ROX OFF FOR 3 IN ST LOUIE, P’BURG, BOSTON

The Colorado Rockies went 4-2 last week, the 4 wins in succession, stanched a 7-game Coors Field losing streak, and head out on 9-game roadie that concludes in Boston on May 26 with a 19-18 record.  The trip commences tonight at 6:15 MT in St Louis with Chad Bettis (3-2, 4.56) on the mound for Colorado.  Lefty Jaime Garcia (3-2, 2.58) gets the call for the Cards, who find themselves an unfamiliar 8 games off the pace in the cut-throat National League Central.

The Rockies’ 2016 week 6 got off to a dismal start.  Manager Walt Weiss, needing starter depth in the aftermath of May 7’s 13 inning defeat, got 6 from Tyler Chatwood, but they came with the expense of a five-run 5th, and what relief was available only made it worse in a 10-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.   Tuesday Chris Rusin made it into the 6th before falling apart and losing 5-1.  On Wednesday Colorado was up 7-1 behind Bettis going into the 7th, but 3 Dbacks runs in that inning followed by 3 more in the 8th made a solo shot from Nolan Arenado a necessity in the 8-7 victory that halted the skid.

On came the hotly touted New York Mets, and rookie Jon Gray’s opportunity to prove his recent success was more than a sea-level spectacle, and Gray delivered emphatically, limiting New York to 2 second inning runs over 7 innings and earning his first MLB win.  Saturday the Rockies ran-up 7 on Mets’ fill-in Logan Verrett in the early innings, and Weiss went to school on the third-time-through/middle-inning trouble from Monday and Tuesday, getting Eddie Butler back to the dugout in a hurry after Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda (doo-da-day) strafed him with a double and single leading off the 6th.  Gonzalez Germen came on and used both of his last names to limit the damage to 2, and Colorado prevailed 7-4, suddenly had a series win over contending New York, and a chance to sweep.  Ryan Raburn secured that with a 2-run 7th inning blast on Sunday that made it 4 in a row and got Chatwood his first 2016 home victory.

The 4 wins ran the Rockies’ record at Coors to 8-10, and a game over .500 overall  as they head off on this big, bad journey through three contending localities.  Bettis and Garcia go after it tonight.  Bettis had given-up one in the 6th before getting chased in the 7th Wednesday.  The 4 he surrendered came on 9 hits without a walk.  He struck-out 8.  Garcia was also out Wednesday, at Anaheim against the Angels.  He got the win with a 7-inning, 2-run/4-hit outing, and Garcia also stuck-out 8.

Carlos Gonzalez, fresh off a slump-busting double and home run, moves up to the cleanup slot in tonight’s Colorado lineup. Arenado remains in the 3-hole, Mark Reynolds is 5th, and Dustin Garneau will catch Bettis and hit 8th.  The Cards are throwing a number of unfamiliar names at us tonight.  Stephen Piscotty will hit 2nd and play right-field.  Jeremy Hazelbaker hits 6th in center and Aledmys Diaz follows at shortstop.

It’s 57° and cloudy at game time at Busch.  The humidity’s about 70% and the wind’s blowing straight-in from under the Arch at about 87 MPH.  I don’t know who made the trip with Drew for ROOT, but it ought to be Jerry and Jack with the radio on KOA.

Same age old problem. Score early and put the bats away early. Bullpen has to do it again. Need insurance runs when Mcgee gives up 3 in 9th. We all know Cards are always top tier in RISP hitting. Does not bode well for McGee.

I’ve had enough nervous breakdowns when Jake McGee pitches in 9th. Time to promote Carlos Estevez to 9th inning.
