Helton Arrested for DUI

Todd Helton “exercised poor judgement” as he took to the road drunk and ended up arrested.

The team released a statement saying,

We were extremely disappointed to learn that Todd was arrested this morning. This type of behavior is taken very seriously by our organization. We know that he clearly understands the seriousness of his poor decision, the harm that could have been inflicted on others and the embarrassment his mistake has caused to himself, his family, the Colorado Rockies organization and to Major League Baseball.

Todd is taking full accountability for his actions with his family, his fans and the organization. The man we have grown to know has strong values that are grounded in his family and hard work. Todd clearly understands the severity of the situation.

Helton issued a statement saying:

Last evening I exercised poor judgment and was charged with drinking and driving after driving to a gas station near my house. I am very sorry and embarrassed by my actions. I hold myself to a high standard and take my responsibility as a public figure very seriously. My entire career I have worked to set a positive example for my family and in our community and I fell far short of this standard.

I sincerely ask my family, the Colorado Rockies Organization, Major League Baseball and the community to accept my apology. I make no excuses and accept full responsibility for my actions. I humbly ask your forgiveness.

Well if he needs a lawyer he can find one on Roxwalkoff. Sad note to end a career, but maybe he will learn after 1.

So much for the Rox brass wanting a clubhouse full of Christians and alter boys. I’m certain one reason they gave up on Alex White so quickly was because of his DUI last spring.

You think Christians are incapable of getting DUI’s?

*Shaking my head*.

Looks like the “grand retirement tour” during the season will be swept under the rug.

Obviously I don’t know the story and the media seems quick to press without all the details but I do find a couple of interesting things … if accurate. An anonymous phone call and he wasn’t driving or even behind the wheel when police arrived?

The story I’m reading is that he was driving erractically which was reported by an anonymous caller. The police found him at the gas station. To the best of my knowledge, he would be charged with DUI only if the field test is above .08 BAC. I do not know if he started to get in his truck when police stopped him or they stopped him while he was inside convenience store. You have no defense of “my friend was… Read more »

He does, however, win some sort of award for the worst celebrity mugshot since Nick Nolte’s.

My biggest concern is how out of shape he’s in. Just kidding.

Does look fat though.

Showed my wife the mug shot and the first thing she said was “he looks like a porker!”

Wow. That mugshot is classic. I guess we won’t be hearing the “best shape of his life” stories about Todd when spring training opens. I like Helton. I’d love to see him go out in style playing a part time role this year. But really: dude’s made $156,490,000 in his career (from baseballreference). I promise you that as soon as I make my first $100 million I will build a carriage house for my full-time, 24/7 driver. Hell, I’ll even… Read more »

Never mind. Just googled it. Long time since I’ve seen him without a beard. I’ll be interested to hear the “real” story.

Nobody is perfect people. I still have the same amount of respect for Todd that I had before this incident.

LOTTERY TICKETS???????? Ol Todd must feel insecure about his retirement savings.

I also noticed that Todd looks a little chubby in the mug shot. Mugg Shots are never flatering but I hope Todd has put himself in position to have a successful year.

DUI is not drunk. Driving Under the Influence. How many of you have had a couple beers, then driven? Depending upon the brand, those two beers would put you over the legal limit. This thing man not even make it to court so we may never know what his level was. Being a first time offender, it’s possible that even if it does get to a judge, he’ll get a reduced penalty and community service. All that being said, it’s… Read more »

I’ve been really bugged by a lot of the comments I’ve read on twitter and heard on the radio regarding this Todd Helton situation. And BTW these comments would bug me just the same if it were Joe Schmoe construction worker in this story, just that no one would be talking about it if that were the case. Hanging out at home drinking, listening to music, maybe the internet, video games, whatever. Wife gave up and went to bed long… Read more »

Ike, I haven’t been hearing people who are ready to crucify Helton. In fact, it seems like most people — although they recognize the dangers of drunk driving — see a lot of humor in what a fool Helton made of himself. Everything from the mug shot, to the lottery tickets (you’ve got to be kidding me) to the “washing my truck” and “igloo cups of wine” stories that the wasted Helton somehow thought would make the cops cut him… Read more »

Not sure what the initial conversation between Todd and the arresting officer went like, but why didn’t he just keep his mouth shut and not answer any questions? My understanding is he wasn’t behind the wheel when the officer confronted him. It isn’t illegal to be under the influence while standing outside or inside a convenience store. At that point what do they charge him with? He than goes out and gets himself Harvey Steinberg to represent him and the… Read more »

I haven’t been a Todd Helton fan for the last 4 or 5 years or so. I think he’s a great defensive 1B and a solid singles and doubles guy. But you don’t pay that kind of player the kind of money they do to play defense and get singles and doubles. However I think too many people are getting on him too much for making this human error. He drank too much wine and he shouldn’t be driving and… Read more »

nor was he behind the wheel,in his vehicle,or actually on a public throughfare at the time of his arrest.Doesn’t absolve his behavoir but I will bet it will be legally relevent to the final disposition of his case.

Help me out here guys. The way I see it, Todd’s salary may be far too high for his current production in recent years, but isn’t that really because the Rockies are in a sense back paying him for earlier service? If I remember right, when he signed his long term contract he took below top market dollar for the short term to get a longer term contract with a lot of the money pushed back to the later years.… Read more »
