The Rockies have optioned right-handed pitcher Zach Putnam to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room for tonights starter: Edwar Cabrera.
The 6-foot left-hander Cabrera has spent the 2012 season at Double-A Tulsa, going 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA (98.0 ip, 32 er), 23 walks and 82 strikeouts in 15 starts for the Drillers. A native of Bani, Dominican Republic, Cabrera was recently named as one of the pitchers for the World team at the 2012 All-Star Futures Game, one of two Rockies prospects selected to play in the game (also Nolan Arenado). Cabrera split his 2011 Minor League season between Single-A Asheville and High-A Modesto, and combined to go 8-3 with a 3.34 ERA (167.0 ip, 62 er), 41 walks and 217 strikeouts. Cabrera’s 217 strikeouts led all of Minor League Baseball and set the Rockies all-time organizational record. Cabrera was originally signed by Colorado as a non-drafted free agent on March 5, 2008.
