Guthrie Hit Hard as Rox Hardly Hit

Jeremy Guthrie looked very hittable on the mound today, giving up four earned in six innings as the Rockies lost to the Diamondbacks.  Guthrie allowed 10 hits, five of them for extra bases.

Eric Young Jr. continued to impress with two hits and decent fielding in left and center.  Scutaro also had a great day at second, diving for two balls and almost getting both runners out at first, although one was ruled an error because of a bad throw to Todd.

The Rockies were held hitless by Patrick Corbin through five innings.  Guthrie broke up the no hitter with a single and eventually came home on a two rin single by Scutaro.

================ PRE GAME ==============

Today’s game (2:00 MST) will be on Root, so we can watch in HD as Fowler comes to the plate in Iannetta’s old spot in the line-up. He has been dropped to the eight-hole following a terrible Spring Training that has seen his average hovering over half of the Mendoza Line. Guthrie will get the start against the Padres and will be backed up by the following cast of characters:

LF Young
SS Herrera
2B Scutaro
C Hernandez
1B Helton
3B Pacheco
RF Colvin
CF Fowler
RHP Guthrie

We are getting close to finding out who will “make the cut” as several players will be decided on over the next couple of days.

Where’s the beef – Cuddyer, Tulo, Cargo and Giambi? This is the typical lineup that J Tracy trotted out to the diamond every Sunday in 2011 it would seem. Gotta love spring training and J Tracy – and those indefinite contracts!

Just heard that Casey Blake was unconditionally released. Third base is now open to…..Pacheco? Nelson?

I wish I could…..I’m at work listening to the game on the radio (AtBat on my phone). The Rockies have a little rally going at the moment.

I always worry when I read of a player radically changing their routine during the off season. Seems to throw them off every time. This year Dex started working out with Tulo, hitting the weights hard. Now it seems his swing is off.

Last year it was Cook, losing a lot of weight. His timing was off from the git go it seems.

Dex had issues last year before his Camp Tulo…i don’t think it is anything more than his brain getting in the way of his stroke…he goes up there and doesn’t seem to have the confidence to hit, but once he does success breeds success and we’ve seen that the last 2 seasons – starts slow, ends well…i don’t blame Camp Tulo, I blame his mind…

I’ve never been a huge fan of Dexter’s performance (just his potential) and have to marvel at Jim Tracy’s confidence in him. The slow starts, demotions every year, now THIS. A horrible spring training (yet JT says Dex could bat 0.00 and start on opening day – this from Denver Post article). Wow. I would love to see Cargo back in center – watching him roam around there is a thing of beauty. Then Cuddy in right and Colvin in… Read more »

wouldn’t mind seeing the Rox drop Dexter down from the leadoff spot. Everyone talks about the importance of the leadoff hitter setting the table via walk, hit (gets hit) however he can get on. They also talk about the ability to steal and I am not convinced Dex will be the basestealer they want. His physical make up (i.e. long legs) don’t possess that quick first few steps necessary to get the proper jump. There isn’t any doubt that once… Read more »

Anyone else thinking what I’m thinking? EY is getting some work in CF so JT can start EY over Dex if Dex makes his annual slow start and trip to AAA? As a result, I think the Rox will go with five OF allowing EY to break camp with the team. That would mean that Nelson is guaranteed a roster spot due to him being out of options. That would come down to Pacheco and Hererra for the final spot… Read more »

I counted 37 on the 40 man roster. I know there were 39 and gained one when they outrighted Jamie Hoffman and he chose free agency. I am not sure where the other spot came from. It is also likely that De La Rosa starts the season on the 60 day DL which will free another 40 man roster spot until he comes back off of the DL.
