Sadly, the season opener wasn’t an April Fool’s Joke on fans. We’ve become accustom to getting beat, but getting killed on opening day is worse than normal. Thankfully, as they say, it is only 1 of 162 games and there really is nowhere to go but up…or down further…not sure that’s what they say, but there you go…
Marc Stout sent along some of his STOUTISTICS for the Marlins series:
A year ago JHOULYS CHACIN and JORGE DeLaROSA had bookend wins during a 3 game weekend series in late August in Miami.
In between the Friday and Saturday wins, NL Rookie of the Year Jose Fernandez tossed 7 shutout innings against the good guys; the Marlins won the game 3-0.
It was one of the 12 times in 2013 that COLORADO was shut-out.
Miami lost 100 games a season ago, finishing 34 games back of the Braves in the NL East.
COLORADO lost 88 games in 2013 and finished 18 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West.
The Marlins won 4 of 7 games against the ROCKIES.
Miami had a winning record against COL (4-3), DET (3-0), KC (2-1), MINN (3-1), the Mets (11-8), and SF (4-3).
Despite a better overall record, the ROCKIES had a winning mark against only 5 teams.
All time record-wise, the Marlins hold a 87-84 advantage between these two 1995 expansion teams.
The ROCKIES had a winning record in Miami last year for just the 5th time.
COLORADO is 3-3 in 6 games at marlins Park, which opened in 2012.
The ROX are 11-10 on opening day; 6 of the 11 wins have come on the road.
The team is 12-9 in it’s HOME openers at Coors Field.
JORGE DeLaROSA will become the 16th different ROCKIES’ pitcher to start on opening day.
Those with multiple opening day starts are:
KEVIN RITZ (’96/’97)
DARRYL KILE (’98/’99)
MIKE HAMPTON (’01/’02)
JASON JENNINGS (’03/’06)
AARON COOK (’07/’09)
UBALDO JIMENEZ (’10/’11)
JORGE is 5-4 in 11 games (10 starts) against the Marlins; 1-2 in games @Miami.
DeLaROSA has pitched well in the months of March and April (14-8/3.47ERA in 40 games /24 starts).
The ROCKIES went 16-11 in April last year.
It was the 7th time the ball club had a winning mark in March/April.
All-time, COLORADO is 233-251 in March/April.
This will be the 2nd time the team has played it’s first game on 3/31:
3/31/98 @ AZ – 9-2 win to open up the then Bank One Ballpark.
DARRYL KILE beat Andy Benes.
LANSING, BURKS, WALKER, BICHETTE, CASTILLA, and HELTON combined to go 13 for 27 (.480) with 2 HR’s (…both by Vinny), 2 doubles (…both by Helton), 7 runs, and 9 RBI’s.
A few player notes:
Despite a .229 career batting average against the Marlins, CARGO has 5 home runs vs Fla/Mia.
MICHAEL CUDDYER led the NL with a .337 batting average in 2013.
The Marlins were 1 of 9 teams he hit .350 or better against (.375).
CUDDY did NOT hit 2nd in the batting order last year.
TROY TULOWITZKI has 20 or more more RBI’s against 11 teams in his career.
He has 24 vs. the Marlins.
LaTROY HAWKINS has 101 career saves, none as a ROCKIE – (44 w/MIN, 29 w/CHC, 12 w/HOU, 13 w/NYM, 2 w/SFG, and 1 with the Angels).
There are 2 teams LaTROY HAWKINS does not have a SAVE vs. in his career; Minnesota and the Giants.
