The Colorado Rockies continue their coastal cruise in the fine south California breezes of San Diego this Monday evening, tripping along a tick below even-steven at 6-7.  They spent the week changing-out players in-between taking 2 out of 3 from the Chicago White Sox in an inter-league series at Coors Field, then headed to San Francisco, where the Giants bested them twice.

Prized off-season acquisition Boone Logan was activated before Monday’s 8-1 shellacking of Chicago behind a strong start by Jordan Lyles, with outfielder Corey Dickerson losing the round of musical chairs. Highly respected right-hander Wilton Lopez pitched his way off the club on Tuesday after giving-up 6 in 2/3 of an 8th inning, giving way to back-up infielder Josh Rutledge.

The DLR drama continued in the 4th inning on Friday in San Francisco, when with 2 outs and the bases loaded the prickly left-hander served-up the olde gopher ball to feared slugger Madison Bumgarner on a pitch not called by Wilin Rosario.  However, Jordan Pacheco is NOT De La Rosa’s personal catcher.  Drew Goodman told me that.

Saturday provided an uplifting victory when Brett Anderson went-down with a bruised finger after batting in the top of the 4th, and Tommy Kahnle, Matt Belisle, Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins delivered 6 shut-out innings of relief for a 1-0 win behind an RBI double by Troy Tulowitzki.  On Sunday the other extra infielder, Charlie Culberson, caught a plane back to Colorado Springs when Tyler Chatwood was activated for the start.

The new cast takes on the Padres for 4 starting tonight before heading back to Denver to open up a 3-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.  It’s Lyles (2-0, 3.86) on again on Monday, facing San Diego’s Eric Stults (0-2, 5.59), one of those lefties that give Colorado fits.  Stults pitched into the 6th against Cleveland on Wednesday, taking the loss in a 2-0 Indians’ win.  Lyles pitched into the 7th against the White Sox, surrendering only a run, on 5 hits, 2 walks and 4 strike-outs.

Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss has shuffled his “set” lineup a bit.  The notorious Rosario moves-up to the 5-hole and Justin Morneau hits 6th.  Bud Black has Everth Cabrera leading-off, Alexi Amarista hitting 2nd, and the dearly rued and beloved Seth Smith batting 3rd in left field.

Game time’s 8:10 MDT.  The weather is SoCal benign with temperatures in the high 60°s, wind drifting-in from left at 4-7 mph, and 58% humidity reinforcing the “marine layer.”  Drew and George Frazier have the call on ROoT, and Jerry and Jack are on 850 KOA am.

Eric Stults career year-by-year: Sucked Really Sucked Kind of OK in 7 starts Sucked Didn’t Pitch Really Sucked in 12 innings as a Rockie Pretty Good! Kind of Average Which brings us to 2014. Is he suddenly that coveted specimen, the league-average lefty starter? Or were the last couple years a mirage? He’s 34, he really shouldn’t stop sucking at this age. He shuts lefties down pretty well (.219 BA career) which is what kept him in the league through… Read more »

Great summary of the week, Jeem.

Note that Brett Anderson was put on DL and Corey Dickerson was recalled tonight.

Patrick Saunders is now the #1 Rockies beat reporter as Troy Renck is now doing his favorite sport, football. Saunders start his first day as #1 by showing he will continue the DP sports section tradition of at least 1 error per day. He said that with Corey Dickerson being recalled the Rockies now have 5 outfielders. Actually Patrick 5 + 1 = 6. You gotta use two hands: Cargo, Blackmon, Cuddyer, Dickerson, Stubbs and Barnes makes six. But other… Read more »

Does Brothers have options left? He needs to get straightened out. And quickly. And it shouldn’t be at the expense of the ML club. You see why he grooved one yesterday. Otherwise he can’t get it over. Terrible 2 runs on no hits. And I don’t blame Rosario. It’s on Rex. 2nd point. There is a reason why pitching coaches go out to the mound when a pinch-hitter comes up. Especially with a young pitcher and a young catcher. Go… Read more »

Rex Brothers and Chad Bettis both have three options remaining. Zero has one option. Everybody else none, except Kahnle who has 3 but we cannot option a Rule 5 pick unless he is offered back to Yankees. If we keep Kahnle on the active roster the whole year, then we can option him if needed in 2015 and later.
