If you were the Commish.

With the recent playoff changes, are there any changes to the league or the game in general that you would enact if you were the commisioner?

Personally, I would bring the number of games from 162 back down to 154. Then I would schedule each team to play 8 old fashioned double headers (the kind that are back to back and fans get in on 1 ticket) on Sundays. 4 at home, 4 on the road.

This would cut 16 days off the schedule so we aren’t suffering winter conditions during the playoffs.

What say you, fellow commissioners?

I love it and it would never, ever happen. No owner would be willing to give up 6 home games (4 from truncated schedule 2 from double headers) and cut their available seats to be sold by 7%.

I would get rid of the DH. I hate the DH.

Prog, yes the baseball season is way too long, but there is no way the MLB will reduce the number of games from the current 162. The double headers make a lot of sense as long as they are day/night affairs with separate gate receipts, so the owners/players won’t loss any revenues. If they were in this baseball thing for the fans the owners/players would adopt your suggestions in a heart beat, however it is also obvious that the fans… Read more »

Getting rid of the DH would be my choice, too, however, the AL teams won’t let one go. More on that later. I would slash the season to 156, realign creating 3 geographically aligned conferences. Every team plays each other. More games vs. specific conference teams. Interconference would be 3 vs. one, 2 vs. the other. Home one year, away the next, then switch conference schedules every third year. Everyone likes the chance to see how their guys match up… Read more »

Prog, The number of games for this season is apparently in question. I can’t remember what the number was but it would make the season 1 week shorter. Again, it is just an alleged rumor/speculation. I’m sure if you follow Rosenthal on twitter or go to his site you might get more updated info than what has been said on tv 24-36 hours ago. He is the one that broke the story. Someone behind the scenes must have really pushed… Read more »

I’m gonna have to agree with some of the earlier posters, get rid of the DH.

I would first put a salary cap and make teams spend atleast 90% of the cap it get ride of owners who are super cheap. Lets make it fair for the Colorado’s and Oaklands of the league. Second this new play in wild card game I think is terrible. Keep it at 4 teams and make the first round best 7. Either keep DH or get rid of it for both leagues it gives a unfair advantage to the WS… Read more »

Definitely a handful of good suggestions. Being realistic, the Owners won’t go for reducing from 162 games, but 8 scheduled day/night DHers would at least clear room for a 3-game wildcard round. Here my unique one. Instant Replay: Give each team 20 challenges for the entire regular season (162 games). Challenges can be used at the discretion of each manager. 20 only…even if you win the challenge, it counts against you. Challenges can’t be used for balls & strikes, but… Read more »

Sabrchip got to second Prog’s WTF.Amazing thoughts but no one in the commish’s office is smart enough to understand it! I know I didn’t.Still amazing”rocket science”appoach to the fact that the season is too long.I would also go with four traditional DHers.Memorial Day Weekend,Father’s Day,July 4th weekend, and Labor day weekend.IMO a 3game WC series should be the minimum to be fair. One game playoff type series seems unfair to a team that’s battled for 162 games.Particularly if a team didn’t clinch… Read more »

Very cool, excellent ideas. I think Prog’s are dead on + I also love Gary’s of double headers on the holidays. Maybe do traditional ones on the holidays then have 4 day-night ones. Blast the DH back to the Nixon administration. It should have resigned along w/ Tricky Dicky. Sabrchip fascinating idea but sorry, let’s just get rid of the thing. The arguments? 1) Revenue: FO there’s plenty of revenue. Save me. 2) Extended Careers: Tough. If you can’t play… Read more »

I’ve always thought that the inter-league and playoff games using the DH give an unfair advantage to the American League team. Likewise, an NL team has an advantage when not used. If the DH must be kept, then I’d like to see the DH used in NL parks and not used in AL parks in inter-league play. Since inter-league teams don’t play at both venues during the regular season, and since the World Series home-field advantage is not determined by… Read more »

Nuke the DH, obviously.
I like the 154-160 game range for the regular season. I’d keep the current playoff setup, rather than the expanded one that’s being floated. And I’d eliminate most of the travel days in the post-season. That should eliminate late October and November from the baseball schedule.

Oh yeah, Bob in WV reminded me, umpires would be required to perform post game interviews especially for playoff games or games otherwise controversial. They would be required to sit in front of a projector screen any controversial calls and point out what he saw or didn’t see.

While I do not relish the thought of change coming to the historic game of baseball, many in the past have “messed” with it incorrectly (can you say DH???), so if I had my crack at it i would go even further with the playoff’s…here is my logic: NBA: 30 teams 82 games during season 16 teams make the playoffs NHL: 30 teams 82 games during season 16 teams make the playoffs NFL 32 teams 16 games 12 teams make… Read more »

Don’t think I would tinker with the length of the season (although not sure why they added 8 games originally). I look at it in that if say the Broncos start out 0-5, they are out of the playoffs(baring some HUGE turn of events-let’s leave the TT comments out). For the same impact in baseball, you would have to start out 0-48. Baseball gives you the opportunity to right the ship over several months which if you are a fan,… Read more »

Revenue is the deal breaker but…I have heard players would be willing to take a smaller paycheck in exchange for fewer games…that’s something I remember from several years ago…heard from several players’ mouths.

If the playoffs began last week of Sept, I’d be happy.
