FRESH START

New thread for tonight as requested by the vacationing RMH.  And it is a fresh start, right?  A win after 6 losses?  A fresh thread?  Get it?  (oh boy)  Jaredean once told me when we were corresponding about RWO contributions that “just a couple of sentences” are all that’s needed to create a spot for comments.  So that’s what ya got tonight, guys and girls.

Great to get Chatty and Zero back.Phiiiy series coming up is no slam dunk. They have gotten some good young players and hurlers performing well this year. Here’s hoping JDLR can keep us in the game and maybe we can feast on SF bullpen again!

Kyle Freeland, AAA debut: 7 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K. David Dahl: 4-5, 2 doubles last night. A pretty impressive start in AAA. The young talent is getting closer and closer …

Ag……you’re psychic (or running just ahead of me)! Dahl 10-15 through 3 starts in ABQ. In the meantime, Freeland is having a much needed, IP/strength building/confidence building season. I think you and I mildly disagree regarding Freeland and his call-up window. In my mind, he’s third in line at best (behind Hoffman and Marquez at least). Not because of lack of talent, performance, or execution. IMO, he just needs to have a full, uninterrupted season to build strength and Hartford… Read more »

I’m going to go a bit further down the farm; Parker French and Jack Wynkoop are both in high A now after their promotions from Asheville. I will continue to say this until you cut my voice box – love their work load and very low BB/9 rate. Sdcarp, I don’t think we should leave out Harrison Musgrave as a candidate for next year’s rotation. FYI, unless I misread the news, Justin Miller was not DFA’ed but was put on… Read more »

RMH – correct regarding Miller…..and probably Musgrave as well.

MLBTradeRumors has posted a retraction of their post that Miller was DFAed.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/rockies-designate-justin-miller-activate-adam-ottavino.html

“*An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated that Miller had been designated for assignment. Harding has since clarified that he was moved to the disabled list.”

Holy cow:

“Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez “expressed an interest” in being dealt in a recent meeting with the Rockies’ front office, Jon Heyman of todaysknuckleball.com reports. Colorado could explore deals for both CarGo and fellow outfielder Charlie Blackmon this summer, per the report.”

This may really happen!

Based on Cargo’s and Bridich’s comments it appears that Heyman either made up this rumor or was fed very bad info. Heyman retracted the part about the meeting but is still claiming that Cargo is amenable to a trade. Cargo’s comments also do not confirm this since he openly stated he wants to be a part of when the Rockies start doing good.

Love Cargo and as long as he’s not a Dodger, Red Sock or White Sock I will always love him. With this team within 3 games of .500 I would say its a coin toss to keep him. Now that we’re 7 or 8 games off .500 I say trading him is a good move. Blackmon should also be moved, but we got to get more than a bum reliever for him.

Prog……last year’s Cespedes for Michael Fulmer trade could be a good benchmark regarding Cargo. Fulmer entered 2015 generally ranked in the 10-15 range in the Mets system. All scouts loved his arm, but many thought he’d be a reliever. By the time the trade occurred , many scouts felt like Fulmer had moved into the 5-10 range for the Mets. Cespesdes was cheaper since the Mets were only on the hook for 2 months of $$$$. But Cargo’s contract is… Read more »

Regarding Cargo – this article is good (IMO):

http://www.denverpost.com/2016/07/07/carlos-gonzalez-rockies-losing-ways/

I think this is fair. Good journalism AND honesty from Cargo. Read between the lines and I think he’s far from a certain resign if offered. So if that’s the case…..then all offers should be considered.

Great game last night, albeit events in Dallas kept me from watching this until the wee hours this morning. I do chuckle when records such as “Most rookie homers before the All-Star Break” are bantered about, given the disparity in the number of games teams have played at the All-Star break. In 1972 the All-Star game wasn’t played until July 25th, and the Giants had played 93 games by then. By comparison, Story has (at least) the same number of… Read more »

Some interesting history there Bob…..hope you weren’t too affected by the WV flooding.

The whole K thing is interesting. Post PED Era, baseball seems to be trending younger, with the balance of power shifting back to the pitchers. This whole new generation of hitters seems to K more (although I’m not attempting to make an excuse for Story specifically). Just seems to come with the territory these days.

Piece of crap Jake McGee ruins a dominant start by Jon Gray. McGee’s got nothing. Got hammered on a hanging breaking ball after throwing a 90 mph fastball. I can’t stand this guy. Time to let him go and move on. Meanwhile, double play ball artist and career (and still) mediocrity Chad Qualls is purely a mop up man, but if you ask me who’s sucked worse, it’s a no brainer — McGee.

Two thumbs up. Mcgee had been the difference between. 500 and 7 games under.

When you sign (or acquire) 3 aging washed up relievers — McGee, Motte, Qualls — pretty soon you’re going to find yourself having to depend on 3 old washed up relievers. Now having said that, remember that Walt is partly to blame too. Tonight’s game was why he signed Qualls for 2 years — runner on 1st, nobody out, 7th inning, 2 run lead, need the double play ball. But Walt doesn’t trust Qualls. I get that. I don’t trust… Read more »

Sounds like we have a RWO contest on our hands! Let’s give the Qualls/Motte/McGee threesome a name. The Three Stooges? The not-Nasty Brothers? The Golden Girls? Kerosene, Match, and Fire? Ag…..Carasiti is an intriguing dude for sure. IMO…..we’re seeing the Monfort side of the tightrope Bridich has to walk. It certainly appears Monfort is giving Bridich some leeway, but he’s also imposing the “we’ve got money to spend and maybe just maybe we can contend so go sign Qualls, Motte,… Read more »

BTW – are you guys and girls keeping up with German Marquez? For some reason, I feel like he’s the one “close” pitcher in the system that is still somewhat under the radar. Unlike Freeman (so far)……….he’s got an out pitch that may just play at the Major League level and can miss bats on a regular basis.

Who is this guy Joseph? Only a backup to washed up Howard at 1B? Good grief.

Need to call up any hitter just to shake up the lineup.

Former Catcher with some promise but too many concussions, so had to learn a new position ala John Jaso.

Pinch me. I sat slumped in my chair with no hope for offense. Wolters gets 2-out hit and I’m like terrible timing with pitcher up. Whaaattt???? It was a 2-run homer by a AA pitcher. Oooooio….that’s great to boost the Rockies offense.

More than anything, Anderson is a good looking all-around athlete.

Now I’m thinking Lyles get 3-inning save and the fireworks will be much more enjoyable.

Going back to Ag’s earlier comments regarding the 3 Stooges (Qualls, Motte, McGee)……..we could have (potentially) gotten more mileage from Lyles, Butler, and Rusin in the Pen from day #1 and had 15M in disposable income to put towards a big bat.

DISCLAIMER – the above statement isn’t an “I told you so.” I wanted Lyles and Rusin in the starting rotation.

Eff the Phillies and let’s do it again tomorrow. Wasn’t tonight Andersons first career win? Worth something for my attendance tonight. At least I got to see his first and maybe only career HR.

Benchmark:

Looking at the Brad Ziegler (low end Closer) to Red Sox trade. DBacks get A level pitcher with some promise and low A level infielder not highly regarded. Keep this in mind when thinking of return for Boone Logan. Logan obviously isn’t a Closer, but he’s LHed. I think netting an A level Propsect with some promise is the likely return.

RMH, the tide has turned – your presence at Coors is now officially a good luck charm. Lyles: he has looked good coming out of the pen. Plus he’s still cost-controlled for (I think) 2 more years. So when we talk about the purposes the rest of this season will serve, a big one is “who will be on this club in 2017? In 2018?” And Lyles is still trying out for a job. So that’s all the more reason… Read more »
