…Hello Morneau

The other shoe has dropped.

The Rockies front offices big salary moving plan of bundling up Dex and a PTBNL and sending them to Houston for a couple of nobodies nobody wants has culminated in the monetary value of putting it all on black 32.

Colorado has picked up the replacement for Helton and his name is Justin Morneau.

Yep, that Morneau.

The very same guy that hit .260 last season between being a Pirate and finishing out his time with the Twins.  Morneau is 32 and hasn’t had a +20 HR season in four years.

What’s worse is he can’t seem to swing at pitches slung from southpaws.

His .207 average against lefties last year was bad, even for him.

The trade of injury prone Fowler was supposed to bring in a big time player, but Morneau will arrive with bedpan in tow as he’s battled his own injuries in herniated disc’s and concussions.

What do you expect? This is the Rockies we’re talking about. So, let me take the high road. Unfortunately it sounds like the kind of high we can legally experience after January 1. I always liked Dex, but we have been waiting for his breakout season for about 3 or 4 years. It never came. Once he got married to a beautiful, delightful and dynamic woman, I got the impression he was more into shoes than winning baseball. Not her… Read more »

Somebody please pass me the vodka. I’m jumping on the Charlie liquor boat. Everything is going backwards. Let me stay passed out until we have new ownership and upper management.

I must say this is the first year I’ve given up on the Rocks before June. Before Spring Training! I’m done as a fan until the Front office is gone. Tulo and Cargo must be really depressed.

Because I’m kind of naturally an optimist (really!) I can’t help but look at the best case scenario. There is something to what Renck has been saying, that Morneau is still an effective power hitter vs. righties. But this will require O’Dowd and Geivett to keep a foot on Weiss’s neck. Morneau has been almost laughably awful against lefties not just last season but for several seasons. Morneau may start well. He may get a key hit off a lefty.… Read more »

It is just my opinion but I think that you are giving Weiss too much credit for things that I do not believe that management gives him the power to control. I truly believe that Weiss is not much more than a figure head and that even the line up is decided on by upper management and not by Weiss.

Bob K., I fear you’re right. And I also fear that I misread Renck’s comment suggesting that Morneau would be a good/affordable platoon player. I’m guessing the plan really is to play Morneau full time at 1B and to platoon Barnes with Blackmon/Dickerson in LF. That is, unless they pull another righthanded bat out of their collective butts.

$6.5 for Morneau seems like an overpayment to me. They are definately going to shoehorn him against lefties. Can’t afford that for a platoon.

After posting last night I came to the realization that this is simply trading Fowler for Morneau. With a few spare parts coming and going. Salaries are close to the same, abundance of OF on the team, no clear choice at 1B before the ‘trade’. Looking at it in that context, it’s really a whole lot of nothing. Just hope Justin can be the defensive 1B we’ve been talking about to pick those throws from Tulo and Nolan. So, in… Read more »

Yup, same thing I was thinking. But I think Dex is probably a better player than Justin. But Justin is new and shiny to draw in the fans. (Hey, look everyone! The Rox signed a new shiny guy, let’s go to the old ball park and see him play!!!!) Gievett even said as much, trading Dex was not a salary dump, they just needed to clear some bucks so they could sign a new shiny guy. They do this every… Read more »

I think you’re right that this was, in essence, about Fowler for Morneau.

This is another complete failure of the O’Dowd era: no one in the wings to take over for Todd at first, so they are forced to go dumpster diving in a market management claims it can’t afford.

You guys are right. It works out as Dex for Morneau, Astros throw in Lyles and Barnes. Now everyone (other than our friend Ego and O’Dowd) would agree the Dex for Morneau straight up would have been a bad deal for us. Even without getting into performance, Morneau is 4 years older and is one good shot to the head from being unable to play again, period. And now we’re committed to pay him for 2 years whereas Dex (who’s… Read more »

I’ve been poor mouthing the Rox a lot lately……but I’m not as down on Morneau as some of you appear to be (and I understand why you’re down on him). He did flash some semblance of his former self for a period last August/ early September. He will be entering his 3rd season after his concussion misadventures. He is still “only” 32. The fact is……..he’s relatively cheap (by current market standards – which at the end of the day is… Read more »

Best Rockies’ moment since 2007 was when Dex saved U’s no-hitter with a spectacular catch. I’ll miss Dexter’s magic in the outfield. Maybe I’ll get satellite radio and be a Pirates fan in 2014.

Really it is a three for one deal adding Lyles, Barnes & Morneaux to the roster for the depth that we lacked in 2013 – I like the deal but will definitely miss Dexter!

Maybe the Rox could trade Tulo or Cargo for Clint Barmes (who hits .270 against LHP) and he could be Morneau’s platoon partner.

I like it. And since Barmes is a former Rox, it will probably happen….

When I first saw Renck’s tweet about the trade I read Barnes as Barmes and thought isn’t it just like the Rox to take back one more old washed up guy.

Dex was definitely a better player than the current Morneau. Trade was a downgrade. Don’t know about a nickname for Morneau but do have one for the front office’s reign: “More? no!”.

So…what Mgt has done so far this offseason as of this point equals a new 1B avg at best, lossing a decent leadoff hitter while downgrading our defense in Center, re-signing a old RP and named him closer, adding possibley a 5th type starter, TBD to the rotation. Built a great PARTY DECK. WE gotta keep Charlie outta here! Plus Coors dumped their shares of the Rockies they held for 4.5 million…Wow, future is so bright I got to wear… Read more »

I think this sign could work in our favor. In fact, more so than it could hurt us. However, there must be another move (obviously) to piggy back this one to get more pitching which will likely mean giving up prospects for someone who has slightly proven themselves but has been thrown off course by injury. Brett Anderson was a good idea but it seems like that wont happen now. Sometimes I feel like it’s going to take giving up… Read more »

Morrison has been one to think about for a while, but he is the complete antithesis of what the Rockies look for in a player. I can’t think of a player more opposite to what O’Dowd wants.

True. Possibly a fresh start with a new club will help him. It’s never good to have to file a grievance against your team and I’m sure there is bad blood between them and if we treated him better his attitude might change. Another intriguing target would be Brett Gardner. He could man CF or LF and would solve our leadoff search. We would have to give up likely a second baseman though. Lots of teams interested in Andrew Bailey… Read more »

How come if we had 60 million for McCann or Abreau we can’t compete for Granderson or Nicascio?
