Last week the San Diego Padres swept the Pirates and the Diamondbacks. Earlier this week they took 2 of 3 from Atlanta. And last night the Colorado Rockies came-up one-short of San Diego in the opener of a 3-game weekend set between NL West rivals. They turn to recently re-activated right-hander Jhoulys Chacin (1-4, 5.55) for tonight’s 6:10 contest at Coors Field in Denver. The Padres will counter with their own righty, Edinson Volquez (9-9, 4.10).
Chacin will be making his third start since returning from a nerve impingement. He’s allowed only two runs in 11 late August innings. On Sunday against Chicago Chacin lasted 5 as the Rockies were shut-out 5-0. Volquez got a win Sunday at Arizona. He went 7, surrendered 2 runs on 4 hits and struck-out 7.
Alex White labored for 3 2/3 innings on Friday for Colorado, leaving the Rockies behind 3-1. San Diego got additional runs in the fifth and eighth. Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin had back-to-back doubles in the fifth, and Cameron Maybin hit a freak double that bounced off Colorado 2nd-baseman DJ LeMahieu into right-field in the eighth and scored three batters later on a two-out infield single by pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia that Josh Rutledge could not corral. The Rockies got solo homers from Jordan Pacheco and Wilin Rosario in the sixth, and by Andrew Brown in the ninth, but lost 5-4.
Dexter Fowler, a late scratch for Colorado on Friday, returns to the lead-off spot for Jim Tracy’s Rockies in center-field. Padres manager Bud Black has Alexi Amarista in a 2nd-base for Logan Forsythe.
Game-time temperatures in lower downtown will be in the mid-80s under cloudy skies. It’ll be breezy, with winds out of the west-southwest at around 10 mph. 20% relative humidity will rise as the evening progresses. Drew Goodman and George Frazier have the TV broadcast for Root. Jerry Schemmel and Jack Corrigan are on radio KOA 850 am.
