FirstLook: Phillies vs. Rockies, 5.20.15

The worst-case scenario with Troy Tulowitzki so far hasn’t materialized, thankfully, because there is no Plan B at shortstop. Wilin Rosario seems to have benefitted from the trip to Los Pollos Hermanos in Albuquerque, especially in his play around the bag at 1B, and he is hitting since his May 10th return. Sending Corey Dickerson to the DL and exiling the oft-whiffing Drew Stubbs clears the way for a fresh crop of outfielders.

Ben Paulsen gets a start in LF tonight, while the bench will feature Brandon Barnes – who, financial and service time considerations with Stubbs aside, probably should have made the club out of camp. Stubbs as a five-plus year guy has apparently accepted his demotion via option so he can play every day and work out his struggles on a diet of Blake’s and Venezia’s (which we have here in Arizona as well).

It’s good to see this Rox leadership making hard decisions, finally.

The Rox escaped a frigid affair last night with their first home win since April 24. It seems really hard to believe there have been only 5 wins at Coors so far in 2015. The Rox have a high-swing, low-contact offense and are dead last in BB drawn. That “league leading” batting average has evaporated, and the run scoring has really suffered as a result.

I know folks didn’t see Bettis’ outing last night as scintillating, and he did get hit fairly hard, but he issued no walks and limited damage. I’m planning on looking at the walks-issued-to-outcome correlation this weekend.

In the Phillies tonight, we have a fairly evenly matched opponent, and for the first time in a long time perhaps an advantage on the mound. Severino Gonzalez is an 89mph right hander with only 2 major league starts. Eddie Butler seeks to finally put it together and avoid the walks yiolded epidemic.

I fear tonight that the Rox will make an unknown pitcher look like a Cy Young winner.

Perhaps they give this guy who has bad numbers (don’t know the context or anything about him) a near no-hitter?

Butler shoots himself in the foot after a near escape. I feel really sick for Walt Weiss, who deserves better (but who also knew more or less what he signed up for?.

Ok, after a 42 pitch first, why wouldn’t the lead-off hitter try to work as many pitches as possible? The pitcher has to be stiff, sitting in the dugout. Instead Chuck Natzy swings at pitch #2 and pops-out. Lead-off guys work the count, right?????

None of the Rockies work the count, reportedly and demonstrably

Butler has no redeeming value as a MLB starter. He misses all over the place with every type of pitch.

Nothing to say after this one. Official attendance was 21,000+. Maybe 5,000 crazy fans. Too darn cold to watch baseball. Too cold for the Rockies also but the Phillies new Cy Young candidate shuts down the Rockies. 20 years ago when Coors was built (and started 2 or 3 years before that) a retractable roof and natural grass was a pipe dream. After the weather this month it looks real good. Ever since 2011-2012 or so when I realized that… Read more »
