A few thoughts about tonight and the past few years- !) Rockies, at least since Weiss has been manager and probably before, have no killer instinct. They get a two or three run lead and they shut it down. 2) When Rockies signed Parra I thought it was a great move although most of the comments I saw didn’t agree with me. I remember when he played for the DBacks he seemed to always get key hits and make great… Read more »

Bill, some really perceptive comments there. You’re right — a series of bone-headed plays lately including multiple ones from Parra + DJ’s idiotic attempt at stealing 3B with 2 outs, and do we see anyone sit the next day? Maybe it is time for more of the law and order type manager. Usually that’s all you can do in baseball when you change managers: swap out a nice guy/”players manager” for a hardass or vice versa. And sometimes it works.… Read more »

Don’t forget Trevor Story’s inability to start or complete a double play almost every time one should be made.

WARNING – Broken Record Comments Below: 1. Butler is a serviceable, perhaps even very solid RP waiting to happen. Otherwise, as Ag notes, he’s not a Major League player. 2. Weiss (as noted by virtually everyone) – isn’t a Major League Manager. We need a “rebuild compatible” Manager. 3. Bill – I like your comment #3 as well. This is a business. These guys are paid handsomely to perform. They don’t have to like their Manager. 4. Ag – Jorge’s… Read more »

To me…..one of the most important things for a post TJ pitcher’s longevity is to become efficient. Chatwood has gotten the message. Outstanding outing.

I’ve tried three times to post a long-ish one. The website is deeply flawed, unfortunately (sorry Jared) – slow slow, and comments disappear when you click wrong somewhere in the comment box, and why do I get randomly logged out. I will try again somehow to say: Chatwood, good on ya. Maybe you are finally proving your promise. And the team is not terrible (our low bar)!

Oh my……the mighty Yardgoats gave Licas Giolitta and Harrisburg a 9-3 beat down. David Dahl was 1 for 5 batting leadoff. Stole his 9th base. Another solid start for Musgrave. Meanwhile, Brendan Joe Dort Rodgers hit 3 doubles today as well.

Okay, Wolters is not hitting very well right now but the Rockies are 7-3 when Wolters catches. When Hundley catches they are 6-8 and when Garneau was carching they were 0-3. I strongly believe that Wolters should be the starting catcher instead of Hundley.

Carp, if the photos are updated it looks like Brendan Rogers dropped the Joe Dirt mullet! And suddenly started looking like one of the best prospects in baseball. Coincidence? I think not. Jon Gray, pay attention!

Timely comment. The folks at Purple Row have been debating a nickname. “BRod” has come up……but seems a bit lame.

The kid is the most elite Prospect in the system. Going back to one of my frequent “broken record” comments – I think the real way to rank farm systems is by “difference makers.” I define a difference maker as a future regular all-star. BRod is a difference maker.

Ag – on a serious note – I was so impressed when we got all of our draft choices signed so quickly last summer. I think getting the High School kids to Grand Junction for a month or two is invaluable. Not from a baseball sense, but from the “I’m away from Mom and have to fend for myself sense.” Guys that rate Prospects and look at from those couple of months are ridiculous. Being 18 and moving from the… Read more »

Call me crazy – but I’m excited to see Chris Rusin pitch tonight. I don’t expect to see a “great” performance. I do expect that he’ll work quickly and throw strikes. That should give the Rox offense a chance.
Tangentially – Jordan Lyles got ROCKED earlier today in Sacramento. 2 2/3 IP, 10H, 11R.

Well, my Rusin analysis for the game was a…….FAIL.

But, I clearly forgot that we’re in NoDo’s favorite Ballpark. So it’s all good. We’ll be seeing the Giant’s “big 3” pitchers through the weekend, so it was good to get this one. Why was Hundley scratched at the last minute?

Other notes – Motte is throwing live BP. Castro near rehab assignment.

Carp, that was a major fail on Rusin. (I should’ve doubted your crystal ball after the “I feel a John Kasich surge coming” last month) He was actually worse than Matt Cain. But … nobody will remember! The glory of a 13 run inning will do that. Minors: it’s been a long time since I regularly checked minor league box scores. But some of our prospects have me doing it again. ABQ? Is Hoffman pitching? Gotta check. Hartford? Gotta check… Read more »

I think you have me mixed up with someone else regarding the John Kasich comment. Don’t get me started there! My Asheville peeps correctly warned me a few weeks ago about the impending DRod nuclear attack. They’re saying equally awesome things about this Brian Mundell kid who is just exploding onto the scene. You might want to start following him as well. He’s got a tremendous built-in advantage – there’s basically no one in his way in the entire system… Read more »

Carp, just kidding on the Kasich comment. I know that wasn’t you — I was just trying to think up the worst predictions I’ve heard from any source recently. Mundell is kind of interesting, but right now we can’t tell whether he’s succeeding in Low A by the “man among boys” factor (guy is 22, listed at 6’3″, 230 – compare that to the Corelle Prime types who are just starting to fill out) or if there’s really something there.… Read more »

Ramos is in Modesto. Mundell is old for the low A level. As far as I can tell, he may have actually completed his collegiate eligibility prior to entering the draft. Speaking of “draft,” it’s coming up – June 6th or 9th or something like that. There’s been a little bit of chaos at the top of the draft. At this time last year – draft-niks were touting 7 potential #1 picks for this (16) draft and consistently noted how… Read more »

One thing I know – don’t throw out political opinions in a public forum. So I’ll attempt to walk the tightrope here. I’ll confess that I’ve been fascinated by the utter chaos and dysfunction that has been the Republican Primary season. More than once I’ve thought about crafting a resume as a strategist and sending it to some of these guys (or lady) because I have to be better than what they have (had). On the one hand it’s comical.… Read more »

A 14 run lead and all you need to do is get through one more inning and you get the win. And Rusin couldn’t do it. Very disappointing. I went to bed as soon as the fifth was over so didn’t see if we used any other pitchers than Bergman to not be able to use during the series. Long work hours yesterday and today and long enough tomorrow and won’t be able to watch or listen to much of… Read more »

Just for shits and giggles – coming on the brutal news that Halos ace (sort of) Garrett Richards in next in line for TJ surgery – hypothetical question:

Would you trade Dahl, Senzatela, Wall, and maybe Freeland or similar for Mike Trout?

Carp — Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes. Trout is still only 24! The way they worked his extension, he comes in way under market this year and next (15 and 19 million bucks – hard to imagine, but that is way under market), then he hits (gulp!) 33 million bucks a year through his age 28 season. So you get tons of surplus value for this season and the next, followed by what still is (now) a market rate for… Read more »

For those interested in the amateur draft – Purple Row has an article by a couple of their regular writers that is really a mock draft for the first 10 teams picking. They each make a pick for each team with an accompanying brief discussion. You’ll get an idea of the names the Rockies (and other teams with high picks) will be considering. Sort of parallel to this, there’s some interesting discussions being kicked around regarding teams at the top… Read more »
