DanO did you forgot about 1st Base!

While doing some statistical research for another article, I came across a couple of interesting baseball facts. The Baltimore Orioles (yes I follow other MLB under dogs as well) were recently bragging (big newspaper article and all) about how they had turned over 12 positions on their 40 man roster since the end of last season. Well Orioles fans you got nothin’ on the Rockies because DanO has found 13 new replacements for those under achieving and bad clubhouse guys that were once the 2011 Colorado Rockies.

Maybe even more interesting however is what you could do with those 13 brand new players. However it seems that DanO must have a back doctor in his back pocket, because 1st base is the only position that he failed to address this off season.

Drum roll please ——– as here are your NEW Colorado Rockies for 2012!

Catcher — Hernandez
1st Base — Player to be obtained later or CuddyerX2 b/c he cost so much!
2nd Base — LeMahieu
Shortstop — Scutaro
Third Base — Blake
Left Field — Hoffman
Center Field — Colvin
Right Field — Cuddyer
SP1 — Guthrie
SP2 — Chatwood
SP3 — Moscoso
SP4 — Outman
SP5 — Schmidt
Closer — Putnam

New year = new team!

Helton either has some dirt on J Tracy or DanO still has one more roster move to make. Although not exactly a dominant MLB squad that’s not a bad starting cast. So DanO you can now feel free to cut those two guys (injury prone anyway) Tulo and Cargo already – oh I almost forgot you still have to pay them for nearly a decade – never mind?

Aren’t Cuddyer and Giambi the backups at 1B? Couldn’t Pacheco play it if necessary? I assume that Paulsen will be the starting 1B at CS, so he could be used in an emergency. So, I think that we are OK at 1B for the moment. (I saw some projection that by 2014 Matthes would be the 1B.) The position I wonder about is catcher. My assumption is that Rosario starts the year in the minor leagues. So, if that’s true,… Read more »

I bet Cuddyer ends up spending most of the time playing first base. Unfortunately it is probably just a matter of time until Helton gets hurt. The Rockies might regret dumping Seth Smith at that point, because this will be one right handed lineup. (unless Wheeler or Blackmon are ready)

I’m hoping the lack of action for a long term 1st basemen is a signal that the team will be willing to go BIG on the free agent market in a few years. Without looking up contract status, someone like Joey Votto would be excellent in 2014.

I REALLY REALLY hope we aren’t in the position of relying on a rookie to step in at that time because hopefully we are on the doorstep of a WS.

I guess Cuddyer may play some first but make no mistake about it. He has stated in more than one interview he plans on being the everyday right fielder. I’m guessing it will be between Giambi, Pacheco (even though I doubt many of the other 6 or 7 other catchers in camp will be staying), and yes even JT’s son is a distinct possibility.

Guys, I think a couple of you might be missing my point (probably because this concept is not something that I am actually suggesting as being real), but the fact remains that you “could” form the staring lineup and the starting rotation out of just the “new” additions to the 40 man roster. Not that that you would actually “want” to, as everyone expects guys like Chacin, Pomeranz, Tulo, Cargo, Fowler, Helton, etc will actually be the starters.

That goes hand in hand with the point I’ve been making for a while. Dan O’Dowd BLEW THE FREAKING ___ out of his own monster because he seriously regrets 99% of the moves he’s made over the past 4 years. He began systematically destroying the organization the second the 07 WS was over and now all but 2 players from that season are gone. Finally 2012 he realized all the mistakes and just decided to start from scratch and make… Read more »

My early scouting reveals some teams with logjams at 1B, which Dan could possibly exploit. If Mark Trumbo (blocked by Pujols) can’t play 3B or OF satisfactorily , he’s a possibility, especially since the Angels will be in a dogfight in the ALW and their corner outfielders are old (an area where the Rox are very deep). Chris Parmalee in MN might be blocked if Morneau comes back intact, or Mauer can’t catch anymore. Lucas Duda, while penciled in as… Read more »

Today’s NY Times has an article about the upcoming baseball season and listed the Rockies as one of three teams under the category “Don’t believe it”. The article said that our new position players are too old and our starting pitchers are too young. I hope that we can prove the Times to be wrong.

it’s another east coast one sided opinion.Unless it has anything to talk about regarding the Yanks and Mets, it will usually be negative ; )

Let’s just sit back, enjoy the start of ST with hope that we bring 25 of our best players to Denver. Oh..and I’ll take Todd and his 300+ average and defensive skills any day until he can’t go on. Let’s just not put him in the #5 spot….

Go Rox and come on spring training!
