Happy Birthday Giambino…

Jason Giambi will celebrate his 42nd birthday today. Here are some random stats to celebrate his storied MLB career.

FYI – GIAMBI was granted free agency by the Rockies on 10/29/12…he had been candidate for the team’s managerial position.

His career estimated earnings to date according to Baseball-Reference.com…

$132,808,996

-Colorado paid Jason an estimated $3,750,000.

-Giambi was paid an estimated $749,00 by OAK from ’95-’98.

-The next 3 years the A’s paid Jason an estimated $9.3 plus million.

-Giambi signed with the Yankees in 2001 after winning the AL MVP in 2000.

-The 1st year of Jason’s NYY contract paid him more than the previous 3 seasons:

$10,428,571.

-Giambi’s total earnings with NYY amounted to more than an estimated $116,000,000.

Originally drafted by the BREWERS in the 43RD ROUND in June of 1989, Jason did not sign.

He attended Long Beach State University.

2 other significant players were drafted in that SAME 43RD ROUND in 1989;

JORGE POSADA, as a SS, by NYY (he was later picked by NYY in the 24th round of the 1990 draft out of a CC in Decatur, AL)

AND,

ERIC YOUNG, as an OF, by LAD, from his Rutgers University in his home state if NJ.

EY signed with the Dodgers and was then selected by COL in the ’92 expansion draft.

(Sidenote: EY JR was a 30TH ROUND pick of COL in June of 2003).

Oakland picked GIAMBI in the 2nd round of the 1992 draft.

The A’s missed on RHP Benji Grigsby out of San Diego State with the 20th pick in ’92’s first round.

Grigsby went 19-23 in his minor league career.

Some of the top picks in the 1992 1st round include:

NYY – DEREK JETER (6th)

KCR – JOHNNY DAMON (35th)

PITT – JASON KENDALL (23rd)

COL – RHP JOHN BURKE from Cherry Creek HS and the University of Florida in the 1st round of the 1992 June draft with the 27th pick.

The A’s hit on Jason in the 2nd round…the same round in which SD picked an OF named TODD HELTON; Todd did not sign and went to Tennessee.

The Rockies picked RHP MARK THOMPSON in that same 2nd round.

GIAMBI has made his mark as a HR hitter.

His 429 career HR’s are 43RD ALL TIME.

A breakdown follows:

1 HR in 18 different seasons from 1995-2012; (43 in 2000 high/1 in 2012 low)

215 HOME

214 AWAY

322 vs RHP

107 vs RHP

350 1 HR games

38 2 HR games

1 3 HR games (…as a Rockie on 5/19/11 @ PHI)

Jason has hit AT LEAST 1 HR in all 9 spots of the batting order.

210 homers…hitting 3rd in the order…is the MOST.

1 home run, hitting officially 1st and 9th in the order, is the LEAST – both were pinch hit homers.

ROCKIES fans will appreciate that GIAMBI’S lone HR while hitting in the LEAD OFF spot was a PINCH HIT walk off 2 run HR off of Boston’s Jonathan Papelbon on 6/23/10 @ Coors Field;

he was pinch hitting for JONATHAN HERRERA in the lead off spot.

219 solo homers

127 – 2 run homers

69 – 3 run homers

14 GRAND SLAMS (…Jason is 1 of 18 players to have hit 14 or more SLAMS in MLB history…)

Some of his HR highlights include:

#1 off of TOR rhp DAVID CONE (who thew a perfect game on 7/18/99 w/NYY)

#429 off of LAD lhp SCOTT ELBERT (…a 3 run game winning bottom of the 9th pinch hit walk off HR)

209 w/NYY

198 w/OAK

22 w/COL

He has homered in 30 ballparks: (115 @ Oak/95 @ Yankee Stadium/14 @ Coors Field)

He has homered against 29 opponents…the ONLY team he has not homered against is HOU;

30 + off of these teams:

TEX-37

BOS-36

TOR-36

DET-34

TB -31

KCR-31

(most vs NL opp is 8-AZ and SD)

He has hit 6 HR’s off of TIM BELCHER; the most vs any pitcher.

Some of my other favorite career GIAMBI stats are:

1.) Has 1968 career hits; Giambi was born in 1971.

2.) ONLY 33 PLAYERS HAVE MORE THAN HIS 1334 CAREER WALKS: 21 are in the HOF…others NOT in the HOF include Bonds, Rose, Thome, F Thomas, Chipper…
