Fowler Agrees to Two-Year, $11.6 M

Dexter Fowler has agreed to sign a two-year deal that is reportedly worth $11.6 million, according to Jon Heyman.

Fowler, who is 26 years old, posted a .300/.389/.474 line last season.  He also hit 13 home runs and stole 12 bags.  He was eligible for arbitration and the new contract will buy out his second and third years of eligibility.

During talks Fowler filed for $5.15 million and the team countered at $4.25. He will receive $4.25 million this year — a $1 million signing bonus, plus a $3.25 million salary. He’ll also receive $7.35 million in 2014.

Dex is the Rockies all-time triples leader (50) and has played more games in CF in club history than any other player.

Good for Dex, but something doesn’t look right here. He signed a 2 year deal for $11.6? $5.8 per year? When in arbitration he was only asking for $5.15? Huh? I don’t get it. Unless year one is $5 and year 2 is $6.6. That doesn’t make sense either. I would have waited until the end of 2013 (he would have been arbitration-eligible in ’14 as well) and if he did very well again this year, give him 2 years… Read more »

$3.25 this year and $7.25 next? Well, that equals $10.5. Troy, your article is worse then most of mine are! $500,000 less than the arbitration amount the Rox proposed for this year? Somebody has to give me a tutorial on the thinking here. Not to mention Renck’s math!

My math is as bad as Troy’s. $500K less? How about a million!

Good for Dex. I see him as one of the bigger potential benefactors of Tracy’s tinkering not being around (I assume) this year. Write him in the lineup in CF, 1st or 2nd in the lineup, 150 times and be done with it. I see 275 BA, 350 OBP, 90 R, 12 HR, and maybe even 20 SB. Let him play!

It’s also important to point out that if he plays at that level, or close, with a contract like this – he’ll be a very tradable commodity.

Seems like a good deal to me. Hey its not my money. The guy only makes half of what Cuddyer makes.

Great deal after so many fans were down on him in his early years. Seems like he has started to hit equally well from both sides of the plate and also he has reduced the strikeout rate (although still a bit too high for lead off hitter). Just needs to work on the bunt a little bit more and eliminate starting the game off with a K (my pet peeve) as if he’s still warming up for the game. Good… Read more »

I like the move. Lock him up for 2 years and see how he plays this season and perhaps the beginning of the next year. Personally I think he can be close to a super star. Of course if he really breaks out the Rockies will end up trading him rather than paying super star money. They would rather pay the big money for a guy like Cuddeyer. Who knows. By the way Patrick Saunders had an article on Denverpost.com… Read more »

Bill, in my Pitchers article (http://jaredb17.sg-host.com/2013/02/10/pitchers-report-with-questions/) i mentioned that they were filming on Sunday because they couldn’t actually take to the field until the physicals on Monday. I thought that as well (that they were wasting time filming when the guys showed up to practice), but then found out about the physicals before practice and it made sense to film when they couldn’t do much else…

OK, I’ll buy that. Didn’t read your article all the way through I guess.

Well – he can pal around with Reid Brignac because we just dont have enough middle infielders.
