Flurry of Moves: Stubbs and Morales in / Outman and Herrera Out

In a couple of surprise moves today the Rockies will be sending Josh Outman to the Cleveland Indians and in return they will be getting outfielder Drew Stubbs.  Stubbs, who is 29, hit .233 | .305 | .360 last season and was projected to earn $3.8MM in arbitration.

The team also picked up Franklin Morales and RHP Chris Martin from the Red Sox in exchange for Jonathan “Sparkplug” Herrera.

Rockies faithful will be none to happy with the return of Morales who played for Colorado in a series of meltdown tours around the US between 2007 – 2011.

Jared – I’ve been on the road all morning, just saw the trades news, and the FIRST thing the came across my mind was that you will be bummed that Johnny Sparkplug is gone!

Jared – look at it this way, we traded a sparkplug for some kerosene (my old nickname for Morales).

Honesty – big picture (and keeping in mind I don’t worry about $$$ too much) I like having the combo of Stubbs and Morales more than the combo of Herrera and Outman.

I’m also a LeMeheiu fan………so I think (????? – you never know with the Rox) this is a vote of confidence for him as well.

I like the Drew Stubbs move a lot. I think he will work great as an indirect platoon partner with Morneau, moving Cuddyer over to 1b on those days.

Franklin is one of my least favorite Rockies players of all time….BUT if we aren’t trying to sneak him into the closers role like we did before then I’m okay with it.

I won’t miss Herrera too much. Decent player, but no upside.

Prog, as I recall, the Rockies tried Frankie in just about every conceivable situation, not just closer, and he failed everywhere.

I don’t think he ever was truly a lefty specialist. If he was hot they left him in to later be exposed. If he was struggling they left him in hoping he found his arm slot.

He was never really a get 1 guy out type pitcher.

I always argued he should have been left as a starter. 6 innings of Frankling once a week was a lot better than 4 innings of him spread over 4 games.

I was never a Morales fan (hence my nickname of “Kerosene” for him) BUT in fairness, the guy always had a great, live arm. He was a thrower that needed to learn how to pitch. Maybe the Red Sox taught him a few tricks. He wasn’t good there…..but he also wasn’t awful. I didn’t expect him to make it with them, and he generally proved me wrong. Stubbs (once a fantasy darling due to his potential speed/power combination) should be… Read more »

Not much of a Morales fan but I do think he is better than Outman.

Hey, I just loved the guy during his flashes of solid brilliance in ’07. But really. Mostly Kerosene with a Big Side of Wild since then…

So whom do you prefer – Morales or Nicasio? I think I’m more inclined toward Nicasio cuz his nickname is not “kerosene.”

Just hearing Frankie’s name makes me twitch. I’ll miss Sparkplug as well, Jared. No mention of Chris Martin–where are you Ag? Found this on ESPN trade report: The 27-year-old Martin split time between the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs and Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in 2013, pitching a combined 72 relief innings in 42 games. He had a 2.25 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 10 walks. He was great in the Dominican Winter League, earning six saves in eight innings without… Read more »

Somehow I think Martin was the target as long as we took Morales of the BoSox hands.

I’ll miss Jonny. But the infield was overcrowded. Means we’ll keep Rutledge in the utility spot and give him a chance to compete as the regular again. When Tulo is out, who’s going to be the replacement? Assuming LeMahieu stays at 2nd, Jonny was the best sub they had at short. Or is Culbertson a shortstop (don’t know much about him)? Yes Rutledge played there but he didn’t have much range as I remember. Outman vs Morales is an even… Read more »

I like Jared’s comments about Jonny. We’ll miss him. He lands in a great situation. I guess he’ll mentor Bogaarts and take I’ve if Bogaarts isn’t ready. They’d then go acquire someone else. Stephen Drew’s agent just played this one a wrong. No panic in Boston. As for our side of the deal: I think this means 2B is wide open for Rutledge. LeMahieu is a good defender and won’t kill us at 2B, but face facts: we need more… Read more »

As always – love the analysis. This leads me to one question, and two observations: Question – should the OF platoon be in CF rather than LF? I’m leaning towards leave Cargo in Left, and platoon CF. I say this because Stubbs is a really solid defensive OFer that can cover some serious ground. Leaving Cargo in left should mean a little less stress on his legs. Observation #1 – against RHed pitching, Blackmon/Dickerson in CF, Cuddyer in RF, and… Read more »

Always felt Frankie was better[far from great]as a starter where he had less pressure and more time to find a rhythm. Also gives us all someone to dump on right out of the chute in ST.AG can verify this but I believe Blackmon hit lefties well last season.Above .300 by the end of the season,as my addled brain recollects.

Sdcarp, I forgot about Nicasio. A Morales-Nicasio piggyback 5th starter thing would be a great idea. I do think Outman will succeed in Cleveland. They’ll use him as a strict LOOGY and he’ll have some nice numbers to show for it. I think it’s easier to limit roles like that in the AL since you don’t have to worry about pinch hitting for pitchers and burning other relievers. This is also why I think Boone Logan may be just as… Read more »

I think we’re on the same page here – Stubbs platoons with the winner of the Blackmon/Dickerson sweepstakes and that platoon becomes the #3/#4 outfielder (order them however you like). Barnes (#5 OFer) plays VS. LHed pitching by virtue of Morneau sitting and Cuddyer moving to 1B. The flaw in my bench analysis above is that I neglected Ryan Wheeler. By virtue of being LHed and an infielder, he probably has a better shot of being the final bench player… Read more »

I was one of the very few Morales fans. I do agree with: “He had probably the best pure stuff of any Rockies pitcher ever. I say let him have a go at starting again”

and this “Million dollar arm…ten cent head”

I thought Blackmon and Dickerson were bright spots who played hard right to the final day of the season,so I don’t see why so many are assuming that Barnes even makes the club out of ST.Based on the limited samples I like the two guys we ended the season with.As I said above,a bonus is Blackmon hits lefties!

I believe that they are making their search for a backup catcher a low priority so they can give Jordan Pacheco the first crack at it. Tom Murphy is #9 and Will Swanner is #24 on the Purps list of Rockies prospects. I project that Murphy or Swanner is in the long term plans as backup catcher. If nobody else, I hope they resign Torrealba although Pacheco is a better hitter. My ideal situation is to have Torrealba retire from… Read more »
