The Washington Nationals have been big news lately, but more for who’s off the field as opposed to what they are doing on it. Today saw a pic tweeted of Bryce Harper at the airport with a massive leg brace after his 2nd opinion appointment. It goes without saying he won’t be taking the field tonight. Nor will Strasburg, thankfully, as he is on the DL and not slated to return to active duty until June 16th.
That’s the good news.
The bad news (or possibly good news, based on your feelings) is that Edgmer Escalona has been placed on the 15-day DL and Josh Outman is back in the show. Outman, who was sent down on Saturday to make room for Francis, will hopefully take up where he left off with pitching effective relief for a pen that is straining at the seams. The Rockies split the four-game series with the Padres, both of the Rox wins coming via the walk–off.
Tonight’s game is also the fifth game on the Rox current 11-day, 10-game home stand. After the Nationals the Philies will come into town for three. Yesterday was the Rockies first day off since 5/23, which is one of just two off days in the month of June (also 6/24). The team will enter today’s game 20-14 at home this season, including 4-2 at home vs. National League East opponents. the Rockies have yet to play a road game vs. NL East this season.
• RHP Jhoulys Chacin will make his 12th start of the season tonight. This will be Chacin’s fourth career start against the Nationals, first since 2011. he is 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA (17.0 ip, 10 er) in his career against the Nationals.
• RHP Dan Haren will make his 13th start of the season tonight. This will be Haren’s 15th career start against the Rockies, and 9th career start at Coors Field. he is 5-2 with a 4.10 ERA (52.2 ip, 24 er) in his 8 outings at Coors.
