First Full Workout and Helton Apology

The Toddfather on His Way to Workout

While the day ended uncomfortably, at least for one Mr. Todd Helton, it began in such a way that RoxWalkOff regular TJinPhoenix gave the first full workout his seal of approval.

TJ sent me a few quick texts, and some pictures, of the days workout. His update helps those of us, that weren’t able to just drive down the street and catch some baseball in our backyard, get a feeling for what we were missing.

Todd Helton “looks in shape“, TJ texted, and he looked like he was moving really well after his surgery.

Todd seemed the most uncomfortable behind the microphone, as he held a press conference, post-workout, to explain his DUI:

Last week I got behind the wheel of my truck after I had drunk. All I can do now is apologize and ask for forgiveness.  I spoke to my teammates earlier today and they were very supportive of me and my situation. I’m very grateful to my wife, my family, my teammates and the Colorado Rockies organization for their support. I am determined to learn from my mistakes and I’ve gotten help. Part of making a monumental mistake, like I made, is recognizing the mistake and making sure you are doing all you can to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I’m doing that.  I’m doing everything I can to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Overall it’s been positive.  There is nobody harder on myself than me…I was more disappointed in myself than anybody. We were planning on heading down here the next day, so it was a matter of time, a matter of gathering my thoughts to make sure everything I said that I could backup. Obviously it is a tough situation, dealing with this, but it’s something in my mind that I don’t know how far behind I want it because I want to always remember it.  That’s how you are gonna learn from it.  As far as baseball, I’m ready to go.  Why would I not be ready to get on the baseball field after this.

TJ also mentioned that Tulo, himself coming off of season-ending surgery, also looked very good during the day’s workouts.  He said that they had, “Tulo showing a little range” and that there was “definitely no loss on Tulo’s arm.  I’m right behind 1st base and it is a cannon!”

Oh how I wish I could smell that grass. It’s 4F here and spring seems so far away.

When its 118 here in June, you all remember me OK? Seriously, the way they set up the workouts is a fan’s dream come true. You can walk right up to the chain link fence and watch them work out (by the way-all free). They move between the workout fields-all 4 of them- and sometime you can grab autographs. I was able to chat with Dex (marriage is suiting him), Cargo (briefly, we chatted about the picture that JD posted… Read more »

Ed, sounds fantastic…however the family and I are finally getting away during spring break so that day doesn’t’ work. Mrs TJinPhoenix has been noodling me to email you and find a day to ditch work and come to a game (did I marry the right one or what?!?). In any case, I’ll re-read the email you shot me a while back with your availability and let you know. One more tidbit from yesterday, as I was standing on the edge… Read more »

Dante Bichette liked what he saw out of Helton in the batting cage. Spring’s eternal hope is probably clouding my eyes, but it seems like the moment Dante was named the hitting coach everyone started to relax and swing the bats freely. I also like WW giving the players more freedom to make decisions especially on the base paths. Gonzalez and Fowler have already said they are going to get more aggressive and hopefully swipe more bases this year. I… Read more »

Just realized I didn’t respond to this….I would say maybe 50-60 folks, but its so spread out that number may be a bit higher. Also, we’ve learned that on the first day of full team workouts they always start later, so if you show up expecting a 9 or 10 am start, they usually don’t get down on the fields until about 11 or 11:30…but hey, it beats being at the office! That may have turned a few folks off… Read more »

File under “things that make you DOD’s name in vein:”

Oakland A’s giving Seth Smith reps at 1st base.

Your comment is true, but it is no better than Colvin/Cuddyer/Pacheco getting reps at 1B. I’d rather have those three over Seth “swing for the fences” Smith.

Re: TJ’s comments… I think that Dante is the best offseason addition to this team. Maybe WW will be, but the early leader is Dante. He clearly knows hitting (did a pretty good job teaching his kids!), and it looks like there is a potential for some fun at Coors this year, even if the team sucks. As I said in a previous novel (lol), if they are fun to watch, I’ll be happy, regardless of W-L. Our day will… Read more »
