DAN O’DOWD GONE….but not really

Troy Renck is reporting that the team will announce shortly that Dan O’Dowd’s duties will be shifted in focus to more of a minor league/player development manager with Bill Geivett being given more responsibility over the day-to-day duties of the major league club.

The movie is more of a minor shift in that Geivett will still answer to O’Dowd and O’Dowd will still be in charge of player acquisitions. O’Dowd has been spending more time, as of late, with the minor league teams.

Geivett has been the Rockies’ assistant GM since 2000 and was named senior vice president of scouting and development in January 2011.

You know, it seems like, once again, Monfort is afraid to just pull the trigger on a situation that isn’t right. He didn’t go all the way with Dac, instead letting him “step away” and now with O’Dowd it sounds like, if Renck’s right, it is just a “minor demotion”…but, you give the guy the same responsibilities and powers then he is the same guy…

Hey, this is like the GM equivalent of the 75 pitch limit? O’Dowd gets to start and then Geivett piggy backs?

And then when it ends up as a complete failure in the public eye’s they’ll provide some bullshit stats to Renck or Drew Goodman to say how great it is and that the rest of us are just dummies for not seeing past the sub .400 win percentage?

I’m so sick of the non-move moves. Every other owner in Denver is doing things to help improve their teams and give their fans the best product they can. The Monforts do nothing. They fire guys into promotions. They trade dirt for mud. Now they demote a guy that has messed up this franchise but in reality it is not a demotion at all. Everyone in the scouting, front office and coaching staff has to go…and they will…just to another… Read more »

It took me most of last season to get to the point where I wanted and expected J Tracy to be fired. Then like a punch to the gut the announcement comes out that instead of firing Tracy (since his players had basically quit on him two Septembers in a row), the owners had actually extended his contract indefinitely. While I have been somewhat critical of DanO, I still supported him here “until” the trade for Guthrie and the free… Read more »

Clearly this ballclub lacks leadership from the top down. No one is in charge. Clear lines of responsibility have not been established. Instead of making clear decisions, making decisions that appear to be decisions but are not really decisions. Textbook mis-management. This organization is adrift, rudderless, and going nowhere. A sad day for Rockies baseball. The official press release clearly shows nobody knows what is going on in Rockieland. It reminds me of the last days of the Nixon Administration.

I work for an organization that rarely fires anyone, but that frequently “reassigns” top managers into oblivion. So I’ve become pretty good at reading between the lines when such moves are announced. Some thoughts: 1. Round 2 goes to Tracy. Round 1 went to O’Dowd. Ownership clearly let him intrude into game-to-game decision making. Tracy was never on board with the 4 man rotation thing, but it was forced on him. Ownership gave it some time, but there is zero… Read more »

If you are right, the way the team played in the 8th and 9th in tonight’s game, could bode badly for JT’s 50 game tryout.

I haven’t given the Rockies a penny after they failed to make any changes after last season. I guess I won’t be going to any games any time soon either.

I saw the press conference. What a FREAKIN joke. Bill Geivett!?! Are you kidding me??? I have used his name several times since the ITR days as who I see as being a good part of the problem. Player developement … or lack there of. Mr. Monfort. People are not calling for you just to fire someone just to “fire someone”. Fans DO get that you could fire someone and the problem will still persist. What is sad is you… Read more »

The Monferts need a baseball man to take charge as President and get rid of just about everybody in management. Right now we have 2 pitching coaches, a manager who has a front office boss in the next office and a front office GM who is in the clubhouse. And the GM (in name?) will concentrate on minor league development. Tracy, I think, is a half-manager. Geivett is half manager, half GM, DoD is half GM and half minor league… Read more »

From Renck’s article–

Additionally, O’Dowd has plans to add a director of pitching operations, “someone who wakes up and thinks about pitching 24/7.”

HAHAHA! What an eye-roller of a press conference. This is such a joke. I really wish I could sit with the ROOT sports talking heads to really see how they honestly feel about this debacle. I listen to 104.3 the Fan from here in NM and it’s so good to hear these guys just ripping the organization and their incompetence. They even acknowledged that they will not get 1 interview from the Rox due to their critique. Just a poorly… Read more »

Hearing reports that one of DOD’s new responsibilities will include analyzing the effects of altitude-influenced oxygen deprivation on management decisions.

If substantiated, the organization may look to limit decisions on the direction of the team to months that don’t have a “R” in them. Similarly, the franchise will also avoid shellfish in those same months.

LOL, Steve. Oxygen deprivation may explain a lot. Why a little stats knowledge is a dangerous thing — we keep hearing O’Dowd and his minions (including new kind of GM-ey guy Bill Geivett and Jim Tracy yesterday) talk about how pitchers are much less effective the 3rd time through the batting order. This is true. Tracy says that’s why he pulled Francis yesterday and went with … Adam Ottavino. That’s the other side of the equation that needs to be… Read more »

Is lack of oxygen the reason Jim Tracy never pitches around players who already hit a HR in that very game? There have been SEVERAL multiHR games against the Rockies this year.

I think we should stop worrying about oxygen, and instead start pushing for nitrous oxcide available at the concesstion stands.

Speaking of laughing at this pitiful comedy of errors,I want to pat myself on the back for my post last week that the ROX would probably kick DOD upstairs to become president.I almost nailed it–and thank god I didn’t!

Gary, I first heard of the switcheroo on the 6 pm sports news. They used a teaser with DOD’s picture saying there was a ‘shakeup’ in the Rockies organization. I knew it wasn’t a firing based on their statement, so immediately thought of your post. You were very close. Still might happen that way this winter, don’t you think? We should grade management the same way players are. Need some sort of numerical tool. Performance of players traded away vs… Read more »

DoD (or maybe it was Monfert) said that they would have done this even if they were 20 games over .500 but would have waited until the end of the year. Right. And I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell you at a very good price.
