The Rockies could not solve Robert Stephenson as he became the first Reds pitcher to go at least seven innings. The Rockies put up a two-out run on a Mark Reynolds double and a Benny RBI single in the second. JDLR as he usually does in April could not get shutdown inning when the Cincinnati Reds scored four runs with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.
Chris Rusin came in the third inning in relief of JDLR and went four innings of shutout ball to keep the score at 4-1. That saved the bullpen and allowed Justin Miller, David Hale, and Jason Gurka to toss the last two innings without having to touch the back end of the bullpen.
Meanwhile, Colorado put the bats away for the night until the ninth when Mark Reynolds launched a two-run shot to make the score 4-3 which became a final. Reynolds demonstrated that he could be an excellent gymnast when he split his legs while keeping his foot on the bag to get the out on a wide throw from Tulo2.7. Todd Helton wasn’t nimble enough to split his legs, so that made it all that more impressive for Reynolds.
Ben Paulsen looked adequate playing left field. Hopefully WW made note of this and it makes the lineup better when both Paulsen and Reynolds are both in the lineup. Benny is an upgrade over Barnes offensively and an upgrade over Ryan Raburn defensively.
It is well known in the Rockies community that JDLR normally has a bad April. But after tonight, it is concerning if he cannot go three or four innings in three of his four starts. Meanwhile, Christian Bergman and Rusin have been consistent outside of the 29-run-over-two-games outburst by the Friars. JDLR’s velocity seems to be down so he might be at the end of his career. In addition, there were reports that JDLR bolted the clubhouse after the game in which Thomas Saunders called him unprofessional, only to see him come back to talk to Saunders. Then Saunders called himself unprofessional for assuming that JDLR bolted. Interesting. In addition, JDLR cannot allow five stolen bases in one inning with his slooooow delivery.
The Rockies will once again play (4th time) the deciding game of the three-game series when they meet up with Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday morning at 10:30 am MDT. No TV on Root_RM, but it will be shown on MLBN. The question is will the game still be blacked out even though it’s on MLBN? MLBN-alternate might be a work-around to pick up the game.
My obeservations: DJLM is not a lead-off hitter nor is Geraldo Parra. Better find somebody else to fit into the one-hole. Cristhian Adames has been a total waste at the end of the bench and suddenly I’m wishing Dan Descalso speedy recovery. Brandon Barnes needs to go somewhere else whether it’s Albuquerque or another team. His defense is nice, but his bat is hurting the bench big time. What the heck, call up Jordan Patterson and DFA Ynoa or Adames.
Jeff Hoffman left the game at ABQ after only 3.2 IP tonight. Hopefully it is a sign that he is coming up rather than a possible injury. Clue: Hoffman threw 84 pitches in 3.2 innings, giving up 3 runs, only one earned run. Looks more like preservation than health issues. Patterson had his first HR of the year tonight. If you recall me talking about Jack Wynkoop, he pitched tonight in Asheville. He went six innings giving up only five hits and a walk but allowing five runs, all but one unearned.
