Jare, the Renck has some breaking news … lol … “Rockies are scouting out of options pitchers”

That’s old news – they do that every year and they have been doing it since day one of spring training. They have been watching Tampa Bay closely.

I just thought it was funny that it would even get a mention on a national level today. That’s why I included the … lol.

and on a more serious note: The Renck also tweeted that 9 players were sent packing to minor league camp: right-handed pitchers Chad Bettis, Parker Frazier, Dan Houston, left-handed pitchers Tyler Anderson and Erick Threets. Catcher Lars Davis, infielder Cristhian Adames and outfielders Rafael Ortega and Kyle Parker.

Fellow baseball junkies… I haven’t been posting much in the last few months…BUT…today I can no longer sit quietly by and watch this spring training offense without commenting and wondering why in the hell we are first-pitch swinging on, what seems, every at bat? Please check out today’s game log on CBS Sports or wherever else you care to. 37 total pitches in nine innings of baseball by the Chi Sox!! Are the Rox trying to get back to SRF… Read more »

Yup…went back…check this out. top 1 … 3 pitches top 2 … 5 pitches top 3 … 7 pitches top 4 … 3 pitches top 5 … 3 pitches top 6 … 4 pitches top 7 … 6 pitches top 8 … 3 pitches top 9 … 3 pitches Sale…5 innings, 23 pitches relievers … 4 innings, 14 pitches This, IMHO, is totally unacceptable. Totally, spring training or not. There is no way a major league team can justify this… Read more »

um…WOW. You are NOT overreacting at all! That quite possibly could be the worst i’ve ever seen, and i was at the shortest game in Rockies history against the Pad’s with Cookie throwing a complete game shutout with 81 pitches and the game was less than 2 hours…

The only thing i can guess at is that maybe Dante is using this part of spring training to have them practice being extremely agressive?

CBS says Sale threw 23 pitches
ESPN says he threw 58

I guess I overreacted since it is clear that the sportswriters and stats people don’t care if their stats are accurate.

Troy said the Yorvit homered on a 3-2 count.

I counted the full play-by-play pitches…either someone is not doing their job or they just don’t give a damn.

It would be nice if we could get accurate stats even in spring training games.

Sorry for the rant.

Oops. Never mind.

Silver lining: we only gave up 3 runs! By the way, do we get a radar gun reading in the Chisox park? I’m wondering if Pom is still all over the place fastball velocity-wise.

Ed, you’re not overreacting. But I can’t believe that’s right — 37 pitches in a 9 inning major league game? How can that be possible? I haven’t ever tracked that, but I do know that the most efficient 9-inning complete games I’ve ever heard of still go about 70 pitches. Just astonishing.

What was the total time for the game? 54 minutes? Guess you beat the traffic …

I’m having all kinds of trouble verifying my info. I’m going to the game at SRF tomorrow(Wed)and have a friend in uniform in the dugout(a coach, not a player)and I will ask him(he was at the game). I will convey his rememberances back to all. The more I think about it the more I’m thinking it was the stats and media people in the pressbox talking and socializing and not paying close attention since it was a spring training game…still… Read more »

My biggest fear with Dante was we’d go back to swinging for the fences every at bat instead of using the whole field. I hope plate discipline and situational hitting haven’t been tossed in the trashcan.

As much as I was hoping I was wrong regarding the pitch counts from Monday’s game, it appears my initial report was correct. Chris Sale in 5 innings of work threw 9 strikes that were not hit(2 of which were fouls)… 0 balls, 3 hits(all on the first pitch)…11 BIP that were outs 23 total pitches Additionally, not 1, yup, that’s right, not 1 pitch from the White Sox was called a ball May I add…YIKES!! Please, someone find out… Read more »

Ed, that is astounding…where did you find that breakdown? We need to do an article on that because it isn’t being reported anywhere!

JD…I think I found the culprit. Two sources reported different totals for Sale, but both say he was in the 50 pitch range. I am now convinced that CBS Sports does NOT record the pitches that are called balls(although 4 pitch walks appear to be reported)…can’t figure this differnce in reported stats out yet. More “investigative journalism” by yours truly during the course of my spring training games will let me find out what the hell is going on with… Read more »

It is not surprising to me that CBS Sports does not report the correct totals. I typically use the scoreboard link found on the Rockies site. I do not know why but on a few rare days they provide the actual pitches when gameday is set in the pitch by pitch mode. Well over 90% of the time they report all strike outs as three pitch strike outs and all walks as four pitch walks. They also follow the same… Read more »

Thanks BK…that makes me feel a little better. From my(and I’m guessing a few of us here)perspective, I would really like to have an accurate count and sequence of all the pitches thrown by all the pitchers in any particular game. Once again, sorry to all the RWOers who had to read my diatribe(s). Probably left over from last year. On another note…I’m heading to Vegas next Thursday for the NCAA’s and will make my annual bet on the over/under… Read more »

The over/under is pretty simple. If the odds makers say Rox number of wins will be 72 1/2 for over and under. (They put the half after the number so you will never tie, only win or lose.) If the Rox win 72 or less games, the betters on under win. Likewise, if the Rox win 73 games, the betters of over win. I am not much of a bettor myself, but I believe the payout is 2-1 of what… Read more »

EdtheUmp, don’t put too much sweat into pitch counts for spring training games. I tried to keep track of pitch counts a few years back during spring training and I quickly found out that pitch counts are totally wrong no matter where you look because everywhere you look for the stats, they all are extracted from the one and only scorekeeper at the ST game. Scorekeepers are still in vacation mode and don’t keep track of pitches. The only way… Read more »

RMH, agree always to take stats and stuff too seriously from ST, but we are now three weeks from the end of ST, and that means we should at least start to be aware. For injured guys they are still working out the kinks. I fully expect that DLR will wait to push it fully until last 2 starts for example. But I am with ED/Ump. Been home sick again (the joy of chronic illnesses), and watching both a little… Read more »
