Here’s an Extra 0 For Your $260M

Ahhh, the simple pleasures in life. The little things.

Like…

  • Watching Jeff Francis pitch five excellent innings of shutout ball, striking out six and only giving up three hits to get the win.
  • Putting up 7 runs in one inning against your most hated* NL West rivals (*per RWO Poll), on the way to shutting them out for the second time in the past four games.
  • Watching Chris Nelson *almost* hit for the cycle (just a HR shy)
  • Knowing it was a  white-hot Josh Rutledge two-run pinch-hit that finally chased Beckett from the game
  • Watching Tyler Colvin put a dent in the 2nd deck back wall with his crushed a 457 ft. HR off of Mr. Josh Beckett leading off the first.
  • Seeing Johnny Sparkplug go 3-4, almost decapitating Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen
  • Witnessing Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen give up four earned in 2/3’s of an inning
  • The beauty that is Matt Kemp smashing into the outfield wall, sans ball, as tyler Colvin crushes a two-run triple
  • The 21st home run by Baby Bull Wilin Rosario to cap off the seven run eighth

and finally…

  • Being the lead story on ESPN as the world asked the question: what does a quarter of a billion get you nowadays?

Beautiful night at the ballpark. Great game and victory. It feels like the guys are playing with real passion and joy.

Sweet headline!

My whipping boy Wilin is looking much better behind the plate. Well, one bad throw Monday, but still…

Great game. It’s been a long time since I’ve made that statement. The boys were back at it last might. Only hope it continues. Great weather made for a perfect evening at the ballpark.

It was indeed a great game, certainly looking forward to being in Denver on Saturday to see the new kids in person. Sure won’t be the same team I watched on opening day in Houston!

Dare I say it, but Josh Rutledge is reminding me of a right-handed version of a young Chase Utley. Also, Wilin is putting up Johnny Bench type numbers. We are seeing a lot of progress with the youth on this team. It’s a very small sample size and there is no pennant race pressure, but if these guys can continue to develop/sustain then this team has a much, much brighter future than we thought a couple of months ago. Of… Read more »

There was a great discussion on MLB last night about this game. First, how Wilin should be in the mix for Rookie of the Year based on his hitting, but how he won’t be because of Coors (Harold Reynolds). And second, how the 4 man with a piggy back is a bad idea because no starter would ever want to pitch here (Dan Plesac). His point is that winning is the most important thing, but it still is a game… Read more »

Problem with that, Mr. Reynolds, is that while he has hit 13 homers in 157 AB’s at home and 8 homers in 125 AB’s on the road, he is hitting .256 on the road and .236 at home. The other splits are all fairly close, so I’m trying to figure out where the Coors Field factor comes in. Given the kind of offensive numbers put up in new parks like Philly and Cincy, I fail to see the relevance of… Read more »

Harold Reynolds was dismissing the Coors factor. It was refreshing to see someone say, hey, it’s a big league ball park like all the others; it shouldn’t matter.

Thanks for clearing that up, Tom. From the earlier post I thought he was making the Coors Field argument.

and on the other point, we’ve gone over and over that same ground – about pitchers not wanting to come here because it will kill their W-L stats, so it is nice to see them catch up to the conversation!

I totally agree with Dan. Jare has pointed it out several times. I wanted to give him a 100 thumbs up for one of his posts. It’s already tough for the Rockies to get pitchers to come here. Now with the current … “whatever” … it will be even harder. I’m glad they went back to a 5 man rotation.

good points everyone. As we all know, the last 3 weeks the starting pitching has improved and so has our win total. Not too hard to figure out. You can bet that free agent pitchers are looking at their incentive clauses in their contracts as well as their ability to negotiate a better contract when the time comes. Lack of the ability to secure a win if their pitch count climbs doesn’t give you much say in the market value.… Read more »

I do root for the Rams to beat the Buffs, if that makes you happy. Actually, my favorite football team is the Colorado Mines Orediggers! They have really come around in the last decade. Of course, this is where you learn that I graduated from there back in the day (’77) when we couldn’t win more than the Homecoming game every year.

Rosario and Johnny Bench? Let’s not get carried away yet. Yes, Rosario can hit but Bench was a great defensive catcher in addition to being great with the bat. Rosario is getting better but behind the plate he barely adequate. And part of the problem we’ve had with our pitchers is because of Rosario’s D or lack thereof. Not just the passed balls and/or wild pitches but the lack of confidence in throwing some of those sliders or not throwing… Read more »

I didn’t say Wilin was up to par with Bench, of course, but his offensive power numbers this early in his career are top rate, especially given how few games he’s played.
