuff. Trades that could really… Read more »

Cargo and Pomeranz straight up for Mike Stanton with the caveat that Stanton signs long term.

Somehow I think CarGo has a no-trade clause. What do you think KC would take for Eric Hosmer?

Just reported:
Rox trade Parker Frazier to Reds for Armando Galarraga.

Perhaps now we can stop hearing George give us Parker updates.

Galarraga was the guy whose perfect game was blown on a bad call by the ump. Now that he’s a Rockie he probably won’t be able to throw strikes, let alone no-hitters.

Another reclamation project. That’s been going well for us (Moyer, Garland, Oswalt).

On the other hand, it can’t hurt.

All 3 Rockies in the ASG will start as Cuddyer is the DH! Didn’t even know they had the DH in NL. Kind of makes sense but they would always pinch-hit for the pitcher anyway. Galarraga has spent much of his time in the minors since his near no-hitter and hasn’t been able to throw strikes. So maybe he’ll end up helping the Rockies. Perhaps we can now trade George (Frazier) to the Reds for Marty Brennerman. We can even… Read more »

I’d be all over that trade. Whatever has happened to Dave Campbell? I know he was doing ESPN radio but haven’t paid any attention.

Was Parker Frazier on the 40 man roster? Is this a way of clearing a spot on the 40 man roster?

Parker Frazier was not on the 40 man roster and neither is Galarraga. This does eliminate the Rockies from having to worry about what they would do about Frazier over the off season.

I suspect that he will eventually make some team an acceptable relief pitcher.

I really don’t know what O’Dowd is thinking here, or even if he’s thinking at all. To me it’s pretty obvious: the future is now. Tulo is in his prime (if he can stay on the field), so is Cargo, so is Fowler, Cuddyer won’t be this good but he’s back for another year, the club option on DLR is looking like they might want to exercise it, Chacin has been a solid #2 or 3 type starter, Chatwood is… Read more »

Excellent assessment. I think this team is actually pretty close to first place right now, and despite the prevailing logic, it isn’t pitching holding us back. I can think of 4 games (minimum) where we got a performance like Chatwood gave us on Saturday: more than good enough to win. Take those 4 games and give us a reasonable bat (preferably right handed with power at 1st) and our record is 50 – 46 and we’re right there. Our hitting… Read more »

AG… as usual, brilliant breakdown of options remaining. I’m going with the win now philosophy…not going to use names because I don’t know enough about the minor league rosters…but…use them as chips.!! Let’s keep Butler and Gray to begin with. Go ahead and pull the trigger on a rent-a-stud for the remainder of the year…the hell with the money. Use 6 or 8 of them if need be. Get a RFer or 1B and try to bomb the opposition into… Read more »

What do you guys think of Michael Young right now to man 1st base? Should be relatively affordable prospect wise.

I think that Phillies still aren’t sure they are buyers or sellers. But either way I don’t think you get Michael Young for any of those guys. I agree with all who think we have a chance this year. Not because Rockies are so great but because everybody else also has flaws. Dodgers have the most talent but their best player is hurt again (Kemp). I can’t take the D-Backs seriously although they keep winning (or not losing that much).… Read more »

The SMIB is doing his usual thing, a name his fan base will recognize and will think he’s doing a great job. Results don’t count, just his “effort”. Poor guy is saddled with no money, you know.
