Darkest Hour

Losing Ways are lingering for the Colorado Rockies.  They got wins in 2 Jorge De La Rosa starts, and lost 5 between the St Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers.  The week ended with the beginning of a Nolan Arenado rehab stint with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.  Arenado played Saturday and Sunday and purportedly will be activated by the Rockies when they return to Denver Thursday for a 4 game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Not a lot sensational developed during the series with St Louis and Milwaukee.  DLR wasn’t spectacular, and certainly wasn’t inspiring in the two victories.  He went all World Cup in the 3rd inning of Tuesday’s contest when he and catcher Wilin Rosario got tangled-up and bungled a swinging bunt by the Cardinals’ Tony Cruz.  Fear had the left-hander harboring new and  profound resentment against teammate Rosario, but the two were back in the battery yesterday without appearance of animosity.  Ryan Wheeler had a big week that may secure him a big league job as the Colorado roster evolves back to normal next month.  He was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI in Tuesday’s win, and Thursday he delivered a grand slam that gave the Rockies a short-lived lead for Christian Friedrich to squander.  Tommy Kahnle allowed 2 runs in the 8th inning of that Thursday loss.  Kahnle has begun appearing later in games for a bullpen that continues to struggle.

On hand are the Washington Nationals for 3 at Nationals Park in the Nation’s Capital.  Colorado faces Jordan Zimmerman (5-4, 2.95) tonight, Stephen Strasbourg tomorrow and Doug Fister Wednesday. Thursday they’re back at Coors to face Kershaw, Greinke and the rest of the Dodgers’ cast of characters.  There’s not an easy matchup in sight.

The immortal Yohan Flande (0-0, 7.20) will toe-up against Zimmerman tonight a 5:05 MDT.  The left-hander was out for his first MLB start last Wednesday, and left the Rockies leading 5-4 after 5 innings, but the bullpen would have none of that.  Flande surrendered 4 runs on 6 hits, walked a batter and struck-out 4.  Zimmerman went 6 at Milwaukee on Tuesday and didn’t figure in the decision. Zimmerman struck-out 9 Brewers in what turned-out to be a 4-2 Nationals’ win.

Corey Dickerson is NOT hurt, of course, but he’s not in the Colorado lineup either.  Charlie Blackmon’s in left, Drew Stubbs hits 2nd in center, and Brandon Barnes is in right, hitting 6th.  Bryce Harper is back from the DL and hits 6th in the Washington order, playing left-field in an outfield that also includes Denard Span and Jayson Werth.

It’s mostly cloudy in the District of Columbia this evening.  The temperature’s in the mid-80’s with humidity of 58%.  Wind is brisk at 10 MPH, blowing across from right to left.  I think it’s still Jeff Huson with Drew Goodman for the telecast on ROoT.  Radio’s KOA 850 am.

Jeem, just in time. And nicely done. Roxmageddon Week continues. Strasburg vs. Friedrich? It could be that there’s been a bigger starting pitching matchup at some time during the history of baseball, but right now I can’t think of one. There’s a trivia question somewhere in there, something like “What’s the biggest difference in career ERA between two starting pitchers who’ve made a minimum of 18 starts (that’s what Friedrich has) each?” Friedrich: 6.37. Strasburg: 3.11. On a positive note:… Read more »

RMH, if the Rockies win this Mismatch of All Time (Friedrich vs., umm, Strasburg) my faith in baseball as the greatest game ever – in which the worst team with the worst pitcher can beat one of the best teams with on of the best pitchers on any given Tuesday – will be restored.
