Dex & Rut 1-2 Punch Padres

Lefter Dexter comes through again.

Fowler hit two home runs during Friday night’s game at PetCo.  The switch-hitting Dex has looked nothing but money from the left side, as all six of his long bombs have come from that side of home. His second HR of the night came in the eighth off Rockies ex-closer, Huston Street.  Locked in as Dex has been, Street didn’t stand a chance.  Asked after the game if Brignac’s at-bat before him (warning track out) helped, and Fowler answered that it didn’t, that he in-fact knows what Street has pitched him in the past and used it to make the man look the fool.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Josh Rutledge had a Taco Shot after Fowler’s 2nd bomb in the 8th, giving the Rockies a back-to-back HR attack and enough runs to keep Betancourt cool for the clean close. It was his first HR of the season.
  • Todd Helton caught fire, giving credit in his post-game Stout interview to bullpen catcher Pat Burgess, who has been watching film with Todd to see if he can fix his sloppy swing since the end of Spring.  It seems like the film worked as Todd went 3-4 with a key double in the eighth.  Helton more than doubled his AVG that was .095 coming into Friday’s game and .200 leaving.
  • Garland went six while giving up three runs on six hits.  He struck out four and, as Todd put it after the game, was efficient and gave them a chance to win.

LOWLIGHTS

  • Wilton Lopez continues to struggle, his ERA climbing from 10.80 to 12.46 after only one inning of work.  He surrendered two runs on three hits and looked like the weakest link.

My Goodness Ed, couldn’t you get better seats? 🙂

Nice to wake up to this…fell asleep in the 7th, new puppy had me up at 5:00am-seeing the box score for 8-9 innings helps!

Keep it going Rox.

Really like the Fowler Rutledge combo at the top. Rutledge is a tough dude. Got plowed by Cuddyer in the final exhibition game, and then by Cabrera last night. Pops up and keeps going.

Lost in Helton’s 3-4 night was his two defensive gems. The lead throw to Rutledge on the bunt was perfect, as was his hold of the base on the wide throw by Nelson. The first prevented what looked like a perfect bunt single (kudos to Josh for taking that shot). The second would have been an error on Nelson if anyone else was playing first. Speaking of Josh Rutledge, we are lucky he’s not injured from that collision. Looking at… Read more »

I turned the channel after the Rox went down 5-3 in the bot of the 7th, turned it back in the bot of the 8th and saw it tied 5-5. Great hit by Helton there(great night all around for him) in the 8th. This is what we need from him. Can not believe the start Dex is off to. Hopefully he can duplicate last seasons numbers, but obviously improve greatly on the HR totals like it’s looking he will do.… Read more »

Question. Would Fowler be a better 2 hitter now that his power is here? Maybe lead off with Rutledge?

I personally think they should leave Dex in the leadoff spot. The ability of Rutledge to play small ball I think fits the 2 hole hitter perfect. Also, even though Dex isn’t much of a base stealer and he did get thrown out last night, putting him in the 2 hole in front of Cargo means he will never attempt to steal. I think that still needs to be a part of Dex’s game, I think he needs to steal… Read more »

I put in on Record for the 8th and 9th and went to bed, thinking “Wouldn’t it be swell to watch the rest tomorrow and see a nice comeback win?” Also thinking, and believing a bit more “#%$@#, is this where the long slide begins/continues?”

Wellnow! 🙂

Yeh, it was Friday night so I was stayin’ up ’til the end, as long as it was before the witching hour. I’ve liked Rutledge for a while but last night…my respect for the dude soared. And the patented “Helton scoop” (not trademarked) was a nice addition to the 4 other gems last night. Almost looked like the Toddfather of old. Garland, while not as sharp as last week, was more than adequate in keeping the ball down other than… Read more »

On Wilton Lopez: Weiss said something about how he wasn’t necessarily getting hammered, and a lot of balls were just finding holes. He has a point. Batting Avg Against on Balls in Play (BABIP) so far this year is a staggering .565. Normal for a Coors pitcher is in the .305 range, and Lopez over his last 3 years was at .297, .307, .305. Since there’s nothing apparently wrong with him healthwise (velocity is the same, etc.), I’d expect him… Read more »

I watched the first inning and the last two so missed the first Dex homer and the Lopez blow up. The 2nd home by Dex was quite a blow and that picture of Hundley’s face is a classic. Not sure if it’s just a blip by Lopez or not. He’ certainly hasn’t looked good. But fortunately for him (and perhaps unfortunately for the rest of us) he’s DoD’s major off-season acquisition so he’ll have more rope than the average reliever… Read more »

I guess Tracy thinks Dex is Willie Mays. Sure there were a couple Dex could have caught, maybe.

The play in Wednesday’s game everybody is apparently wall-papering-over furiously was Cargo completely dogging it on a double by Brandon Crawford. Carlos couldn’t be bothered to get in-front of the ball, so he non-chalanted it bare-hand, and it rolled to the wall. I guess we need to sub EYJ in to right when we’re way behind so Cargo can go home early.
